16 Page Mini-Dash/LCD Gauge Update! MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.42

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I am pleased to report some MORE excellent progress on the mini-dash LCD gauges!
This version shows all the data items that are meaningful for the G37/370 enthusiast.
Data items from the "Bluetooth Sensor Server" and additional sensors:
• Engine oil pressure
• Fuel pressure
• Manual transmission oil temperature
• Differential oil temperature
• up to 4 additional temperature, pressure or even ethanol sensors.
From the car's network (CAN bus)
• ECT: Engine coolant temperature
• EOT: Engine oil temperature
• EOP: Engine oil pressure
• AFR B1: Air/fuel ratio bank 1
• AFR B2: Air/fuel ratio bank 2
• Individual wheel speed
• MAF 1: Mass air flow, bank 1
• MAF 2: Mass air flow, bank 2
• IAT: Intake air temperature
• MAP: Intake manifold pressure (aka boost sensor)
• TB 1: Throttle body absolute position bank 1
• TB 2: Throttle body absolute position bank 2
• APP: Accelerator pedal position
• IGN: Cylinder #1 ignition timing
• TORQ: Engine torque
• HP: Calculated HP (from engine torque & engine RPM)
• AWD: Front wheel torque. 0% = RWD only, 100% = fully AWD and 50/50 torque split
• SIDE g: Lateral acceleration
• STRG: Steering wheel angle
• TOT: Automatic transmission fluid temp
• IN RPM: Automatic transmission input shaft RPM
• OUT RPM: Automatic transmission output shaft RPM
• GEAR: Automatic transmission current gear (1-7)
• Automatic transmission torque converter status: Locked or Sliding
• BRAKE PSI: Brake line pressure
• BARO: Outside air pressure
• OUT TEMP: Outside air temp
• CRUISE: Cruise control set speed
• RAD FAN: Rad fan duty cycle. 0% = off, 100% = full speed
• VOLTS: System voltage
• CFM: Calculated, real time engine air flow in cubic feet per minute. Uses intake air temperature and outside air pressure to calculate intake manifold air density and uses the total mass air flow to calculate actual engine air flow.
We now have automatic gage dimming... When the headlights are on, and the dash goes dim, so does the LCD backlight!
No illumination wiring needed!
In the next video, we will show the gauges in action during a nice drive in the country.

From the data I have, there isn't as much information on the car's network (CAN bus) for the early (2003 - 2006) G35. So, for the first gen G35, I won't be able to show very much :(

Thank you!! Out of the 35 data items, I have only added 4 sensors: • Oil pressure sensor • Fuel pressure sensor • Manual transmission oil temperature sensor (for automatic, we use the built in sensor) • Differential oil temperature sensor For everything else, the data is retrieved from the G37/370z network known as the CAN bus.

Thanks for checking in... Testing is going very well. But about once per month, the gauge starts/resets when the car starts. Pressing the reset button always gets it to start up normally. I have some better hardware ordered and will be porting this code to the better display.... and then more testing :)

Hey DevilG, Thanks for the comment. Every time I drive my car, I plug it in and test it. So far it has worked perfectly every time.... Connects to the Bluetooth sensor server, and starts to log data to the SD card. I also added the "GPI" (Gear position indicator) functionality (see: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mphsqJeBj7PJdsY.html) I don't need to know what gear I am in, BUT I sure like seeing it on the dash!! NOTE: For manual transmissions only. There is a local G/Z car show coming up in the next few weeks and I will be able to test it on different models of the G. For example the G35/G37 with ICC require a different way of changing pages. I will add you to the "interested" list.

Thanks for your kind words and offer. I'm still having a hard time sourcing a nice 2.0 - 2.2" IPS LCD, so the final hardware design is not final. The test mule (shown in video) uses a Lillygo T4-Display, and the LCD display has a narrow viewing angle, which I don't like. An IPS LCD has richer colours and a 170 degree viewing angle. That's why I'm on a hunt for a nice IPS display with a pixel density > 180 pixels/inch.

Hello I am wondering if this is compatible with a standalone ecu or even other car brands with can bus

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    10 ай бұрын

This mini-dash can be made to work with any vehicle. It simply reads the data on the CAN bus, converts it and displays it. The challenge to get it to work with other vehicles is having the CAN bus definitions. Typically stand alone ECUs define the CAN bus data, but stock ECUs need to be figured out... and that can take a lot of time. :(

  • @MotorvateDIY

There isn't an actual "video output", just a SPI (serial peripheral interface) that is connected between the micro controller and the LCD. The micro controller (ESP32) does all the work: receives and processes the bluetooth data, receives and processes the CAN bus data, sends the OBD mode $01 requests, saves all data to the SD card and updates the SPI connected LCD 24 about 30 times per second. Tell me more about your HUD build. What car and what data are you displaying?

Overall, it is working very good. I plug it in to my G37 almost every time I drive it. However, about 1 in every 30 times it starts up, it just keeps rebooting. Pushing the reset button once always gets it to boot up normally. I'm going to have to do some digging to understand what is going on.

  • @MotorvateDIY

Good guess!! It is all done using the Arduino IDE with C/C++ and a few RTOS tasks: receive Bluetooth data, receive CAN bus data and send CAN bus data. The main loop updates the display and writes to the SD card. The ESP32 is a fanatic micro to work with... so far what ever I ask it to do, it does it without breaking a sweat!
