I just realized why Mokou's theme is named "Reach For the Moon, Immortal Smoke" At the end of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (Kaguya Houraisan is heavily based off of its protagonist), one of the things Kaguya-hime does before returning to the Moon is giving the Emperor of Japan, who she had been in contact with for three years before her departure, a small amount of the elixir of immortality. Upon receiving it, the emperor ordered that it and the letter Kaguya wrote were burned atop the highest mountain in the area (being Mount Fuji) in hopes that the smoke would be affected by the elixir and rise high enough to reach the moon, sending a message back to Kaguya-hime. Thus, "reach for the moon, immortal smoke".

Immortality is the inability to die; powers such as regeneration, invincibility, etc. are separate powers and should not be counted as "part of the package" that comes with immortality. Therefore, if you only had immortality and your head was cut off, you would be stuck living as purely a head for all of eternity. To put it in a more exact manner, immortality is the ability to maintain your consciousness in the matter that makes up your body (or, when your body no longer has any matter left, the ability to maintain your consciousness in nothingness/matter that was originally not from your body [such as through high-speed regeneration]) through even the worst of conditions. That is why, next time you ask a genie to grant you immortality, make sure they include high-speed regeneration of lost body parts in the wish as well.

I like to think that this song is as beautiful as it is because Touhou 8 was originally intended to be the last game in the series, so ZUN wanted to make sure he went the extra mile to make the last boss theme in the series sound as grandiose as possible for what would've been Touhou's sendoff. In contrast, I also like to think that Native Faith sounds as upbeat as it is because Touhou 10 was the "return" of Touhou. Edit: Please read the replies for more information.

I can't really find any sources for this yet, but it does make sense if Imperishable Night was supposed to be the last Touhou game, due to ZUN going all-out with it; The music, gimmick, stage 4 itself, characters, last words and last spells mechanic. Even if I can't find concrete information, it's like a very precise puzzle which has all but one of its pieces in the right place.

Yeahhhh looking back at it, it looks like I misinterpreted some things on MoF's Wikipedia page. Imperishable Night was supposed to be the finale to the series of Touhou games that ZUN set up in EoSD and PB. And the increase in Touhou's popularity inspired ZUN to make Mountain of Faith. So not necessarily the last Touhou game, but the end to a story that has been going on since EoSD. Where as IN was the season finale, MoF was the new season premiere.

When I was elementary, my big brother would listen to Touhou Project music during long road trips. Years later, while I was creating a picture of a kitsune on Adobe Photoshop, this song resurfaced into my head. Then I decided to give the soundtrack of Imperishable Night a listen while I worked on the kitsune picture, being influenced by the vibes the soundtrack gives off and discovering new music. That was how I became obsessed with music from the Touhou Project games and shows how much of a sucka I am for video game soundtracks.

It's more than a title, it's a way of rebellion and a state of regret, for death is a natural part of life, and without death, there's really no ending for living beings. You could even say that living beings only live while awaiting for their deaths. Thus, I think not being able to die is scarier and stressful than death itself.

An eternal flame, bound to this world to live forever. A clash of night and day as old as time itself. But when she sensed a greater plight, she abandoned her original goal to aide. And in turn, she was granted new purpose. The eternal flame does not mean it’s a curse, if one can change the hearth it burns within. Meaning if one sees eternal life as something else than an accursed cycle, then they may better cope.

I love this theme. The beginning is illegaly cool for just piano, then catches crazy and continue being madness. Each part sounds perfect and the trumpet at the end gives a sad touch in the madness It's one of those tunes that stand out to me from the rest

the only thing worse than never dying is to die and then come back to life again. the ability to die but never truly be put to rest.

I have to say that even before I got into TouHou, this song has been one of the most iconic TouHou songs I've heard. The piano is incredible, and it evenly balances the more electronic/percussionist parts of the piece. The varying pacing tells you to run to keep up while dancing on your toes - to be cautious and aware while giving it your all. The music in the TouHou series has never failed to impress me time and time again, each with tunes or pulls on certain instruments. Maybe it's me, but listening to TouHou music never gets old. I could listen to it for hours and never encounter the same song or a similar jingle twice; and that, why it's one of the most iconic things a series can do. I applaud ZUN for that.

@@Bravidunno I mean Hecatia too fits in "vengeful" catagory even tho she is assisting Junko lol. I also do hear that Seiran and Ringo hate the lunarians. Although apparently it was because of Chang'e story that made them hate or not really like the Lunarians. Or it's Maybe just Chang'e.

I remember liking this theme way too much, and I still do. Mokou, Keine, Eirin, and Kaguya has one of the greatest themes in this game imo.

Mokou can’t control the fire itself, she can, but she is also a strong magician so don’t worry if she uses water magic or something... but looks like she is used to burn and being burned

Am I the only one who finds Mokou not easy at all? I can understand most patterns of the other extra bosses (even if I can't capture them), but Mokou is an exception.

+IA VOCALOID Mokou is quite random when it comes to difficulty tho the 3rd and the 4th spellcards are really easy, since both have a semi-blindspot. The 1st, the 2nd, the 5th, the 6th and the 7th ones aren't. Most of the timeout spellcard is also quite easy, But Fujiyama Volcano and the nonspell before that... -.- Barely but I've beaten her. I only beat Ran Yakumo so far aside from Mokou, and she was a lot easier. (like, Ran took me 1 and half days of practice to beat and when I managed to beat her, I still had 1 life to spare with a bomb)

ProtoManZero ShadowStarX I've only recently beat Mokou with Yukari, and the entire time I was baffled, since I hadn't died until her 4th spellcard... Yeah, Ran is really easy, besides a few spellcards. She is the only extra boss who I've beaten with 3 different characters. I don't know how, but I somehow captured her last spellcard on my first try, I wish I could do that again... I've also beaten Raiko with SakuyaA. For some reason, playing as SakuyaA makes Raiko a breeze, while playing with any other character makes her nearly impossible for me ._.

Lol idk about using other characters, but Reimu/Yukari and their smol hitbox alongside their incredibly long time to deathbomb make Mokou the easier EX-boss for me. Like srsly, I struggle to survive against Suwako and Flandre but even after one year without practice I can pretty much beat Mokou with 4 lives left

mokou keeps money, she doesn't waste it on heating nor cooking, she blows everything up with her flames

i don't even play touhou series but when i'm listening to this song for the first time, i'm just like "ah i love this" then it's just become my favourite list
