Devin Townsend at Fishman NAMM 2016

Комедия

I got to meet Devin shortly after this happened and I was very starstruck and excited to shake the guys hand. It was a fantastic treat at NAMM to meet one of my musical heroes.
If Fishman or anyone involved wants this video down I will do it, I do not claim any kind of ownership over this video and have left it un-monetized.

I love how he’s not afraid to show that he has weaknesses, and doesn’t hide who he is. It makes you respect him so much more. He’s such an awesome guy. If I could hang out with any artist for a day, it would be Devin townsend without a doubt. And Holy Fuck those high screams were insane!

Devin looks so uncomfortable in this performance. I can imagine it's really anxiety-inducing for him, hence all the jokes and commentary. I think he does that as a coping mechanism. Check out the "Devin Townsend Unleashed" video that D'Addario did, he basically says the bit about sweep picking verbatim. I think NAMM overwhelms the dude, but he goes to events like that cause dudes like Framus help him do his music thing. Love you Devin

+Paul K When I met him (that's his personal Framus Mayfield custom in my profile pic), he was totally overwhelmed by everything. I asked him how he was doing, and his answer was "man, I don't fucking know right now... just... fuck..." He later talked about all the goofy shit he does, and it's 100% coping mechanisms. He's the kind of guy who loves hanging at home with his family, but at the same time he loves performing. It's just hard for him to do, and he said he's always been a socially awkward person, so out comes the goofy stuff because it's a mask that he can hide behind. After the clinic, he hung around to talk to people who didn't have the VIP passes, and some guy got totally starstruck and couldn't say a word. Dev sat him down on a chair, gave him a hug and had a really quiet chat to him. I couldn't hear what he said, but I honestly think that Devin totally understood what the poor dude was going through. He signed one of my guitars and drew a picture of Ziltoid on it, and I got to play his guitar. It was a night I will never forget :D

Really surprised that he actually played a little bit of "Love"! I hope that doesn't refuel that part of the fanbase that constantly nags him about playing the SYL material live. I feel kinda ambivalent about this performance here. Dev is all kinds of awesome, but as previously stated he seems kinda uncomfortable and on edge here :/ Must be hard to be kinda "pressured" into these kinda things when it pulls him out of his comfort zone. He also sounded a bit overwhelmed on twitter earlier. I hope he remembers to take care of himself

+shadowuser00 you're thinking of the wrong concert, buddy :) It was "The Retinal Circus" concert from 2012 where he played some SYL, and that entire concert was supposed to represent his entire career, which is why he played 2 SYL songs that night :) The concert from 2015 was "Ziltoid Live At The Royal Albert Hall", which is a fucking awesome concert btw! :P

+12801024 Oh yes you're right. My mistake. I knew it was one of the big live shows. I knew Retinal Circus was supposed to span his career but was very surprised to hear SYL material when he's stated time and time again he won't play it and they won't get back together

  • @RasmusYde

I think he felt that he needed to include SYL in order to make the show work? It was a big part of his life at one point after all, and to just ignore such a huge thing would have been wrong? I would love to hear him tell about his thoughts on this specific topic, but I guess he don't feel like talking about anything related to SYL?

He just happens to cope with it all really well. Music comes naturally from him, but it seems that even if his jokes seem natural and relaxed, they are a result of him trying to cope with how stressed he is with the chaotic energy of NAMM, which seems to be too much for him.

Devon is amusing but showed that without accompaniment his riffs are monotonous and basic. Without the comedic interludes and singing this would sound like a kid learning to play in his basement.
