Mini-Dash LCD Gauges Update #2: MotorvateDIY Garage Ep.41

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I am pleased to report some excellent progress on the Bluetooth and CAN bus mini-dash LCD gauges!
FIRST: We have updated the gauge design more a more clean an modern look AND have added colour bars to indicate what is cold, warm or hot... AND a red line on the oil pressure gauge if the oil pressure is too low.
SECOND: As result of reverse engineering the 370z/G37 CAN bus, we can now use the cruise control on/off button to CHANGE PAGES/SCREENS ON THE LCD DISPLAY!!! So... we now can offer multiple pages/screens of data without taking you hands off the steering wheel!
The first page shows engine coolant temperature (ECT), engine oil temperature (EOT), air/fuel ratio for bank 1 (AFR B1), and engine oil pressure (EOP)
The second page shows air/fuel ratios for bank 1 AND bank 2, engine coolant temperature (ECT) and engine oil temperature (EOT).
Third page show the wheel speed for each wheel.
Additional pages will show:
• Engine boost / intake manifold pressure
• All four tire pressures in real time. (many have asked for this!)
• Drive torque split between front and rear axle (G37X only)
• Intake air temperature
• Automatic transmission fluid temperature
• Engine Torque & Horsepower
• Lateral acceleration in g's
• Battery voltage
• and 50+ additional items... we just need to find space for them!!
AND we are still receiving fuel pressure, engine oil pressure, manual transmission oil temperature and differential oil temperature from our wireless "Bluetooth Sensor Server" that is under the hood... No need to try to figure out how to get wires/cables from the engine to the interior WITHOUT a water leak.
Being able to change pages was something we had hoped we could do. AND now that we can, BUT now we need to go back and optimize our code... We now have so much data to display, which is a GREAT problem to have :)
We hope to have the next update in a few weeks... With the ability to show multiple screens of data, we now need to use a "Real time operating system" ( RTOS). This will allow us to multi-task and get the quickest responding gauges possible. Remember, we have data coming in via bluetooth, CAN bus and OBD and we need to crunch numbers, update the display and look for button presses to display the next page.
I can't wait to show the next update to you!

Thank you! I know the video was a little dark, but I needed to set the exposure dark, so the brightness of the arcs/text wasn't over exposed.

Agreed!!! I was very happy to be able to use that... I really want the gauges to feel like apart of the car... not an add-on :)

Oh man this is gnarly. Really like the layout! Looking forward to seeing what you can do with RTOS.

Thanks... It took me about 3 days to get to the current design, not including the research to determine the cold, warm and hot temps for the various fluids. Yesterday I planned out the RTOS strategy and today I start to implement it. I hope it works as expected :)

I have a nice spot that will work with different sized displays. Once the software is done, then the 3D prototypes start :)

what an awesome project! i was thinking the same idea, but i want to use esp32 and nextion screen for the dash and taking the data from k-line (e36), do you have any idea for me?

Man this is so awesome, I really hope you can take my money one day. And so excited to hear tpms info could be displayed. Do you think there's a chance you could be able to use the trans temp pid on the screen. And thank you for the update

Thanks for your kind words! The automatic transmission fluid temp is already defined and tested... I just can't show it on my car with the 6 speed manual. For the next update, I will see if I can borrow a G37X to show tire pressures, front/rear wheel torque (G37X only) and auto transmission fluid temp. :)

Thanks for your offer, but based on the KZread analytics, there is a 90% chance you are in the US. I am in the Toronto (Canada) area. Most of the testing I need to do now I can use my G37. Then I have a few local volunteers that can help with testing on other years/models of the G37, then the 370z, then the Q50.

Good question... After the next update, I have a lot of testing to do. Testing on my car and a few other G37s a few 370s and maybe even a Q50/Q60. While that testing is going on, I will be working on the design/production of the next version of the hardware and use a IPS LCD which has brighter colours and a wider viewing angle. I hope to have everything done by the end of the spring, but some supply chain issues have already caused delays and I hope it doesn't again.

Could you sell something like this. I’m not sure where to start on building my own set up like this. I’d love to have these gauges and Tpms readings in car.

Hey Maxwell, Down the road, my plan is to offer an easy to assemble "Lego" like kit. If there is enough demand, a fully assembled kit might be offered. Keep in mind, these gauges will only work on a G37, 370z and maybe a Q50/Q60. Thanks for your comment!
