BIG update! GTR gauges for G37 & 370z: MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.50

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is the March 2023 update on the "GTR Gauges" for the G37 and 370z.
We have been able to reconfigure the stock navigation unit for the 2010+ G37/370z to enable the wonderful "GTR Gauges" screen, also known as the MFD - Multifunction Display.
Plus a live tire pressures, a Trip Computer and AUX video/audio in!
To support this screen, we have designed and built a CAN bus translator, that reads the G37/370 network/CAN bus, does the required data conversion, sends the data to the Multi-Function Display, resulting in some very nice gages, showing live data in real time!
AND we were able to use our Bluetooth Sensor Server, to provide engine oil pressure, manual transmission oil temperature and differential oil temperature using Bluetooth, so you don't need to run wires from the engine bay to the interior. How nice is that!!
PLUS, if you have tires without the expensive TPMS sensors, we can turn off that annoying bright yellow TPMS warning light, with a push of a button!

    I'm glad you found me and I'm glad you are looking for a G37. I think the G37 is the peak of Infiniti from a "fun car to drive" perspective. It doesn't have too much technology and as a result, is generally VERY reliable... plus it is so much fun to drive... Generally, I keep my cars as long as possible. I have no plans on selling the G37, much like I have no plans to sell my 22 year old BMW 530. So, you can expect to see new videos here for a long time! Thanks for the comment.

    Very interesting work, I'd like to see this being a commonplace thing/display for the boosted models of both the G37 coupes/sedans, and the 370z sports cars (that have the same display). Might be a open aftermarket mod idea, less cost AND less hassle with disassembling the pillar trim pieces, to retrofit custom gauges! Great demo video! And I hope see you progress with this software!

    As I see it, this is the easiest way to get all the gauges you want! There is no need to wire anything through the firewall (which is not easy!!) and it is plug an play! It should work with any 2010+ 370 or G37 with navigation. In the next few weeks I will be testing locally to make sure everything works as expected. I also have put together a oil pressure sensor that can use Bluetooth or CAN bus to send the data to the GTR gauges. Everyone who owns a G37 or 370 needs to keep an eye on their oil pressure due to the possibility of the oil gallery gasket failing and causing an internal oil pressure leak. Stay tuned for updates!!

    Hey Frank! I have just discovered the channel and have been blown away at the work you have done, very impressive. I noticed in this video that you are interfacing 2 can busses into a single ESP32. I'm working on a similar project for replacing the Onstar module in my volt. Is there anywhere I can find more information on your work? Thanks 😊

    Hey Kyle, Thanks for your kind words! At this time, I haven't made the time to clean up my messy notes and publicly publish anything. All of my free time is spent on development and testing. However, the dual CAN bus ESP32 (good eye, by the way!!) is just an ESP32, SN65HVD230 CAN bus transceiver (for the built in ESP32 CAN bus controller) and a modified MCP2515 module so it can run on 3.3 volts. The MCP2515 module uses SPI to communicate with the ESP32 and runs at the max clock speed of 10Mhz. The end result is a VERY affordable dual CAN bus board, with built int Bluetooth and WiFi.

    Unfortunately, I don't have any plans to attempt to develop that. I need to spend all my time rolling out the GTR gauges and a few other products. The non-nav units will require a different solution, as they don't have the "GTR gauges" firmware built in to the AV unit. However, later this year I will be starting to investigate an Infiniti G35/G37 clock gauge, that can show a few important data items, like coolant temp, engine oil temp and engine oil pressure. Also, using the same code base, I will be looking into a 7" GTR like display for the 370z.

    Awesome work man, two thing if they could be added it would be fantastic, 1- AFR Sensor as there available from obd2. 2-intake air temp. If these 2 parameters could be added I guarantee you most 370z/g37 owners would be interested in this mod, as it’s the most looked after gauges along with some of others you already got 👍🏽, looking forward for this. Good luck.

    Thanks Wesam! Since these are the built in gauges for the GTR, I can't add to them. I can only feed the data they are designed to receive. My next project will be a stand alone display for the non-nav 370, and I will be able to show what ever is requested. The non-nav G37 solution is more complex and I don't have a plan for that.... just yet.

If that is correct, a Raspberry Pi could be connected to the car's CAN bus to get the data and then use RealDash to display it on the screen. Can you verify that you can use HDMI IN on the Nifty City box?

    I just had a quick look at the CAN bus tables, and it looks like the "Automatic Drive Position" (ADP) module needs to see that the automatic transmission is in park for it to move the seat. That signal doesn't exist with a manual transmission, so I'm assuming the seat doesn't move. Can this be spoofed/tricked into working? Maybe, but I don't have time to dig into now... The engine oil pressure, manual transmission oil temp and differential oil temp use aftermarket sensors.... well sort of. The trans/diff temp sensor is actually a Sentra coolant temp sensor that you can get at the scrap yard for under $10. The oil pressure sensor can be any 150 psi pressure sensor. Those sensor are connected to a Bluetooth module we have created. This means you don't need to run wires from the engine bay to the interior, which can be tricky and time consuming.

OWC has a nice plug and play wiring harness to do just that: www.owc-upgrades.com/product-page/g35-g37-navigation-harness-adapter-kit-upgrade-2007-09-cars BUT you still need to buy the nav screen, front panel, nav buttons and nav/radio unit... So the cost does get close to doing a Tesla screen or some other CarPlay Android Audio solution.

I know the CEL light will come on, but I heard some people say that the engine will run rich when I install them and that will damage the engine. Is that true and is there anyway I can prevent that from happening ?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry, but I really don't know as I don't have any first hand experience with test pipes. From what I understand, most of the fueling feedback is done by the pre-cat air/fuel sensors. I also think the post-cat oxygen sensors are used to check for a rich/lean bias of the pre-cat air/fuel sensors, but I don"t have any hard data on that. If your engine does run a little rich, that will only damage your wallet :)

I know a lot of people like to replace chains, guides and water pump while there are in there, however, those items are know to last a VERY long time, if the car has been maintained. ^^^ Just my 2¢

  • @MotorvateDIY

    10 ай бұрын

    Excellent point... Measuring the g-force is easy. The challenge is that the CAN bus messages from the ABS/g-force module are structured differently than what the navigation unit uses. I could cut/split the CAN bus going into the navigation unit, and have a CAN gateway do the conversion. For now I want to keep this as simple as possible. I'll look into this once everything else is up and running... Seeing brake force gs is kind of nice. Thanks for bringing this topic up!

    This is HUGE, I'd put $ down on what's available already. Just a question and happy to take this offline, how would this work if one had swapped in an actual DBA GT-R head unit into the G37? Would I be able to change vehicle type in the OEM unit somehow then use this module to activate and display the gauges? I do have GTR head unit swapped directly into G37 but identifies and simply acts as a G37 unit after first start....

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    With a GTR nav unit in a G37, there is no way to bring up the MFD screen as the G37 doesn't have the "Function" button. Even if you could bring up the MFD screen only 3-4 gauges will work due to CAN bus differences. Since you have the GTR nav unit in your G37, all you need is the "MFD Converter" module to be able to bring up the MFD gauges and have all but one gauge (brake/accel g) work / display live data. Due to G37 / GTR CAN bus differences, the TPMS menu item / screen will not be displayed. BUT the Nav unit can be reconfigured to show the simple stacked list (ugly!) of tire pressures. For me, some live TPMS pressures is better than nothing.

    Correct. The 2009 navigation system is the older version and doesn't have the "GTR gauges" software built into it. For North America, it looks like the first year the 370 that has the newer nav system (known as 08IT) that has the "GTR gauges" is 2010/2011. For other market places like Japan, I don't have any information on that. If all goes well with testing locally, I will look into cars from other market places, to understand the differences, if any.
