Feat. @Black Magic Craft @Raqrex Art @NerdCraftHQ @Berserkerworks @3D Printed Tabletop
I continue making my own tabletop rpg, taking lots of inspiration from games like dungeons and dragons, pathfinder, icrpg and OSR stuff. Episode two's focus in on making game art. This project is a way to combine all my hobbies of terrain painting, sculpting, converting and projects like my nurgle diaries. The game I create is called Arcane Ugly, and uses Knave by the questing beast as the foundation.

Hey! I was wondering when us chickens could learn to play this??? I have an idea for a new magic class, Manusaii, which is just complete nightmare fuel and I really want to make it a thing for the learning mechanic. (Basically necro-hands.)

Ok, so basically you cut off people's hands, and they can do what they do best. A thief's hand coud Addams-Family style crawl across the floor, jump into someone's pocket, and steal their stuff, a warrior's hand could be good at cutting off people's hands and attaching themselves to take control of the body, and you could use a mage's hand to cast spells, like a scroll with multiple spells to choose from. There are only a few drawbacks. Thief hands will only follow your instructions 1d4 times, rolled by the Dungeon Master, and can try and trick you into letting it take some of your stuff. A warrior hand, after 2d4 attempts at a capture, will try to saw off your hand and take control of your body. Mage hands will always try to run, rolling sleight of hand (+4) every turn to try and squirm out, and will try and assist any rebelling warrior hands. If you do steal this, please give me credit... I worked *very* hard on this...

Going with the “ugly” bit of arcane ugly, I think there should be summoning, where you have to utilize monster parts to make a monster. The higher you roll, the better monster parts that your creature has. There would be a bunch of random bits and pieces, like a dragon wing and a panther leg are both added if you roll a ____. Just a suggestion.

Gosh, that way of handling how Magic comes to be is fantastic. The centre/deepest reaches of the earth being richer in magic because its "Closer to the Witches" is a brilliant jumping off point for fun lore bits! And the Potion system is stellar! Keyword based potionmaking is a fantastic leap away from the rigid magic casting/potion making that something like DnD has, and I love it! Can't wait for a proper release of this baby!

Maybe add a way to get bonuses on your study checks if you do something relevant to it while adventuring? Like if you're writing on Dragonology, you could get bonuses for digging up ancient dragon bones, interviewing dragons, helping out an NPC who is an expert in the field, doing something horrible and magic to dragon eggs, etc. etc. which you take back and use for your studies. Would be nice to give players some agency and extra connecting motivation. Would also help unlucky players finish their project if they work at it!

I had an idea kind of like the giant witches, in the sense that the lower in the earth you go dungeon-wise, the more strange things get. My explanation was that the world people know is a crust sitting atop the primordial chaos, from which all things in the material world arose at the beginning of time. The chaos is still down there, and its influence is more apparent the closer you get to it.

as the charecters (sorry i just cant spell that) are drawing based, i suggest a new feature: mutation. So its basically a thing that happens when a specific type of magic (nurgle-ish magic, like some sort of monster-summoning, stink/smell spells, groce kinda stuff) is casted. When you cast that kind of magic, you will roll a D6 if you will mutate. The risc of mutation is something about how strong the magic is. If you mutate, you will have to do something like ''draw an extra arm'' or something wich can be both good and bad. But thats just a suggestion, also i love your work, you are my favorite youtuber. I found you through some terrain tutorial :)

I cannot express how dope this is. A problem I find a lot in most RPGs is that the world can feel almost too enticing, too mystical NOT to explore. It really makes it hard for me to justify why someone WOULDN'T go adventuring, it can be dangerous sure, but unless you're actively diving into the unknown, an adventurer is always gonna be in their wheelhouse. On the other side of the coin, a world might be too dangerous, too grim, too horrifying to justify anyone exploring it simply because of the sheer vile nature of the world. With Arcane Ugly, I don't see this problem. By making every aspect of the world colorfully creepy, you make a world that is both enticing and alluring, yet somehow repulsive and cruel at the same time, which is a really hard balance to strike! I prolly didn't articulate my point well but this is just one of many reasons why I love this whole thing.

(Avatar library episode is what keeps poppin in my head.) But anyway, i feel like this could spawn classic cultists and mage hunters that kill wizards and offer their books up to the almighty. And also, absolutely excellent name for those creatures. "The dreadful." Just gets you psyched doesnt it? Fantastic work mate. Looking forward to thr future.

Hey Trent, you mention Lev Grossman in this video. I would love a video where you give book recommendations for art or inspiration. Learning what books that creative people are reading is one of my favourite things, and I'm probably not the only one!

After half of the video I realised, that I am totally fascinated, how you are doing your art ... and I totally forgot, what you are telling about. It tollay calms me down. So thank you for this cool new video! (Now, I have to watch it again and this time, I will listen ^^)

Okay seriously, please finish this project. Don't finish it soon or anything, i don't want you to rush it, but please follow it all the way through. As a DM I love this concept and I will be paying very close attention to this project and buying the hell out of it when it comes out. I already have a ton of ideas for what I could do with this and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

for the magic book making system you should be able to upgrade it overtime by maybe adding new spells or having it absorb something magical and getting stronger in general
