    It's probably something to do with how prevalent kinky roleplay is in the furry fandom(Note; I'm a furry) and he just assumed that meant she was into that kind of stuff because 'everyone' is. Yeah, maybe every furry on the websites he frequents are into it(there are sites specifically for furry ERP) but under no circumstances does that EVER give a green light to roleplay sexual assault on anyone without their express consent.

    Even if the OP in the first story WAS a furry, what that guy did was NOT cool. Consent is important, no matter what your kink or lifestyle is. The OP did NOT consent at any point in time to his character's advances. I know a lot of people will go "What do you expect from a Furry?" when the issue wasn't that he was a furry. The root of the issue was that he was a man who felt he was entitled to a woman's body and used the idea that she might be a furry to justify his actions in game.

  • @Damalon01

    @Damalon01

    I disagree with you on one point. That he was a man and that she was a woman is irrelevant. The only things that matter is the sense of entitlement and the lack of consent. The way you put this made it sound, at least to me, that it would have been OK if it was a woman harassing a man while feeling entitled to his body. Which is just as abominable in my book.

    First Story: Nick had no sense of boundaries, regardless of what OP did. The DM was most likely just caught in shock that he acted so brazenly and took OP's reaction as a chance to stop it. Inviting OP back, however, is less understandable since it's clear they had no more trust in Nick. The assumptions that next made about Opie solely because she made an anthropomorphic character are astounding. Not only didn't he assume that that meant she was a furry but he also assumed that her being a furry Matt should automatically be interested in him just cuz he was also a furry. Further he assumed that if you were interested in him I would automatically mean she was interested in Erp and that if she was interested in Erp it would mean that she was automatically okay with it being in front of a party and out of nowhere. I highly enjoy playing animal-like characters simply because it's fun. I am by no means a fury. I just enjoy the flavor and find it interesting to play a non-human character. Despite this, I have been mocked for being a fury when I played a tabaxi wizard/bard in a game I joined. There were already a ton of red flags about this game and group, but being made fun of for being a "fury" and no one allowing me to be otherwise even when I spoke up really hit a sore spot for me. I know that not all furies are bad and that some are actually very sweet. Heck, I think one of my best friends from college might be a fury, and I absolutely adore her. However, given the many horror stories I heard about furries and was worried that my character I loved so much and had been dying to play would be turned into a horror story. I ended up leaving that campaign for other reasons after just one session. The furry joke was only one aspect of that horror story. I think I might actually post that horror story in the Reddit for the Doge to read one day. Not sure if he'll ever actually read it or not, but maybe he'll enjoy what an absolute disaster of a horror story it was. If he does read it, I hope others will learn some valuable lessons from it about how to treat your players and not screw them over with lies and gaslighting.

    Ugh, story 1. In my experience I've dealt with a lot of weird moments in games I've played or DM'd, I respect OP's approach 100%. You may be at a new table but if you play the victim it will likely not end well. I remember one of my characters galloping down the road to confront an npc shit merchant (a term I use to describe trinket sellers, black marketeers, or other luxury sellers) with the soul purpose of bringing him to justice for the rape of another dmnpc. The DM did not attempt to stop it, and to his credit he said the npc was an old copy of his brothers character so he'd been waiting for justice for over 30 years lol. As such, I rolled up my sleeves in character after the dirtbag tried to bribe my character and put on such a fierce display that guy walked into the town jail, so badly beaten and with broken fingers, begging the guards to jail him lol. I remember asking the DM why he'd let that happen in his campaign because it was awful, but he never said why, just that justice had finally come for the worst character he'd ever known. Whatever THAT was, I hope it helped the DM get over it. Never, and I do mean never, allow yourself to be victimized in an rpg unless you consent, which honestly I hope you all are smart enough not to do.

    I'm glad that the first story that someone convinced her that it wasn't the female character that cause it, it was a creep. You can't internalize sh*t like this it just gives them more power in the long run. If you give into your fear and just never played a certain type of character despite wanting to play it then you lost... maybe he didn't win here either because he didn't get anywhere with you but by giving into that fear you relinquish your own power and your own agency and allow guys like him to dictate your life... even if it's indirectly. I hate that kind of victim mentality in it's own way it's just as toxic as creeps like Nick. By not playing a character like that because of the incident you are ultimately proclaiming that those types of characters are the problem and that if it wasn't for the ability to play a female in game that the scene wouldn't have happened... now it might have not happened but i've played many games in different genders and races and i've had good experiences and bad ones... these experiences were formed from a collection of people not just one aspect of it. I don't blame my Firbolg for the game I joined where I was stuck with a racist old man who flamed everyone... I don't blame my Sorcerer Kobold when I got into a game where a girl assumed being nice to her meant I wanted to date her and she proceeded to sort of stalk me online, I don't blame my Gnollish warrior for the game where I was bullied for an entire session by the group for being a 'pervert' for being a furry when the session prior the bard LITERALLY tried to seduce the dragon, the Barbarian took a new whore home everynight, and the female swashbuckler distracted town guards by flashing her TRIPLE D JUGS... If I let these instances dictact me not playing this characters I never would have made Stinkun the Kobold Sorcerer who rode around on his donkey named Azz. I never would have played Ellinwey the Firbolg Druid who convinced an entire town to go vegan. I never would have played Mince the Gnollish Paladin of Selune who single handedly held off a horde of 50+ evil gnolls while the party ran down a mountain side from the portal they were spilling out of. Short version... don't become a victim... it gives up your own power especially when the cause of the problem was some dude who realistically has almost NO bearing on your life once you block and leave the group. He has no power... don't give him any.

    For the first story, that's not something you pull on someone out of the blue. You need to check with the other player to see if they'd be okay with that kind of development. Heck, I could see some potential for the continuation of that story. Let's say foxboy was naive enough to think she'd be down with it. That missing finger would be one heck of a wakeup call to trigger some self improvement. If he was the kind of dirt bag that didn't care if she was into it (and the player was competent) an intra party animosity dynamic could stir up some juicy drama if the table was rp heavy. The fox jealous that what he wants being just out of reach and not wanting to risk more fingers. Boiling up to either him (the character) leaving the party and becoming a personal antagonist.

    I mean, on the one hand ttrpgs can be a great place to find love due to meeting new people and how close many ttrpg groups can get. It's how I met my husband and we have been married for 10 years lol. But that should not be the biggest priority when going into a game. The main focus should be playing a game and having fun. Trying to force romance will always backfire

    The story of Kiva made me so angry! The DM should have, above the table right in the moment, told Nick "No, you are not going to SA fellow PCs in my game. The answer is no!" For one thing, even if Kiva's player had been a furry doesn't mean she consented to him making sexual advances on her character. It makes me both sad and enraged that Kiva's player was doubting herself and saying "maybe i didn't handle it right?" when the DM failed to speak up!

    Love the cats, thank you for the content, it’s a good thing to help people recognize major and minor red flags in their games. That being said, I have to advise anyone reading to normalize stopping the game. If you are uncomfortable, or you see another player is uncomfortable, stop the game, be a complete ass about it if necessary. Your time is valuable, don’t burn it playing with bad groups, don’t just accept things happening to your character if you didn’t consent to it before hand. Take care of yourselves.

    Having been a furry for 10 years, I’ve observed that there are two types of furries: Those who simply appreciate anthropomorphic animals in literature and media (they may just enjoy talking animals or animals that walk on two legs and wear clothes), and those who are in the fandom. Of the latter type, there are three more subdivisions - those who simply use furry lingo and enjoy the company of other furries; those who are self-conscious or who have been through traumatic experiences and are VERY sensitive about consent (I’ve seen many buttons for fursuiters that say “Do not hug” or “Ask before hugging”); and finally there are the perverts and agitators - people like Nick - who give furries a bad rep and who are only tolerated by enablers. Just as with other fandoms, there are people who get off on deplorable things; but, IMHO, I think that part of the issue is due to the fact that the furry fandom in particular tends to attract a lot of people with antisocial tendencies: Firstly, the fandom is very neurodivergence-positive. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People who struggle with interpersonal human interaction (either from mental or emotional reasons) often find animals a lot easier to connect with over people, so to them, the fandom is simply a place where they can feel safe and find community. Unfortunately, these people can sometimes struggle with social interactions outside of the fandom, leading to misunderstandings about the fandom as a whole. Then there are the narcissists, sociopaths, megalomaniacs, and deviants - they’re usually attracted to the fandom either because of sick and twisted fetishes, or because there are a lot of vulnerable people they can get to admire them, or worse, manipulate into doing or believing what they want them to (including those sick and twisted things). There are so many horror stories in the fandom due to these people that the term “furry drama” is sadly a defining feature within the fandom. Personally, I believe that the fandom’s wide acceptance of sex “positivity” (read as “enabling”) from the beginning has led to much of that drama, both in and out of the fandom - from problems with pedophilia to zoophilia to SA, and extremist counter-movements; if you allow/encourage adult stuff, you’re going to find adult problems. (Fortunately the fandom is pretty quick to kick out abusers, but not always before the damage has already been done - and frankly, the line between “okay” and “abusive” within the fandom is pretty thin, or even overlapping, so it can be a powder keg). I’ve got some horror stories of my own about such furry drama, but since this is a D&D channel, I’ll refrain from telling them here. (As an aside, I should note that the furry fandom helped me find good friends I never would have found without it. Also, furry conventions are a blast if you like anthropomorphic animals - just avoid the room parties and late night panels if you’re not into NSFW stuff; anything else that’s not good clean fun requires an ID to view). And there you have it - probably more than you ever wanted to know about the furry fandom. 😅 And yeah, Nick trying to throw all furries under the bus to cover for his own bad behavior was not cool.

    The problem didn’t come from OP not being direct enough or that the stalkers/creepy players couldn’t get the hint- the problem was entirely them and their refusal to accept no as an answer. They understand what No means, they just didn’t want to accept that someone wasn’t interested in them. They both understood that the other person wasn’t interested in them- they just didn’t care. Another I wanted to point out is that, no matter how long you’ve been friends with someone, that kind of behavior is unacceptable. The DM was making excuses for Nick when he was absolutely in the wrong. I have to wonder if he’s done similar things before that were brushed under the rug because his friends would much rather ignore the behavior than do anything about it.
