Progress Update on the GTR Gauges using the G37/370z Nav Screen: MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.47

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

For the last 6 months we have been using our extensive Nissan/Infiniti CAN Bus knowledge and reverse engineering skills to figure out how to display the GTR's wonderful gauges on Nissan/Infiniti vehicles.
Good news! We have enabled the GTR gauges as well as AUX IN video!
Stay tuned for the next episode where we show the GTR gauges with live data from our G37. Yes, it is going to be awesome!

    Hey Rob, Sorry to say, but it does require navigation. The non-nav av unit, doesn't have the GTR software on it. There are a few companies that offer a wiring adapter kit, to allow the nav system on a non nav car, but the total cost is a little high.

    Thanks for the offer, I will keep it in mind. What I really like about being able to use the factory Nav screen and the GTR gauges is that no part of the dash needs to be modified. Hello again! I have a question..have you ever had issues when accelerating? It just started and only noticable really when I first start up, it delays shifting and reduces my gas milage sadly :( No slipping or shuddering to my knowledge but if I give the car more power to it goes away a bit..even after a drive it's still slightly there as I accelerate and when accelerating only..maybe the throttle position sensor..?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    Since my G37 is a manual, I don't have any experience with the 7 speed autos or know how they typically shift when cold/warm/hot. If there was an issue with the throttle position sensor, you would have a code. It is monitored all the time to ensure the input is accurate. You best bet is to post this question on myg37.com and someone should answer your question.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    There is a backdoor serial communication that gives you "console" or "command line" access on the navigation units. I've made a small circuit board to invert the logic and pull it up to the required 12v. One side plugs into the AV module and the other plugs into a USB port and then you use any serial terminal program (CoolTerm, Putty, etc) to watch the boot up or send commands. From there you can re-configure the unit, but some of commands are dangerous and without warning or "are you sure?" some commands will start to delete files or re-configure it in a way where it doesn't work anymore. In researching/testing I bricked the AV unit 3 times, but after a few days I trying everything I could, I was able to get it back. At this point I'm going to stop trying things, as I have what I was looking for: AUX in and GTR gauges.

    @@MotorvateDIY Have you found a way to change the color themes in the unit? I know some Nissans come with red or orange themes. I’m sure the themes are defaulted in the system but “ turned off “ depending on what car the system is in

    I think you are correct. An easy way around this is just to rename the folders on the nav drive. Once everything else is working, I'll look into that.

    I asked this before…somewhat… but after seeing this video, my question is a bit different. Would it be possible to Frankenstein parts from the nav unit and non nav unit to make it work?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't think so... All I know for certain is that the wiring harness/connectors, is different between non-nav and nav. If you were to add a nav screen/nav unit to a non-nav car and figure out the wiring differences... I don't know if the temp controls or radio would work . All of that isn't cheap or easy. So, I don't have anything for the non-nav cars right now. I will look into it down the road, but for now I want to focus on the "easier" GTR gauges first. For the non-nav 370 folks, I am going to be working on a nice hi-res 7" LCD display for gauges. Maybe that could be adapted to work on the non-nav 07-08 G35/G37s?

    That can be a tough code to resolve, as there can be many possible causes. An easy place to start is to use an OBD scanner and look at the short term, long fuel trims and add them together. They should be between -15 to 15%. Another easy check it to remove the spark plugs and check for oil in the spark plug hole and check the spark plugs. Next steps require special tools. PLEASE what ever you do, don't replace parts as a guess and hope it fixes the problem. Generally that is expensive and frustrating.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    If you search around, you can find instructions for this. In a nutshell, the parking brake wire the goes into the nav unit needs to be cut and grounded. The vehicle speed wire can be cut, but this makes the map position updates slow and jumpy. Some add a switch, so they can have the best of both worlds.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    I made a "USB to AV Terminal" adapter. This allows terminal / command line / console access to the navigation unit. All details (including schematic diagram) are here: www.myg37.com/forums/audio-video-and-electronics/301371-modding-the-oem-navigation-head-unit-gaining-gt-r-mfd-and-other-functions-3.html#post4317174 To bring up the gauges, enter "mfd 2" . On the 370/G37 only about 5 out of the 30 gauges will work. I'm working on making a plug and play CAN bus translator that will give the required data to make all the gauges work. I'm also going to be using my Bluetooth sensor server, to get engine oil pressure to display on the GTR gauges. Since it is Bluetooth, there is no need to bring wires from the engine bay into the interior AND it only needs 2 wires, ignition and ground. Testing will start in the spring.
