I like how this artist nails the subtlety of Junko's expression. Her smile isn't performatively "creepy" in a yandere or cringe way. She simply wears the resting expression of someone who has purified herself beyond the need to emote the hatred she embodies.

Oceano1203 It was actually that Junko flooded the moon with "impure" fairies to force the Lunarians to flee, so she could shoot down Chang'e as she fled, completing her plan of revenge. It's right in Junko's official profile.

Junko is freaking terrifying. A being of purified hatred always wearing a creepy smile. Even her bullets have no interest in making pretty patterns, they are designed purely to kill you. We wanted ZUN to create a legitimately evil villain, and boy did he deliver.

I mean to be honest the whole plot of LoLK can be summed up into: Junko got mad over a casualty that was accidental. Houyi was given the task to deal with the jade emperor's sons; did so and as a result got himself and Chang'e kicked out. Then when Houyi's apprentice tried to steal the Elixir of immortality, Chang'e took it to keep it from falling into someone elses hands. This makes Houyi a warlord and takes the person who is the real life equivalent to Chang'e and Houyi's real wife. Junko goes too far after killing her husband by not only cooking him up but forcing his sons to eat the meal then killing them as well.

Th, I think she is pathetic. Hatred is not pure to begin with, it's a solution of the pure soul caused by the identification with death mater,aka false ego. "My son died, I will take revenge because I can control what is more powerful then me." Little did junkie know, but the taught made junkie most impure. The real purity of the soul is his. what makes this scarier is the fact that junko looks like she's visibly trying to hold in her anger.

You're right, I personally haven't ever seen anyone experiencing something like this, but it's pretty obvious it's one of the worst things to experience. Every time I learn more about Lunarians or Junko's gang, the more I believe Junko should have won and destroyed Lunarians.

Given who she’s based on, she not only lost her son, she lost her husband, and possibly her *home*. In one story, Houyi was said to have killed a king and his son, then forcibly wed the queen. That queen is Junko.

It's not just that she lost her son that gets me. It was that it was her husband (at least, at the time) who killed her son. And why did he do something so awful? To marry Chang'e. Not gonna lie, I'd probably do the same thing as Junko in that situation.

@@NeoNickz in my OPINION eosd is more harder i just say... 1-you NOT have hitbox and that does more harder for know where wanna hurt you. 2-LoLK have the "Pointdevice Mode" what does the game so EASY, you can probably die more for no have life true, but can continue with the "chapter" with INFINITE lifes. (and thanks to Pointdevice Mode you can have the extra stage more easily in comparison to touhou 6) 3-LoLK is just hard when you NOT select pointdevice mode but if not then is SOOOOOOOOO easy. 4-the most harder of the game is the "Extra Stage" but if not all is easy. 5-in that touhou you can exit of the departure without problem just why you can continue where you left it. BUT in touhou 6 if you exit of the departure you wanna have to try it other again since the begin. 6-now for finish it....EXTRA STAGE. the extra stage of touhou 6...IS A HELL giving you just TWO lifes and and patterns very hard what you have to be concentrated for evade it, in LoLK you have more lifes what touhou 6 extra stage does it more "easy" and well that is MY OPINION i respect your opinions too so if for you is more hard LoLK then no problem~

I was actually a bit surprised to find that Junko is the first person in Touhou history to ever get married and had a son.

I think what they mean is that in the battle itself Junko is actually trying to kill you and ignoring the rules all other enemies have followed (which keep the balance of power closer so none of the overpowered characters can snuff the world on a whim). And technically before ZUN came up with the idea that danmaku had "rules" to prevent outright murder there was no such rules in effect which is why some people like the headcanon that the Reimu from the older games was actually going around killing yokai (which would explain why there was a lot of one-time bosses).

This is actually a very clever theme imo. There is no beauty, no finesse in pure, unadulterated rage. This is reflected in her danmaku. She's not interested in a spellcard rule battle, she's going to destroy everything that gets in the way of her revenge. No elegance in that. It fits, and that's why it works.

I disagree about one point you brought up: That there is no beauty/elegance in this theme. I think this theme is quite elegant in its representation of her inner rage. Then again, I suppose I'm the sort of person that finds the beauty in the most chaotic and dissonant places when it comes to music.

Impurities. If she truly remembered the love she felt for her son, that kind of empathy for another human being who loved her in turn, she would’ve given up on her grudge by now. But her grudge is all she is. There’s no doubt about it: she’s absolutely miserable, with no way to recognise it. She’s not just in pain. She’s in her own, personal Hell.

Yes, the simple, in-your-face nature of her spellcards is part of her theme of purity... but it's also because she's paying absolutely no attention to the spellcard rules. She's not playing a game. it's a good thing that touhou character resolve their problems with (almost) harmless games of dodging bullet patterns, since some of them are insanely powerful even for anime standards, but while everyone else is trying to have a good time creating beautiful patterns Junko is just that one hardcore player that doesn't understand anymore that games are supposedly made for having fun and just goes for the win with the most efficent strategy and attacks, dense bullets, micrododging, tricky patterns, insane rng...

You know what's really interesting? How Junko gives up so easily when she finds out what Sagume already set in motion. Sagume opened her big mouth and set Junko up for failure by saying Reimu(or whatever heroine you picked) would defeat her. She literally says, "I've lost my will to fight.", and just "toys" with you. Then she shows up in the Extra Stage with Hecatia and says she wants to kill you. Even if you focus on her during the last spell, she comes out of it without a scratch, while Hecatia looks like she just came out of Vietnam. We've already deemed her the smartest character too since she actually TRIES to kill the heroine instead of just shooting off danmaku. But it makes you think, someone who was able to bring the Lunar Capital to the brink of destruction to the point where they were going to retreat into Gensokyo was defeated because a somewhat God says that she would fail at the hands of the heroine. Makes you think just how strong Sagume is and what if Junko was serious

Wait i tought that Sagume power caused the opposite of what she said happened, thus causing her to be the biggest liar in the entire universe. So in this case if Sagume said that Reimu( insert other playable character) would defeat her, then by her powers the opposite would happen. Edit: Aparently her power doesn't cause exactly the opposite to happen. It simply causes the situation that Sagume talks about to resolve in a diferent way.

Well Sagume actually said that the plan of the people from the lunar capital going to gensokyo will work out in the end. So Sagume with her powers made fate change once again, so the plan would actually fail, but it would fail, because the protagonist would defeat Junko and her plans of killing Chang'e and the people from the capital moving into gensokyo wouldn't be anymore necessary. Anyway, Sagume and Junko are still great characters.

As someone who studied about game design for 2 years, and as an artist for fun, when I played Touhou LolK, I just fell in love with Junko's design. At this point, we hadn't seen much orange in touhou characters, and as much as some characters like Marisa who's design is mostly black, is just an ordinary witch, and with characters like Cirno, who tries to look menacing, she just...can't, wich is the joke. With Junko we have something simple yet interesting, by mixing her characteristic orange in with black and gold, it just gives that elegant, yet powerful look, and I'm sure if it wasn't because Zun is mostly drunk when developing his games, I can bet he probably would've added a bit of orange lines to her sleeves, rather than just making them black, wich could be a way to expressing someone's hate/menace is raising, wich is exactly how it feels her battle and spell cards. She's just so menacing, last time I feel this threatened was when face Sakuya in EoSD, with her just going:"Cleaning never ends. The mistress will be mad at me" like she doesn't acknowledges you, you're just trash to her, and hell Sakuya gets hard if you aren't used to bullet hell. And then Junko's image is just:"I'll kill you" with a rather dead smile. Her design is just top tier

Basically, orange represents power and will, and some stripes(lines, I think that's how it's spelled) and making Junko's sleeves not entirely black would've work as of how her theme is literally called "Pure Furies". Red wouldn't work since she's supposed to has this poker face. However I get Zun's decision, since his art style is not the most defined one I've seen(changes every 2-3 games)

This song is technically #1. U.N. Owen and Septette have nostalgia proof, just like FF7 or Charizard. People will never judge them objectively and they are undethronable. I'm really glad this theme climbed this far, it really deserves it. LoLK didn't deserve its hate in general.

EpreTroll Not really. Pure Furies' main melody is MUCH slower paced to a high-paced theme. It helps to give the theme simplicity whilst being intense. Border of Life, on the other hand, isn't meant to be as simple, thus why it was given a slightly (keyword) faster melody. At least, that's how I see it.

Hello~ It's been almost ten years since this game/track came out and I wanna gush about why this theme is so fucking good, actually This theme (as do a LOT in this game, actually) goes through cycles where the "chorus" gets a little more intense each time it comes around, which is a FANTASTIC representation of the cycles Junko puts herself through of assaulting the lunarians over and over, it's fantastic. When I was younger and first heard this theme and didn't like it very much, one of my criticisms of it was that it didn't go through the usual movements of a Touhou final boss theme, but I think that's actually something that not only makes this track stand out, but also works in its favor for describing this character. Junko is a being of pure rage who lacks pretty much all of her identity. She's a spirit who's very existence is perpetuated by her grudge. That's a pretty stangnant way to live (I say "live" for sake of ease, she's not even a living being anymore; adds to my point). Her theme, similarly, goes through some movements sure, but retains pretty high intensity althroughout, never stopping to have a moment of peace, never taking a moment to sound upbeat or triumphant, never slowing down enough to become beautiful and elegant, it's just. Pure fury. Anyway, THANK YOU for coming to my Ted Talk. TLDR: Theme good, represent character well

Kinda interesting to read comments about how this theme should represent Junko's traits and quirks. Cause Zun himself describe it as something he didn't overthink at all: "i just made a tune that would sound like: yes, this is the final boss". So according to him is just made to sound powerfull, the only purpose is to underline that the player is facing a big shot.

Which makes sense. There's no real extra emotional undertone, no real weakness to this character, unlike the other bosses who have themes with emotional undertones to them. Junko is extremely powerful, knows what she's doing, has a very difficult boss fight and genuinely wants the player dead. In my eyes, she's the true final boss of Touhou. Not to mention the consequences of losing the fight mean the destruction of Gensokyo and the moon.

"The intro to this theme is really good, but I feel like the rest of the theme is really underwhelming. It's taken a lot of listens to enjoy it, but it's still not a theme that I love or was impressed with when I first heard it." Really? I thought the fact that it never slowed down added to the sense of urgency in the battle, and that the intro was really the climax of the song, so everything was just meant to lead up to it when it repeats at the end. I really loved this song the instant I heard it, but different strokes for different folks, I suppose. (That IS the saying, right?) Also, the face that Junko is giving me in this picture is seriously creeping me out. :P

ZUN is an awesome composer, and many of his character / stage themes have reached cult status. Of those, this Junko's theme is my absolute favourite. For some odd reason, during the last few weeks I've found myself listening this almost every other day, occasionally several times a day... Pure, white-hot rage compressed in a single musical piece.

I liked it at first exposure, too. It doesn't quite grab me the way True Administrator and Little Princess do, but it's still a kickass theme in its own right that holds up to the other killer final boss themes of the series.

I feel like it's a theme best suited to be heard in-game the most. A lot of ZUN's music fits both the action of what's happening in-game, yet it's still able to be enjoyed listening by itself without having to actually play the games. I really like Junko's theme but I think it fits in-game so so much better than just listening to it in your own time.

Her name is junko, she is a mom who lost her son, and if possible, her husband and place. Her stage theme is sad, almost like a person through a tragedy. Her battle theme and danmaku have no interests in beauty. Her danmaku is designed for killing you purely. Her hatred is identifinable, and she will destroy anything that gets in her way. And you're pairing her with a rabbit

I just realized something: Junko is a mother that can purify anything. That makes her the purest mom in Gensokyo. "Pure" is synonymous to "wholesome". If her son didn't die, she could be the most wholesome mom in Gensokyo. EDIT: PART TWO OF THIS MESS! Junko's son would probably be just as pure as his mom. He would be the Midoriya of Gensokyo.

I can understand why people didn't like this at first, especially because it ties with Junko, who people hate for her difficulty, but holy shit, the ascending tones are so damn good, and the theme never loses pace. SO good.

I'd also say that they sound like roars of sheer, unbridled rage (or rather... Pure Fury?) at what she's lost. Every breath she takes, every grunt that escapes her body as she moves, is a blast of nothing but unfiltered, vengeful anger.

For the ff fans: it's just overcharted to make people suffer, just like Junko wants to kill the player in the game where she is from with spellcards, the chart is not bad if you listen to literally everything in the song and compare it to the chart, that's why it has so many jacks, jumps and hands.

I must say that I have to disagree with the description. The intro is really good, it really brings out the "finality" feel from this soundtrack. The pace is perfect for a final battle, and the incredibly beautiful "techno strings"(?) along with the amazing melody made me fall in love with this the first time I heard it. Oh, and it's got electric guitars. And awesome drums. Who doesn't love some rock battle music?! And if that still doesn't make it any less underwhelming... Listen closely with headphones. At the "first part" after the intro, it's possible to hear something similar to a choir. Underwhelming? Far from it. I'd say it's *overwhelming* coming from a Touhou soundtrack. No joke!

ZUN once commented when arranging Inanimate Dream from LLS that he imagined that most final boss themes had rock in mind.... So, in a sense, he made it purely just that. A final boss theme.

Honestly after listening to this theme over and over again during her fight it's grown completely on me, it's like one of the first truly non-stop pulse-pounding epic themes I've heard from ZUN and it's filled it's course spectacularly in my opinion. Whilst Junko's fight was a complete bitch to beat, I admire that her gimmick of purification just meant she forsakes flashy patterns for raw danmaku patterns aimed to do what danmaku should do, make your life hell. Her theme has such a great mix of space-like elements but also has a very high, prideful and regal feel to it. It gives me the epic vibes of Little Princess with the godly vibe Suwa Foughten Field did, and adds it's own raw authority tone as well. All in all it's pretty much hit Little Princess-tier for me, Junko herself as a character has the backstory and characterization that makes her my favorite stage 6 boss already too.

Junko really is the final boss of touhou when you think about it. She is pretty much the only Windows character to fight with the intent to kill, subverting the spell card rules introduced all the way back in Touhou 6 and 7 (the "soft reboot" from PC98 to Windows) and her whole motivation is to attack Lunaria, a society introduced way back in Touhou 8 as a truly "other" place from Gensokyo. Combine her with Hecatia, the Goddess of Hell, a land built up in 9 and 11 and it really does feel like a sort of natural conclusion to at least a very major "arc" in the overall story of Gensokyo and the other mystical lands.

Alright. I know that I'm late to the party, but I feel that this needs to be said. I want to shoot down some of the arguments I've been seeing against Junko and her design. 1. "Her theme sucks." Opinion. Doesn't mean fact. If you don't like it, I can respect that. But come on, you alone aren't to decide what is good music or bad music from an objective point of view. At least this theme tries to reflect the sheer amounts of anger and rage that is in Junko. 2. "Her attacks are extremely bland but utterly rage-inducing." I can somewhat agree, but they're supposed to be like that. Junko's power is to purify anything. Her attacks have to reflect that power; they have to be simple but extremely difficult. It provides an accurate manifestation of Junko's abilities in danmaku form. 3. "Even if Junko is supposed to be 'pure,' she's still boring. She shouldn't have been designed like this in the first place." I disagree. Purity is a recurring theme throughout LoLK. Seiran tries to purify you. So does Ringo. Doremy removes your nightmares. The Lunar Capital in Stage 4 is purified. Clownpiece is made of pure life force, nothing else. Therefore, in my eyes, it would be *very* fitting to have the final boss be purity itself, the "climax" to all the purity from before. Now, some people might still be thinking, "I still hate Junko!" and I will respect that, because it is your opinion, which you are entitled to. However, I just want people not to take things at face value and make misguided, uninformed judgements from that. Dig a little deeper, it wouldn't hurt.

+oraphel I would like to share my opinion about: 1) Her theme. While it is more straightforward than the other Final Bosses theme, I think its fits Junko. It's a pure, epic theme that make you think "This is the final battle!". 2) Her attacks. You're right, her danmaku are pure, and they're designed to kill. She refined her patterns to make them pure, simple, frustrating bullet hell. Even her final spellcard is called "Purely Danmaku Hell" to reflect this. It's not a battle of beauty: it's a battle of life and death.

Almost 8 years later (jesus touhou 15 is almost 8 years old that feels wrong) and I don't see ZUN ever topping this, one of the best final boss fight themes of all time in any game, happy mother's day Junko

As Zun said, only the Forsaken will enter Gensokyo. In China, the story of Chang'e and her husband is well known, but the story about the 纯狐 is less known.

I especially like how Junko appears to have purified herself and everything related to her to such an extent that even her theme itself is "pure", as if her power had grown so strong that she broke through the 4th wall (either that or the themes are intradiegetic to Gensokyo, maybe due to the Prismriver or Tsukumo Sisters roaming around, IDK). It embodies endless, undiluted rage and hatred, a nightmare from which the player can never neither completely escape nor truly graze through. Its basis mainly consists of pure, mathematical linear progression in the keynotes eg.0:37-0:48 (it can be seen more clearly on music sheets and the likes, I encourage you to check it out for yourselves, and with every music that Zun brought us) or alternating stairs on the one hand 1:22-1:27, and, on the other hand, on the "Dies Irea" (lit. Day of Wrath) sequence or its derivations: 0:05-0:20 is just repetition+derivations of this (basically, in four pitches, 1=highest, 4=lowest, it can be seen as 1-3-2-4). Those four notes have always been used to represent fear (Divine Fear at its origins, way to tell...) and has been used in countless pieces, from classical music (Mozart, etc) to modern productions (intro of The Shining, in the chorus of "This is Halloween", etc) where its role is the same: induce a sense of danger, of indescribable malice. This theme has been, over centuries, engraved in our very genes to instill fear and panic in us. And Junko's theme is almost solely based on this. Brilliant.

I really like Junko, she's one of my favorite characters, her story is very interesting and i love her theme! Also LoLK is the first Touhou game i completed

When i first got into touhou i thought okina and junko were related due to theyre slightly similar appearance

If we think about it, Junko is the most miserable character in the whole series Her story is basically : -lost her husband and son -abandoned everything she had to get revenge -didn't get revenge and it's unlikely she will ever do -left with nothing but the rage and sadness consuming a part of her soul every day and night -and even if she gets revenge, the feeling of devastation due to losing her son will always haunt her, and she will have to handle it during the thousands of years that a Divin spirit lives, and maybe for eternity if they're immortal
