Drag Racing the G37 Sport Sedan: Motorvate's DIY Garage Ep.35

With our home made data recorder, we wanted to record a few critical items like differential oil temperature, engine oil temperature, engine oil pressure, fuel pressure and crankcase pressure at wide open throttle in the first 4 gears.... So we went DRAG RACING at Toronto Motorsport Park in Cayuga, Ontario.
We also data logged 30 other items like air/fuel ratio, air intake temp, ignition timing, and 27 other items using a high speed (100+ PIDs/second!) OBD data logger.
Our Infiniti G37 Sport Sedan has 171,000 KM (107,000 miles) and the only modifications are panel K&N air filters in the stock air box and a Stillen Cat-Back exhaust.
Engine power is directly proportional to air density. We accurately measured the air temperature, local air pressure (station pressure) and humidity then calculated the density altitude to be 2,136 feet or 651 meters.

    I don't know why, but I really like drag racing the G37... it isn't crazy fast, but it sure is a LOT of fun and if I don't have a brain fart, it does OK for a 3700 pound sedan. This wasn't a planned episode, I needed to data log some sensors at a high rate of speed, so I went to the drag strip and brought only 1 GoPro. The next day, when I looked at the video, I thought I had a story to tell... the result is this video. Thanks for your kind words!

    have you logged MAF voltages? I wonder what your peak numbers for MAF voltages are. My M37s maxes out with 4.4 V on both banks.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey MrMszuman, Yes, I did data log the MAF voltages during some of those runs :) • Run 1 (14.059 @ 100.8) bank 1: 4.27 volts, bank 2: 4.24 volts • Run 4 (14.068 @ 101.5) bank 1: 4.30v, bank 2: 4.45v I understand the M37 has a different intake, so I don't think it is an apples to apples comparison. If you use OBDFusion or OBDLink, you can see the airflow in g/s through each MAF. For some reason, when Torque shows airflow, it maxes out at 268 g/s. On run 7 (14.098 @ 100.2) max air flow of bank 1 and bank 2 was 291 g/s.

    @@MotorvateDIY thanks for the data! My M37s is slightly modified: - intake: K&N panels and ISR silicone Tubes (between filter boxes and throttles) - exhaust: Cobra High Flow Cats, full exhaust Above parts are dedicated for G37/370z, so I think they can be almost the same "apples". I thought that the limit of 268.8 for MAF was a "factory" thing from Nissan :) Good to know that the OBD Fusion can tell the truth now :) I have been checking this in Torque Pro app so far and been frustrated when the MAF limit was reached at 6600-6700 rpm. So I am going to do some runs with OBD Fusion next time. THANKS for the tip ! Regarding my M37s performance, few days ago I did some tests with 10Hz GPS (Garmin GLO): - 0-60 mph: 5.68 s - 60 ft: 2.37 s - 330 ft: 6.14 s - 1/8 mi: 9.27 s - 1/4 mi: 14.21 s

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey MrMszuman, My G37 has about the same air flow through the MAFs at around 300 g/s. From the books I have, this is how they estimate HP: 300 g/s = 390 crankshaft HP (300 x 1.3) 390 crank HP = 331 wheel HP (390 x .85) That looks to be about right when you factor in some additional power loss due to friction between the wheel and dyno.

The play zone remains the same, its just pressure after the play zone is a noticeable amount less. Although if I normally drive it, the pressure seems to come back. I guess it could be called variating clutch pedal pressure. Any thoughts on what could be the fix/cause? I've read from the experts that removing the cats should be one of the last things you do cause if you do them first without doing anything else you won't really gain any power. Plus technically it's against the law plus you gotta deal with the smell. That's the main reason I would never take mine off. I hate the smell of exhaust.

    Hey Anup Patil, Hmmm I didn't see any posts about the battery not charging... Anyways, the charging system on the G37 is variable and controlled by the engine control unit. (ECU) I have read that some aftermarket alternators don't work as well as the Nissan or Infiniti ones. Try this: Unplug the battery current sensor that is on the negative battery cable right next to the battery. This will disable the variable charging control, and the charging voltage should stay the same at around 13-14 volts.
