Raiko has a surprisingly modern appearance: a skirt, tie, and jacket covering a collared shirt are a fashion that suggests a very active, independent lifestyle; one that is expected of a Youkai wielding octagonal drums. It is a stark contrast from the dresses and nightgowns worn by most characters in the series. Joyous, and yet energetically rebellious. I like it. I like it a lot.

This might just be the best song in any of the Touhou Project games, not just from an artistic standpoint, but also from the standpoint of how it ties into the character it represents. Raiko is literally a deity of thunder and drums, hence why this song places so much emphasis on the percussion sections. Not only is the drum solo awesome, the build-up to it is also phenomenal. In short, ZUN is a musical and artistic genius, and this song is arguably his finest work overall.

+Philip Cheung Seeing as the "ou" syllable in Japanese is pronounced "ō" (as in yōkai/youkai), the name of the Pokémon Raikou, which many people pronounce "Rye-koo", would technically be pronounced the same or similar as "Raiko". And that's really cool.

​@@trainlyappurus To be honest, I think a lot of the piece leading up to it must have been difficult for ZUN too since the drums still get heavy leading up to that. I think covers that make the drums quieter tend to not be my favourite. Luckily RichaadEB knew just who to guest on that cover, *beat* is in the song title whether it's "Pristine" or "Primordial". (I prefer "primordial" since words like that and "primitive" direct translations are stand-in's in Japanese to equate "funky [music]", or so I've *heard* please don't quote me, but the drums get super funky for Touhou standards)​ I haven't *played* Touhou because I have no idea how to get this Japanese indie game series that I'm not even sure has official translations, I know ZUN tends to leave the brand almost public domain as an IP (games as media I'm pretty sure are copyrighted). But even browsing on Steam for the official ZUN games is a pain. But I hope this track being my favourite of any I have heard is a more cultured choice or something. 😅

It's a shame that Raiko isn't as popular as some of the others. She has the most creative fight by far out of all of the Extra bosses, and the conversation she has with Marisa is pretty funny. Oh, well...some people don't know quality when they see it, I guess.

Raiko is a character that doesnt have a lot of information in except by the fact of she being a youkai and being leader of the Primsriver band .This battle it is creative but wouldnt say the more creative one , touhou has many creative fighr taht consist of the character abilities like Sakuya knifves or Mamizou transform bullets . many character have funny dialogue and taht wouldnt matter , you are talking aboyt a game with a lot of character so saying one is the best is a lie.

She is actually the only Extra Boss i have actually *beat* and i think she is the easiest. It's not that hard to reach her with 4~6 lives and, with Sakuya A's bombs, defeat her. But she is probably the only Touhou Extra Boss i'll defeat in my entire life. :3

+Py'Werne I haven't played DDC yet but I'm really looking onto it but I think you might be able to beat Ran Yakumo and Suwako Moriya too but also Yukari Yakumo, Fujiwara no Mokou or Nue Houjuu as well. However Flandre, Koishi, Mamizou and Hecatia are frikin' hell afaik.

Raiko always looks so cool in fan art.

Damn this theme is brilliant. One of my favorite touhou themes ever and I generally don't like drums. Zun y u so gud.

It's kinda sad how little canon presence Raiko has. Not counting Momoyo (who is still a very recent character), she is the most underutilized windows extra boss in the series. And that's despite the fact that DDC is now as old as EoSD was when DDC came out

You could argue that Hecatia is more underutilized than her, thanks to Raiko the tsukumogami youkai were able to stay as a youkai because she was the only one smart enough to realize how they work. And she appears with the prismrivers in fighting games.

Extra stage bosses are kinda like that, one ends up being a series staple, the other just kinda gets binned. Flandre was irrelevant until 17.5 came along and ZUN suddenly remembered that she exists. Ran is more or less the same before UDoALG. Suwako is... eh, she didn't have it as bad but beyond her appearance in Soku she didn't really get much of a role, even if ZUN didn't forget about her like the previous characters. Nue has only made 3 appearances beyond UFO in-game media, and even then it was mostly in the photo games where everyone appears. Hecatia was forgotten beyond the three fairies manga. And so far Saki's only had a minor role while Momoyo is yet to be seen anywhere. Mokou, Koishi, Mamizou and to an extent Okina are the only EX stage bosses that gained some relevance throughout the series, so what I'm trying to say is, give it some time, maybe in 10 years ZUN will remember that Raiko exists.

@@toro2812 personally, I would rank the canon presence of Windows Extra bosses like this: 1. Yukari (yes, I know that she is technically a Phantasm boss) - nothing to comment here, she is one of THE most omnipresent characters in Touhou canon. 2. Mamizou - she is also basically everywhere. Not quite the Yukari level of canon omnipresence, but still way above absolute most of the other characters. 3. Koishi - while she doesn't appear in almost any print works, her presence in fighting games more that compensates for it. 4. Mokou - less game appearances than Koishi, but considerably higher print work presence. 5. Flandre - yes, she was abscent for a very long time, but her recent reappearences in 17.5 and FDS are huge. 6. Okina (though, for me she is more of a Final boss than an Extra boss) - suffers for not yet being playable, but otherwise, yeah, appears quite frequently. 7. Ran - was revitalized a lot by UDoALG, but, to be fair, she had some small appearences here and there before that (like in SSiB and FDS + some Yukari's spell-cards). 8. Saki - would't call her role in UDoALG "minor": she certainly was much more important there than, let's say, Nazrin or Seiran. But still, one game is just one game, and also her print work presence is none. 9. Suwako - technically, a playable character, but doesn't even have her own story mode. Print work appearances are miniscule. 10. Nue - at least she appears in TD Extra stage, and that one FS chapter. Additionally, being an older character, she've got lucky to also appear in DS and have a SoPM article about her. 11. Hecatia - a few VFiS chapters, one AFiEU interview, and that it. The only non-LoLK game she appears in also has Nue in it, so she is below her. 12. Raiko - as I've already said, she is incredibly underutilized. Her only print work appearance is a small AFiEU interview. 13. Momoyo - well, at least, she has an excuse of still being a very recent character. Also, she shows up in 100BM, which is neat, I guess

@@MrNoobomnenie Heck, when you think about it, the entire cast of DDC got shafted harder than any other windows mainline entry in the series, half got relegated to minor appearances in ISC or VD, Seija is basically the main character for ISC, then she proceeds to never, ever appear again in the enitre series, and to top it all off, Koakuma has more manga appearances than anyone in the game and fucking Mima has appeared in more games than anyone bar Shinmyoumaru. ZUN must have something against this game cause even LoLK's cast didn't receive such a treatment.

When the drums start, OMG. Man, if Kanako wasn't my fav 2hu, Raiko would've taken her spot. Her design, the drums... All top-tier!

Let's take potshots at who she's borrowing her power from. My guess is The8BitDrummer.

ZUN became extremely good with percussion in his latest works. I see this as the theme that started to show his improvements. Just listen to the OST he made in ULiL (the ones he didn't make had often great percussion as well) and LoLK

Reimu A and Reimu B: hm, this is a really big challenge Sakuya A: OP shot × defensive bomb for the lalz Marisa B: hilarious nonspell executions, spell timeouts Marisa A and Sakuya B: can't even beat normal mode with 'em... (but I've beaten hard mode with Sakuya A)

If Raiko's first spell wasn't such a homing-killer and I could actually get enough lives and bombs, I could beat Raiko with Sakuya A. As it is, I'm trying to 1cc Normal with Marisa B so I can use her instead (so many lives + no homing = much better chance as long as I don't die to Alternate Sticking)

this theme has some unique sounds unheard in most touhou themes

Everybody said she looks like Yuuka.. While i'm here thinking that Raiko is actually Yumemi,who learned how to play Taiko Drums.

Every time there’s a thunderstorm outside, I am reminded of this theme- and before long I am blasting it into my ears.

This theme has over a million views? AS IT SHOULD!

I like Raiko more than Hecatia. Besides both of their 0:00 sound similar. 0:30 is also similar with Hecatia's theme intro.

Before I know it, I already hear the 10 minutes of the song. This never happened to me with any Touhou song. This really is a masterpiece.

Recently, I got some new headphones, and when I played this song, I could hear the Taiko Drums in the background. It sounds so awesome :D
