Rig Rundown - Devin Townsend

The original Strapping Young Lad shares some insights on his all-digital setup.
Before his last show of 2017, Devin Townsend met with Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger backstage at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works to go through his live setup. For a guy known for layering textures of tones and effects, Townsend’s signal path is surprisingly streamlined.
Devin Townsend tours with two prototypes of his signature Framus Stormbender. These Stormbenders feature an ebony fretboard, mahogany body, maple neck, 25.5” scale, and are tricked out with internal LEDs, Townsend’s signature Fishman Transcendence pickups, and an Evertune bridge.

Eddy Guizonde it's refreshing to see a guy having a pile of fun rather than being serious. It's a good reason why he sticks out among everyone else. No rockstar facade. It's just him.

I don't think I have ever seen an interview or performer in a situation like this where their ego just doesn't shine through to some extent or another. It's refreshing to just see a real person with a passion for his craft who knows he's part of a machine that produces something beautiful that people love and admire him for. For someone with so much raw writing and singing talent, Devin is a unicorn, an enigma, and just one of two left from my original 4 on my bucket list to see if it kills me. Love that little slide at the end after his words of wisdom. Brings a tear and a smile. He just can't help being cool.

It's because we're used to seeing caricatures like David Lee Roth, who is great in his own way with early VH, but when you watch him, you're left wondering how many personality issues he has because he seems like this weird facade that you can't see under to the 'actual' person inside. Many musicians with fame and ego are like this. Andy Timmons is another guy who is as lovable as Devin Townsend. Just a guy who loves what he does without an ego.
