DIY Mini-Dash LCD Gauges Update: MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.40

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Good news!!!
The breadboard testing is over we have moved to a much smaller development "mule" prototype board.
The "Bluetooth Sensor Server" is still reading and broadcasting fuel pressure, engine oil pressure, manual transmission oil temperature and differential oil temperature, BUT only engine oil pressure is shown on this screen.
The engine coolant temperature and engine oil temperature are broadcast on the car's network, so all we need to do is listen for it, convert it and display it.
The Air/Fuel Ratio (AFR) is not broadcast on the car's network. In order to get that data we just ask the ECU using the standard OBD Service $01 (aka live data).
In the example shown here, only the AFR for bank 1 (OBD PID 0x24) is asked for and displayed.
Down the road I will add bank 2, just to see if they are always the same or different.
The next version will have multiple screens to show more data. Items like front/rear axle torque split, real time tire pressures, automatic transmission fluid temperature, and current gear.
Well.... That's all for now. Stay tuned for the next update... It's going to be VERY good!

    Hey Zach, Thanks for your kind words! There has been much interest in how to get CAN bus data and understand it. Once these gauges are done, I will make a few episodes on how to connected, capture and understand CAN bus data. To be honest, it is much easier than you might think. You just need to learn a few key concepts and you are on your way :)

    Nice work. I think it would be helpful to also have a mark on the acceptable range. Like lets say for infiniti g37, if the acceptable range max for the EOT is 150 degrees, then we somehow indicate that.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    We think alike! I have defined all the min/max values for each sensor but didn't add them to the display. That will happen in the next version. I wanted to test the gauges before taking time to make them "pretty" I was able to determine the typical min/max from going through a few factory shop manuals and centre display from the R34/R35 GT-R. Thanks for the comment!

  • @Jus287

    This is very interesting. I was thinking about getting an oil pressure gauge fitted to my 2009 370z but the costs involved to do it neatly utilising the "A" pillar to make it look "OE" is slightly less than getting the gallery gaskets replaced anyway. Nissan UK do not sell the gaskets separately, they only come as part of a kit replacing the front of the engine. So gaskets costing £40 will cost you £800 including taxes. Crazy!

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    I agree that is crazy expensive... If things go as planned, I hope to offer a slim/factory look bluetooth engine oil pressure gauge for the 370.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Thanks Corey, I will keep that in mind but I am not ready for that just yet. I have more programming to do and the next step is to add additional pages/screens. -AND- you can select the page you want by using one of the buttons on the steering wheel. I think that way will be very convenient and unique. As for the bluetooth oil pressure sensor, it is a normal pressure sensor that is wired to a microcontroller that has a bluetooth chip. I will show/explain it better once the additional screens are added and hope for the weather to warm up a little. All this week it has been -10C / 14F in my garage, so I rather be at my desk programming :)

  • @MotorvateDIY

    Thanks for your kind words and interest. In the next few days I will post another update video with some very unique and interesting gauges like engine torque, AWD %, automatic transmission fluid temp, and about 30 other items :) It is important not to confuse a PID with CAN bus data. A PID is an OBD II item. The data is requested from the ECU and it replies. Most of the items I show on the mini-dash is broadcast on the car's CAN bus and are broadcast for other modules to use. For example on the G37, the individual wheel speed is broadcast 50 times per second. You are correct that there is very little information on the internet on Nissan/Infiniti CAN bus data. This is partly due to the HUGE investment in time to reverse engineer the raw CAN data. Over the last year, I have spent just over 2,000 hours working on this.

    Hello I need to replace the engine mounts in the g37. Do you know if the exhaust fittings need to be disassembled to replace the engine mounts? And if so is it worth cleaning up the catalytic converter while it is being disassembled(150,000km)?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    I haven't replaced my motor mounts so I don't know what is involved. I do know that it is much more difficult if you have AWD. I hope this link will help: g35driver.com/forums/faq-diy/464171-engine-mounts-diy.html

    Did you have to add a sensor to get the oil pressure reading?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, as that engine (Nissan/Infiniti 3.7 V6) doesn't have a pressure sensor... Just a simple oil pressure switch. I have added 150 psi pressure sensor in the place of the pressure switch and that is connected to our "bluetooth sensor server". The oil pressure is received by the mini-dash and displayed. The bluetooth sensor server can support up to 8 sensors, so there is lots of room for expansion if needed. The main reason we decided to use bluetooth was so that wires don't have to be run wires from the engine bay, through the firewall to the interior. The only wiring that needs to be done is ignition and ground... and those are VERY easy to find under the hood :)

    Awesome work! I've been thinking about getting physical gauges for awhile now, but I find them all to look way too tacky for a luxury sedan. This on the other hand is perfect. Also, if you end up selling this or making your own DIY, do you think it will work the same on a 2007-2008 G35?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have done a little research on this. On the 07-08 G35s there is less data on the CAN bus, so it will show a few less things. Off the top of my head, I don't remember exactly what, but I will look into it when I have more progress on the G37/370 items. After all, I need to know what works and what doesn't :)
