Disney Respond To Critical Drinker & “Toxic” Fandom

Ойын-сауық

Disney have been getting attacked heavily by the fans online over the last couple of yours for their terrible movies especially in the MCU and Disney Star Wars, with online critics like The Critical Drinker leading the charge calling out Disney's terrible movies. But in a crazy turn of events Disney have seemingly responded to this negative criticism and finally admitted that they have been failing, and Disney have also announced that they have now cancelled multiple movies including MCU projects. However I doubt they would be making these changes if it wasn't for the growing pressure due to millions of people online critiquing their films, with The Critical Drinker leading the charge.

Marketing. It would make all the difference if an actual creative writer were put in charge. But no, marketing is king. The potential for selling merchandise is what projects are based on; the hitpotential of a song (LET IT GO is what FROZEN was constructed around). Derived stuff (anything you can glue a Starwars logo on. The green milk - available in Disney parks - was a surprising failure). Just imagine if Disney put the same amount of effort into the plot of a movie that they put into that coloured flavoured milk ... but nooo, "somehow Palpatine returns" is what they came up with. Three words.

I don't watch him often but the last video I saw he showed a graph of demographics and who watches what genre and he said what you're saying. Studios come into a genre that's mostly male skewing and then make movies designed for women. Funny enough they never do the inverse. There's not many rom-coms or musicals geared towards men, for a good reason. Like when they made that gay rom com that flopped. Men don't want to watch it because it's rom com and women don't want to watch it because they can't relate to any of characters when both love interests are male.

“A snake can shed its own skin. But it’s still a snake” Iger proves it every time; being the manipulative person his is. Also, the biggest problem with “introducing characters” is that their bad writing causes them to take ages to get people to get to know them. Which, in turn, creates the myth of “needing more time to introduce a character”. Plenty of films in the 2000s only took 5 minutes for the audience to know in the beginning and witness their character arc in the rest of the film. 2 hours and on in a second film to understand them is just terrible writing when no one knows more about who they are in the first few minutes.

I've heard a story from a pilot, that during his first flight he went for a rougher landing that he should, and when his older and more expirienced co-pilot told him that pasadgers wouldn't like that he replied "it's not a big deal, they can endure it". Later on, when plane safely landed and pasadgers were on their way to the airport, elder pilot came to the younger one, hit him in a face with enough force to put young guy on the ground and said: "remember this, asshole. They're the one who put bread on your table, light in your home, and clothes on your back. They will not endure. Instead, you will tie yourself in a knot, but make them happy". The explanation is that the industry is run by people who are either staunch activists (or pandering to activists, same thing), or narcissists. The former beleive that they are changing the world for the better so anyone who opposes them must be evil. The latter believe that they have their finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, and anyone who disagrees is just stupid. "We know what you want." The problem is that making money and pleasing their audience is not a priority for either of those groups. They have "a higher purpose," which is a real problem in multi-billion dollar entertainment industry.

the rational explanation is that the industry doesn't run on your money. It runs on financing provided by the banks. This is the result of low interest rates: banks throw money at everything, whether it's successful or not, because they need that volume to compensate for the tiny % of interest their making on the other side. Your loan is their collateral for the debt they actually want (government) so, again, they throw money at you whether your product is profitable or not.

It sounds like Disney MCU suffers from the same problem Disney Star Wars did: They just throw poo at a wall and sees what sticks. They have no coherent idea of where their stories are going. And they can't be bothered to avoid plot holes and story archs that go nowhere because they feel their audience isn't worth the effort (and they probably lack the writing skills even if they did care).

As he was explaining certain plot points, I had to interject about a thing or two, to which he confirmed. "Actually... I think I've seen that..." It's very likely the bigoted and blind leaders at Disney can't fix this problem. When their goal is to punish anyone male, and anyone white, they don't have a good foundation to build engaging and edifying films. They want to "empower," women and minorities while telling them they are eternal victims. They claim brown people are poor and oppressed when brown people in the USA are among the poorest AND wealthiest. They claim white people with a high school diploma, but no college degree are "uneducated." Then they praise minorities with no college degree. It's divisive and another brand of supremacy that is just as bad as every other kind.

All these issues stem from one original sin: DEI. This has caused them to hire people based on their physical and genital characteristics and not talent or competency. So obviously you’re not going to got get any big, visionary stuff from directors, writers producers, etc who’ve never even been involved in a big budget movie before. They’re too busy figuring out what the heck to do for the movie at hand to even contemplate where it’s going down the road.

Another big issue is that none of the new characters are resonating with audiences, and that is evident from watching dozens of videos about how Marvel and Star Wars merchandise is clogging discount stores. Every video it’s tons of Shang-chi, The Eternals, and Black Panther (nothing from Antman 3 or the Marvels because they were never ordered in the first place), which have been rotting for years. Hasbro is in huge financial trouble because lots of these toy lines aren’t selling, and it’s little wonder why. People don’t want the figures, because they aren’t featuring characters we care about

Lucasfilm should start a division like DC Elseworlds titled Legends where they hire fans to make non canon stories and give full creative freedom and not interfere, and let them make faithful adaptations of Expanded Universe material. Disney can still make their crap, but give the option for customers to buy and watch other Star Wars content not part of their continuity. I think the same should apply with Marvel by allowing a division to hire fans to make Marvel movies and shows not part of the MCU and tell good stories with any Marvel related characters and properties without interference from Kevin and Disney.

I remember seeing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when I was a kid and there was an intermission. I forget how long it lasted but the restroom had a long line of both kids and adults. And in those days, kids as young as 5 would regularly go to the restrooms by themselves. Kids and many older adults, have difficulty sitting through a 2.5 hour movie. They should bring back the intermission for movies over 2 hours long. A lot of families wait for a movie to come out on Netflix or Amazon prime or other services to watch a movie at home because not everybody can sit through a movie over 2 hours long. Of coarse an intermission will cut into screenings but it will more than make up for it in increased concession sales and maybe more families and older adults will be willing to sit through a long movie. Its not attention span that limits how long many people can sit through a movie, its nature.
