An interesting fact that Kaguya's backstory is essentially comprised of a Japanese myth. The myth's story has had some things changed through it's retellings, such as Kaguya from Okami, but most that's established in an amnesiac girl from the moon that was adopted by a bamboo cutter.

Basically Kaguya is a princess from the moon who overheard a women on the moon singing a song of the earth and for some reason whenever she finished it it would make her cry. In the moon nobody cries, there is only happiness. Kaguya was so curious she broke the rules of the moon and went to earth to see what the lady felt. Kaguya made lots of friends and grew close ties to her earth father and mother. She felt all sorts of emotions and in the night of the full moon Kaguya was taken back to the moon and she cried even when her memories of earth were erased. Because ZUN was a nice guy he gave Kaguya the power to make the night eternal so that she could never return to the moon. Aaaaaand that's where Imperishable night starts I guess. So whos the bad guy Kaguya or Reimu/Marisa?

Robo lopez This is the Ghilbhi interpretation-- In most interpretations, the moon is better, but still a bit imperfect. (ZUN's interpretation makes the Moon appear to be a utopia, but an elitist utopia as well) Kaguya is either sent out as a child, is banished, or runs away being curious of the world. She gets lots of shit thrown at her, goes back to the moon, gets more shit, and then she runs back to earth in the protection of fellow moon runaways and a mass of rabbits. Besides being kinda a feminist symbol, (lol she's an independent woman who don't need no man), she's a sympathetic figure as she represents all those who want to find peace in life, but just can't. Kaguya's sin here, however, is that she's being selfish: In protecting herself, she endangered everyone else. (Marisa makes comments about night time youkai attacks, for example, jokingly, but this is probably likely.)

Robo L Look, I know the Takahata movie was beautiful, but this is *his* retelling of the story. The reason why Kaguya went to the Earth in the "original" tale, if there even is one at this point because it's so old, varies from a crime (which is the Touhou version) to a war she needed to be put away from. In Imperishable Night, the story is even more different : Kaguya escaped from the emissaries long ago, and only thanks to Eirin, who was one of them, but betrayed them out of care for the Moon Princess. They fled to Eientei, and eventually Reisen came by, telling them of the war that had started between humans who were conquering the moon and the Lunarians. One day, Reisen received a message saying she needed to come back because a new war had started. Obviously, if the emissaries came to take her away, they would find Kaguya and take her back too. So to protect them both, Eirin sealed the Earth with her fake moon spell, thinking no one would notice (as "humans are too stupid to understand", according to her own words). However, youkai in Gensokyo, as Kaguya says, draw their power from the moon. So obviously, they noticed the problem and, with the help of their human allies (and the spell of Imperishable Night, which *they* cast, not Kaguya), stopped the incident, which was pointless because the emissaries wouldn't have ever passed through the Great Hakurei Barrier.

***** Kaguya is special in that a full tale is about her specifically, while others are part of a species which tales tell about. Not the same thing. Besides, it's such a dare to take a strong figure in the collective imaginary (like if you took Snow White here) and make her a video game character.

***** ... The eternal night thing isn't Kaguya's doing - heck, at the end of the game, she *breaks* the eternal night spell like candy! It's the doing of the Protagonist. Kaguya's protection is sealing the real full moon so they can't find Kaguya - so if anything they wanted the night to end faster!

Imperishable Night is still what I consider to be ZUN's musical and game masterpiece...

Ohoho, exactly the theme for someone whose beauty is beyond the land. She doesn't even use her ability in the fight; she just shows her collections. The only time she actually uses her ability is the last spells, and we all have seen how wonderful is her very last one.

I believe both Kaguya and Mokou realized marrying someone is a bad idea, mostly because they would outlive the princes who demand their hands because they actually age unlike Kaguya and Mokou, and witnessing the death of your loved one is heartbreaking damn it ! What makes this song stand out among Touhou songs for me is how it almost feels like a narrative. The progression of the melody, the use of the different motifs, all of it feels like a progression between different parts of a story, the story of the fight.

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter 竹取物語 (Taketori Monogatari) was written between the late 9th and early 10th centuries. By the way. The 9th and 10th centuries in Japan were the Heian period. The 14th century in Japan was the Kamakura period. Therefore, 輝夜姫 Kaguyahime (Princess Kaguya) is an image of the princess of the moon about 1000 years ago.

I didn't really like this theme, but after I watch Studio Ghibli's movie, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, which is very sad. I loved this theme now.

My theory is that, after Kaguya and Eirin were banished, did they already end up in Gensokyo or end up somewhere else in the Outside World? If they did end up in the outside world before transferring, then Kaguya must've ended up in a bamboo forest in Japan and that was when rumors of her unearthly beauty spread when she was found by a bamboo cutter.

祝raidou okay real talk "eirin was not banished because she did not drank the hourai elixir but kaguya did and she was executed for many times but failed (she's immortal bish) so she is bannished to the earth for thousand years ended up in somewhere else at the world (not gemsokyo). She has many male admires but she dont want to marry them wich lead kaguya to ask for the five impossible request to prevent them to marry her manny have failed wich includes mokou's dad . And then she came across gensokyo where she was save from them. After she was free from the exile she dont want to came back to the lunar capital she want to live among the earthlings then eirin come to accompany her.

Commonly accepted theory is Tewi Inaba provided both Kaguya and Eirin hiding place inside Bamboo Forest in exchange Eirin taught all earth rabbit about military and medics before The Great Hakurei Barrier risen, and Tewi neglected to tell Yukari (or intentionally not telling Yukari for her own agenda) about these two runaways until IN incident

As the Scarlet and Ghost teams struggle with Eirin, the Boundary and Magic teams reach Kaguya's room... Kaguya: Well, well, well. I didn't expect any visitors. Marisa: Nobody expects MariAri! Our chief weapons are fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and... what was the other one? ...Alice? Alice: Whatever. We may have gotten tangled with the other girls a couple hours ago, but together nothing can stop us! Kaguya: Excuse me, what needs stopping? Yukari: Fine. Let me explain everything. When your caretaker created this barrier, all of Gensokyo became sealed off from the sun and moon's power. The waters began to run still and the plants began to shrivel. Kaguya: What? All Eirin told me was that the ambassadors from the moon must be stopped. They are scheduled to arrive tomorrow night. Yukari: Anyway. I didn't know about that either, so in order to resolve the mystery, I stopped the border of night and day so I could investigate continuously. Reimu: But now that we're here, the barrier is going down, and you're going with it! Kaguya: Wait, there is no need for us to fight. Eirin has grown to love the Earth, and who's to say what the lunar ambassadors will do to it to bring her back? Yukari: Don't believe in Eirin's lies. Alice: This! Marisa: Ends! Reimu: Now!

Feels nice listening to this song after a while, i've been putting LoLK tracks in my head since its my new favorite but this game is a runner up and damn do i love the music in it too.

Same here. Why? Her design is beautiful, I love her theme, her canon personality. Plus, being a carefree, idle cinnamon roll of a princess who's also kind of terrible at cooking but still really lovely (canon) is a much better best girl for me than a NEET (fanon).

this is probably the more underrated of the IN soundtracks, this theme really proves kaguya as herself, the former lunarian that got banished from the moon for impurity reasons of drinking the hourai elixir along with her loyal friend eirin who decided to betray the lunarians and went to the earth (gensokyo) with kaguya, where they lived for centuries, to me this theme really gives me the age and immortality vibes kaguya has, she isn’t a little child, she is a literal lunar princess herself

It’s building up (Reminds me of Maniacal Princess from Touhou 3) (Epic piano, btw!!) 0:15 Uh oh, now that sounds like the music of a lunatic princess… 0:27 - 0:55 Cool! 0:55 Nice 1:08 Nice 1:21 - 1:58 Noice! 1:59 - 2:09 Nice This DEFINITELY music sounds way more final-boss-y than the previous one. The first final boss music gives the vibe of “You’ve encountered the true mastermind! Defeat her and save the world! Victory is imminent. Don’t give up, you can DO THIS!!” because it sounds so heroic, and this second final boss music gives the vibe of a long, tough, decisive battle against an evil final entity instead because it sounds more malicious. I like the first one a little better but this is GREAT! :D Only masterful composers can make music so good to the point where I’ll write entire essays about it. By the way, my favorite part is 2:10 - 2:37! (HECK YEAH.) Now it’s time for the final spell music.
