1 Year Later… $20 Differential Bushing Fix: Motorvate's DIY Garage Ep.33

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On this episode of Motorvate’s DIY Garage, we find out how well the $20 / 20 minute differential bushing fix is doing after 1 year.
Way back in episode 23, ( • $20 Differential Bushi... ) we used 5 minute epoxy to fix a ruptured rear differential bushing.
Now, Many of you have asked how well is it holing up after one year of use and here it is :)

    Hey Son K, Simply put, the differential provides power from the engine to the drive wheels. On a rear wheel drive car, the power from the engine needs to make a 90 degree turn, and that is the job of the differential. Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

    Hey Drew Phillips, Filling the diff bushing should help reduce wheel hop. However, in looking close at the subframe during the acceleration runs, you can see how much the rear subframe shakes/moves. I think the Z1 subframe bushing inserts would do much more to eliminate wheel hop.

There is one problem though, I do see the silicone fluid dripped down to the differential but I do not see any rupture on the bushing so I think the rupture is on the other side. (See if I can verify it with an endoscope) If that's the case, should I make my own openings on the accessible side and fill it with resin?

The rear under body plastic shield was removed and the the other end was bolted to one of the existing mounting tabs. Since it is dark under the car, I needed to do a lot of adjusting of the RGB curves to make the video brighter. When I do this next time, I will mount a few bright LEDs to the GoPro and that should give much better quality. Good luck!

    @@MotorvateDIY Any tips of getting the epoxy to be more thick in consistency? I have gone ahead and done this with JB clear weld epoxy 5min. My main issue was it is still 90 degrees here, so its viscosity was very low and ran out onto the floor haha. Bought more and did it at night and taped off the front with 3m mounting tape. So far so good; although some did fall back out only maybe 1/8th of the tube total. May have to jack it up to allow the taped side to tilt back a lot more and fill any gaps left. Thanks! :)

    Hi...thanks for the update. My 2014 Outback has two similar rear diff bushings that are leaking and I would like to try your method since OEM replacement is over $1,500. Based on your experience, do you think the epoxy is flexible enough so there will be no adverse impact overtime to the diff, drivetrain or transmission?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    6 ай бұрын

    I am not familiar with the Outback's diff bushing design. The bushing in the G37/370 has two oil filled chambers at the top and bottom of the bushing. On the left and right side, it is solid rubber. Filling the top/bottom chambers with epoxy simply tries to get the stiffness closer to stock, or at least stiffer than a blown bushing. Will this work on your car with no negative issues? I don't know, but since a few companies make stiffer bushings for your car (like Whiteline) I would think a stiffer bushing won't hurt anything.

    My (boring) 2000 outback has the same problem. The local subi guy wants 800 to change two bushings out. Yikes. I can get genuine Subaru subframe with bushings and the 4 body mounts for less than 300! In the meantime I have to try this.. It's just to clever. This car is 20 years old. But it drives nice as these are low compared to the new outback and it's cheap to register. Do you think the new subframe with the New rubber body mounts will make a difference in the ride and or the road noise?? Appreciate the video😁

    Hey Danny Lee, I am not familiar with the design of the Subaru bushing, but I think the design is very much the same as the G37 diff bushing. With that in mind, I think you don't have anything to loose if you try it. IF the epoxy fix isn't good, then you might be out $10... BUT if it works well (and I think it will), you have a cheap fix. Hey mohsen Alsuraimi, As you can guess it is difficult to troubleshoot a problem this way... Is there any chance you could post a video of the noise? That would be very helpful. One easy test you can try is to push down 2-3 times on the front fender or bumper to bounce the front of the car. Then do the same for the rear. This should help to determine if the nose is the front or rear suspension. -or- if nothing is heard, then it might be drive line related. One more thing... what year, make and model is your car?

    Hey mohsen Alsuraimi, I just watched the video and my best guess is something in the drive line is worn, since it only happens when you first tip into the throttle. If you think the sound is from the front left, I would start there...Jack up the front of the car, remove the wheel and have a look. If you see a lot of grease inside the wheel, check your outer CV boot for rips or deep cracks. While the wheel is off, you might as well have a look at the upper and lower ball joints and the outer tie rod for play. check for ripped or torn rubber boots. Let me know what you find... @@MotorvateDIY mine also is manual transmission, im thinking the blown out bushing is causing the differential to cause the issue. it happens on harder accelerations. Im new to all this and less mechanically knowlegeable. so im learning as i go. car has 134k miles on it, and this is the first time ive really had any issues other than an alternator

    Hey Justan AverageGuy, Ok, I understand now. A blown diff bushing will not cause the anything to slip. What exactly is slipping? Is the rear of the car sliding out a little when in turns?

    Hey S15SpecRR, If I was to do it again, I would try to use all three. Once it squirts out the top, you know it is full. Also, get a jack under the diff and lift it a little like maybe 1/16" to 1/8". Good luck!

I did replace the starter and the battery , and still doing the same I have to push it to get it to run. please help !!!!

    Hey Rafael Gonzalez, When you say it doesn't start, I am assuming you mean the engine doesn't turn over. Do you hear a click when you turn the key? First I would double check for any loose connections /wires on the battery and starter. To troubleshoot this further, you should use a cheap digital multi-meter to measure the voltage at the battery, starter solenoid and starter when someone turns the key. If you don't have a meter (or don't want to get one) you best bet is to take it to a shop.

  • @MotorvateDIY

    Hey Rafael Gonzalez, There is a switch on your clutch pedal (clutch interlock) check to see if it is loose or out of adjustment. With the car in neutral and the parking brake on, unplug the switch. Use a wire or paper clip to connect both female connector on the wiring harness. (This simulates that the clutch pedal is fully pushed down) Try to start the car. If the above doesn't work, then... Measure the voltage at the battery (between positive and negative) and let me know what it is. (yes, I know it is a new battery) Measure the voltage at the large wire on the starter and a good ground, and let me know what it is. Check for voltage at the starter solenoid (the smaller wire on the starter) while someone tries to crank the car and let me know what it is. There is a switch on your clutch pedal (clutch interlock) check to see if it is loose or out of adjustment. The good news is that the starting circuit on the older cars are not complicated, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out the issue. :)

    How is it holding up?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well..... over the last 3 years, the epoxy has compressed slightly and there is play back in the bushing. I do suspect drag racing may of sped up the process. If I was to do it again, I would use a black polyurethane that is used to seal windshields. It is more expensive and takes a full day to cure, but I think that would of been a better fit.

    Thanks again for these videos! Is the amount of play after 3 years similar to what you showed before the repair? Also, any signs of further degradation of the rubber, or is it still about the same as before?

  • @MotorvateDIY

    @MotorvateDIY

    Last year I mounted a camera under the car to see how well the bushing is holding up... and it is about the same. The 5 minute epoxy I used might of compressed a little over the last 4 years, but it is still better than when the bushing had blown. The rubber bushing hasn't torn/cracked more which is good. :)

    Since my G37 has "performance all season" tires, it doesn't have a lot of grip and as a result, I don't have a big wheel hop problem. Comparing before and after this fix, there was no noticeable difference in wheel hop... at worst, I just had a little. (like when on wet road)
