Amazing how often people see someone falling into severe mental issues and just stand back with that, "Not my problem " attitude. You don't have to be their therapist, but if you see someone who obviously needs help and don't realise it themselves, at least speak up and tell them they need help.

I would have blown my top and put a stop to Kolya's bullying the instant I realized what was going on. I was a victim of severe bullying as a kid myself, so I know exactly how it feels, and I have zero tolerance for that kind of crap these days. I would have called Kolya out for his bullying the instant it began and warned him to stop it immediately or I would leave the game and encourage everyone else to do the same, and that we would just find a new DM or one of us would act as the new DM and Kolya would not be allowed to join the new group. I don't care what his reasons are, there is no excuse for Kolya's behavior and abuse.

And ultimately there are time where you can have 100 people praising and trying to bring you up that thats not their fault if the perosn in question either isnt listening to it or taking it to heart. It is no ones job as you said to reassure someone, especially if they had already tried to before

Considering that the party seemed to accept being called "stupid" by a DM for months, it's not surprising the OP and group are all "shocked!" about not calling the DM out on his sh*t. Allowing the DM to verbally abuse Freddy, dying for getting up, the dice falling, etc. I know one might be acclimated to a certain style, but this is literally turning your brain off. I can't imagine calling anyone at my table, both personal and my monthly one shots, stupid without getting at least a serious talk and, at worst, a punch in the jaw. It's no surprise Kolyo developed a god complex, they all allowed it. This behavior doesn't happen in a vacuum.

What DM was doing is called "negging." It's a manipulation strategy that involves giving constant negative feedback no matter how well the other person does, and convince them that they need you to "fix" them. To be fair, if used sparingly it can be an effective means for educators and trainers to break down the defenses and get through to a problem student. ...but it's also often used by narcissists as a means of subjugation, because if abused - especially on a person who already has low self esteem like Freddie clearly did - it can basically put a person completely under your own control.

Nah. Freddy is dumb asf for complying to such horseshit. Deserves to get booted with Kolya if you ask me. No matter how insecure someone is, if you can't stand up for yourself even once, then you're just wasting people's time. And sorry, my niceness has it's limits. I can't keep being nice to someone with borderline stockholm syndrome that just refuses to ever help themselves first and keeps going to the side of the person literally everyone else hates, who is also verbally and psychologically abusing him. That's called being a henchman.

Part 1: Nope, not wrong. DM was acting needlessly cruel and stupid. Part 2. Kolyo is now going to be the villain on my next game session/Hackney novel I am trying to write, and he will be a Jim Jones type because this guy is that! Part 3: This is why when someone does bad Chaotic Evil we all call it CHAOTIC STUPID! As GM, I would have asked why he is so obsessed with terrorizing new players, and killing their characters. Someone should have told DM about Kolyo's MO by now. I would then spend a moment to look at the rules and read them to make sure if that was how it worked then told him its not how it works. Third, I would have had a three strikes rule. Strike One, warning that this wasn't cool, please stop it. Strike 2: More firm warning that this is far from cool, that one more strike would get him booted. Strike three: I do not want to see you on any of my games ever again. Pack up your things and leave, all while holding back to some degree of success or another the desire to tell him do not let the door hit you on the way out.

Oh my. What a trainwreck. Can't say I would have endured much playing with Kolya. Welp, it kinda reminded me of someone I played with. To be fair, right at the introduction I didn't have a nice impression of the dude. He acted childish, entitled, edgelord and there were rumours of his misogynistic ways. Right off the bat, he didn't like me and I, ofc, didn't care. Then, one day, one of our mutual "friends" decided to help us become friends through DnD! What an amazing idea, right? Yeeah, nope. I tried my best to be nice and civil (the things I do to keep the peace) and at first, it seemed that he was doing the same. But then, he would throw a temper tantrum quite often, especially if his character didn't do well in combat (almost every time), he would bark around that his character was the strongest and could kill everyone in the party at will, and never ceased to imply that he would love to kill someone of the group, would always try to act like the mysterious lone wolf that was too good for the group, never shut up whenever he helped/saved someone of the group (mostly in combat. Things like: "I killed that kobold that hit you! I SAVED YOU") and would always b*tch around the decisions that the group needed to take (at least here he wasn't the only one). Often he would use his character to say things that he wanted to say without the backlash. Soo, there was a LOT of Meta-gaming. What a nightmare! Oh, and believe me, he wasn't the BIGGEST problem in that group. Heh, that group was truly cursed.

Shocked that OP and people basically sat there and let that kind of behaviour carry on for so long. There also seems to be a lot of inexperience in general taking hold with people running games and being - I want to say ambitious - outside of their depth of knowledge and others in the group, taking the time to learn more or just claiming they know more, taking advantage of that inexperience with systems, worlds and mechanics too. In regards to the Vampire portion of the post, this really really shows through. There's a general lesson there - doing something new? Take it slow and small and learn in steps - I do this with new players to games all the time. New group? New Player? Then we are doing some basic things that set the core of how the game works and building up.

As for the abused player- you can try to explain how they've become a victim, but if they don't get it and continue defending the abuser you gotta kick them too. I'm astounded that people keep putting up with this crap from others. Also, yes, V20 is broken, but not nearly as obliterated as the lore in V5. It genuinely makes my chest hurt, even as a relatively new player to World of Darkness, at how much they destroyed of the original clans and made it impossible to play older vamps. It's depressing how much they dumbed it down in every way. If you want a really amazing time with Vampire, try Vampire: The Dark Ages, V20. The dark ages is like the golden era of vampires and there are no sects/factions to deal with, which makes it way more fun and makes more sense. There's also no technology to ruin powers and make them unusable. Also, if you learn the period lore of tDA, you'll realize what utter scumbags Tremere are. There's no way they should have survived to modern nights. They're the equivalent to sexist white supremacists. Seriously, no exaggeration. I've been playing in the vamp community for about 3 years now, and literally half-decent human being irl, even if they like dark edgy content, hate the Tremere. We've got a group of over a dozen people that all support the idea of hunting down all Tremere in any future game and eliminating them. WoD isn't just dark and edgy, it was written with a lot of very bad and problematic content (cringy stereotyping of mental health issues, SA of minors, bestiality... to name a few issues), which goes along with being often poorly written. Still, avoiding and homebrewing out the worst aspects, it's a fascinating game and can be a dark and interesting challenge if you play it with GOOD and decent human beings. I STRONGLY SUGGEST to NOT play it with random strangers. A huge chunk of the community out there are terrifyingly toxic, elitist, even dangerous, and should be put on registered watch lists by cops or blacklisted from gaming communities.
