I make my own tabletop rpg, taking lots of inspiration from games like dungeons and dragons, pathfinder, icrpg and OSR stuff. This project is a way to combine all my hobbies of terrain painting, sculpting, converting and projects like my nurgle diaries. The game I create is called Arcane Ugly, and uses Knave by the questing beast as the foundation.

Thanks for all your hard work mate! Its been a blast. Such a lovely system and your designer commentary helped so much with the hacking process. The spirit of your ruleset and the encouragement to make the system your own speaks to me so much and is incredibly inspiring. Thanks again. Connect with me anytime!

literally, this was how I DM'd for a "Dungeons and Dragons" game. Me and my friends never played DND before, I've never even read any of the rulebooks. All I knew was a handful of staple monsters and a loose grasp of how the game actually worked. So I made my own super loose game logic and basically told my friends "You can do whatever you want, so long as you can roll it." It may have been the most far-off thing from DND but it was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had, it might help that I am pretty creative, do video game design, and have a plethora of monsters I've made at my disposal but who knows.

That happened for my first ever game of 5e :) i wanted to play as smough from dark souls 1, and we went through the entire character creation provess until we arrived at weight. I rolled max on it and we messed up the multiplier so i think he got... several tons? Every "streneous" action i took had a 1/20 chance to cause an earthquake, and then i rolled to see how bad it was on the rivhter scale (d10). First ever encounter and i ended up burying the town we were heading to in a category 8 earthquake. After that i ended up straight up creating the grand canyon after my character stumbled down a hill. Good game, but we only played one session.

Cmike here, I'm starting to DM and am making a series about what I'm learning as a beginner DM and how I'm trying to find my style of storytelling, by "using" my friend's in a off camera adventure as my workshop. So this video speaks so many truths to me. Love it, you mad scientist you!!

I wanna make a wargame with historically accurate units from ww2 with the game having different game modes like air based, sea based, tank based and basically that all together in a huge battle with ground troops!
@michaelfranciotti3900

I wanna play. At least air/land battles for sure. Not sure how sea units would be employed with land units other than offshore arty or troop transport. Maybe a campaign mode where the outcome of sea/air battles will determine the availability of seaborne arty and beach heads in future land battles?

This was great modivation for me. Im actually making one myself though its from the ground up... there is some seriously good ideas apart of this i might use as an insperation for me. I love the limited inventory idea.
I did this a few years ago as my rpg group were looking for something different that ticked all of our boxes. This video has inspired me to go back to it and see what I could improve or regenerate. Awesome! I am looking forward to giving Arcane Ugly a go!
I could watch content like this all day, grade A stuff man. Love the idea of collaborative world building.
I have been trying to come up with a concept for a tabletop rpg for years and my man just put one together in like 10 mins
@kyleighbreanne9656

It probably took him a lot longer than ten minutes to develop his concept
The soul keeper, a beast of knowledge and personality of everyone who succumbs to their end by him, causing him to be an insane creature of mixed personality thriving for destruction hoping to find a pure heart soul that will get in the mix and end their suffering bringing them happiness eternally.
As someone who's happily been playing D&D 5e for years now weekly, I find this very charming and exciting!
I keep coming back to this series to be inspired. I love the way you think about game design, and the way you’re sticking to your style gives me confidence in my own! Best of luck with Arcane Ugly going forwards!
That little wizard in the thumbnail is one of the most awesome things I’ve seen in the last decade. Thanks!
The thing that jumped out to me when making spell names was “Foaming venom.” Sounds like a bad ass spell.
@nathanex5122

Maybe if you shot it and it collides with a object or creature it rapidly exoands into bouncy or sticky foam maybe even immobilize the target. What do you think
@thelittlestgiant
3 жыл бұрын
@@nathanex5122 Yeah, just imagining a venom-wad slapping into someone and then turning into a sticky foam. Sounds lethal, even without the movement-snare effect. I was originally only imagining it sputtering and foaming from the caster’s hands as they were preparing the spell, becoming an extra foamy mess once it collided with the target is much cooler. I guess it could do both, even! 😁

So glad i found your channel dude! mixing some of my most favourite hobby's! and your mini work and how you went about creating your own table top rpg is truely inspiring! Cheers from the netherlands!
I'm also working on my own RPG system, and I'm definitely interested in seeing how your game turns out. So many cool ideas here!
Thank you so much for showing the working bit - the reading of preexisting rpg books, watching other creators and their thoughts on their favourites etc This is such an important piece of videos like yours where people make stuff but never show the actual making and the steps leading up to it.
Heck, that deer skull art was amazing 😍
No one has ever made me wanna become a patron on someone's patreon campaign than you have. Good stuff, I really like the sound of it!
This feels very akin to dungeon crawl classics in certain ways, recently one of my absolute favorite systems. I love the process you went though in creating this and think it looks incredibly interesting!
I love the absolute head-first dive into OSR gaming! Also, the moment you mentioned a class-less, level-less system where you level up by magic items, Knave was literally the first thing that came to mind, so glad to see that it was the obvious choice for you too!
Ohhhhhh boi. I am more excited for this than you even know. Cheers mate. Look forward to watching this happen!!
This is like, the best idea ever. Now I really want to make my own Tabletop RPG game. I love this so much!
This was an incredibly fun 10 minutes. This video was frantic and informative and I can’t wait to see where this goes!
Okay, now I am totally inspired! Really! Thank you so much!
Super cool, loved following your process on this.
Miscast, here again with inspiration for us all. This is so awesome!
I found you more or less randomly and I am absolutely stunned by your video style. Great stuff!
Beautiful. Super creative. Way to go!
Dude! You're an inspiration! I love your ideas! 🤘
The best thing in this: you do sound like having fun while designing your own RPG system. It would be interesting to hear more in-depth info on how you approach(ed) various aspects of this. E.g. balance. Or cutting out content/ideas (if that is/was a thing at all).
This awesome and so inspiring. I’ve undertaken the same process of making my own ttrpg. Knave was one of my biggest inspirations as well.
You're implementing a lot of the same ideas that I had as well, and it's a joy to see. I really enjoyed the vid
Yes! Hankerin' Fernale, Runehammer! Love his stuff:)
Excited doesn't begin to describe how I feel about this!
Omg this is the only video I've seen, and I already love you! I was hooked when I saw you hit the books, I was like "oh dang he's All In. Yeehaw!" This sounds awesome! Also, I love the exploding wizard. Looking forward to more videos!
Awesome video, very interested in see where this is going!
Gods the production of this video slaps honestly. The subject of the video is super cool but the production is next level!
That was a great joy to watch.
Seeing this video this morning is inspiring me to attempt my own game creation. Nice work!
Hi Trent. I've just started my own journey in game design and a KZread channel, and my friend just pointed me to your channel. Just wanted to say your work and broad creative exploration is super inspiring, I'm really enjoying all the playful ways that you're coming up with, documenting and expressing your ideas. The little lightbox frame for drawing on the opposite side of the paper is a neat visual treat, and your game sounds fantastic! Definitely following your work and hope my channel compliments yours in the space of making games! Thanks and looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Aye this came out and ive just been diving into building my own game too! Its an interesting journey but im loving it!
Your videos are neat. Your cinematography is novel. I just keep rewatching these videos... Love the art... The video effects.. And your review of knave...
I'm very interested in watching the next episode of this.
After watching your video, I am overflowing with inspiration!
VERY excited to see where this goes and for it to release. I'd love to run it for my local group!
Glad you are doing this, I have been doing this with other systems
This is awesome. I might just use it when you're done.
This looks so fun! Can’t wait to see it develop 😄
I'm so hyped, this game sounds awesome. I've been looking for a good combat-heavy/rules-light rpg, and not only does this fit that bill, but the theme is so alluring.
This actually inspired me to start working on my own system again. Hoping to see more videos soon!
Great vid it's inspired me to work with my own players to try and homebrew a new system!
I'm excited for this! Can't wait to see what it becomes :)

I'm already looking forward to it
Sounds great and souper helpful to hear about knave
This video gave me the idea of deleting almost 50+ hours of a gunsligner oriented D&D campaign and creating my own tabletop RPG as well. Thank you so much for sharing your passion, very encouraging for me as an artist! And huge thanks to Kave as well for allowing to understand basic tabletop rpg concepts ❤️ can't wait to see where both our games will grow
I definitely hope you're planning on sharing this rpg when you've got it all set up. I really love the idea and would love to share it with my friends
you making this video has helped me with my own elder scrolls TTRPG that im making thank you
Sounds excellent. The more folks who are interested in roleplaying, the more variety in rules there needs to be, especially the quick to learn fast to play kind of rules. Interested to see what you cook up.
This sounds awesome! I wanted to do a DnD session with my family while they’re all in the house, and this sounds a lot more accessible to them than DnD and super fun.
This Is freaking beautiful! I want to play It already
Yoooo im super excited to see the next episodes. I'd like to do something similar myself and this helped me get motivated and give me some ideas. I really like how magic is a universal thing that anyone can do, but the added risk if it goes wrong.
Love that mixed minis :D
So cool to see a shout-out to Runehammer and ICRPG. Loved the video. Instant sub
this is super cool, I really like the idea that the monsters in this world are adventures who have done too much magic or been cursed so much that they are now just monsters, I think the kitbashed models could really help to sell that idea... anyway, i love the video keep up the good work!
I want to play arcaine ugly right now also found this on recommend!!! Hope to see more from this channel

OMG finally iv been trying to find a youtuber that makes his own rpgs for solong.
This is awesome! Keep at it!!!
"The internet is awesome for finding anything in the world that you were looking for, but book are great for finding things you didn't know you were looking for." Now that's a phrase that i'll carry for the rest of my life
I'm actually making my own Tabletop wargame/RPG. Glad to know Knave is a simple system!
The troll with the chest head made me laugh out loud, class
So so good man! One idea/philosophy I love is the trait or tag based idea... It's so incredibly powerful and simple. For example: when you think of iconic characters like Indiana, Batman or Luke Skywalker you primarily think of them in terms of just a few key "traits" that really define them... Maybe they're super charismatic, educated (archaeology) but have a fear of snakes... maybe they just like wearing a an inch of rubber and beating people up in the middle of the night, boom, instant solid impression of the character :) hahaha
Miscast. Ima gonna do this Everybody. Hell yes
Now I really want to play this game lol. I could just imagine the possibilities. The idea of the different starter weapons having weird effects and bizarre spellbooks with funny names gives me some serious adventure time vibes. I'm looking forwards to it! And if it's simple enough to play, I could totally see myself playing it with my younger brothers. Keep it up my guy!
