How To Play D&D WITHOUT a Dungeon Master

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Dungeons & Dragons needs a Gamesmaster and I'm gonna fix that...maybe idk. I haven't playtested this lol.

The thing that I do as DM is I pace the game. All the information we need is concisely communicated at the start, after that I read the room to try to see who's engaged and who needs pulled to the front of the game, like picking a player to lead in a social conflict or an investigation. Fights drag on too long and I educate players and look for shortcuts and set time limits on deliberation. If we need to speed up I speed things up, slow things down and take a RP moment between fights, or increase challenge and reward so that we end on a high note and a hook at the end of the session. That, and the DM can cheat, not meaning things like fudging dice rolls, but more like if a group is stuck the DM can change a puzzle or encounter and make it look like it was always supposed to be that way, or require more or less rolls to make sure a plan of action fails or succeeds. I don't like the idea of a game not needing a DM, but I do think it's possible. If the mechanic weren't a deck of cards that produced random results, but instead increased and decreased difficulty in a semi-random way that was attached to how long the group has been playing that session I do think games can run fine with players sharing the other jobs the DM has.

Tip for anyone wanting an easier way to make cards (from a homeschooling dad who makes a lot of decks of cards for learning resources) - buy card sleeves like people use for MTG or other collectable cards - print to fit the sleeves or get sleeves to fit your prints - just print on ordinary paper, but only print on one side (use one piece of paper for the front and one for the back so the designs don't show through) The cards might not be as nice but it is much quicker and great for prototyping games as you can swap out the paper and re-use the sleeves . PS - thank you Miscast for this. I love these cards. I'm a sucker for cards with enigmatic stuff on them, I have a collection of odd decks of playing cards and tarot.

I’ve been playing D&D for 20+ years. I followed your channel after seeing your collab with Bill Making Stuff, so this video was an unexpected delight. That is some of the coolest fantasy artwork I’ve seen, and the effect after you weathered them looked great. Thanks for this, can’t wait to download and take a proper look

I really admire your creative energy. I'm always getting stuck at the planning phase and then my projects just marinade in my head for all eternity but you manage to keep the momentum going. The concept is pretty interesting and I, and probably many others, would really like to see you do a playtest of this concept one day because it'd be cool to see how it could actually work out. Honestly I'm super sceptical but maybe it could be a great way to play.

Really great to see you work! The passion for tactile development is so lovely to watch Just to say that there are many games that do Solo/GM-less RPG and Solo Miniatures Gaming that I think you might want to check out: Microscope/Kingdom - for gm-less worldbuilding, microscope is about creating a shared history where everyone has equal power to affect the saga, Kingdom has players take on specific responsibilities much like your design - would be worth a look! Rangers of Shadowdeep - a solo/coop miniatures adventure game, kinda like mordheim, players command small bands of Rangers to take on Evil, based on the Frostgrave/Stargrave system. Would be worth looking at for coop/gm-less miniature gaming! There are many other games but those two stuck out to me as ones you could take the most from for what you seem to be looking to create 😊

As always great video. One thing I've found when cutting cards is cutting the sides first and then cutting everything in center last can help prevent the images from being skewed and help to ensure everything turns out the same size. However I use a machine to cut so it may different by hand. As always your stuff looks great, keep up the wonderful work.

Having made cards this way before, it is WAY easier to print the front & back on the same sheet with the matching edges touching on one side and the images inverted. Then you can fold along the separation line, spray glue the inside of the fold, and shove the card stock into the seam. Voila, perfectly aligned sides, and as an added bonus you only need to cut three sides instead of all four.

The old Warhammer Quest had rules for DM-less play. The dungeon tiles were auto-generated by cards, encounters randomly-generated. Monsters behaved in a set way based on their circumstances, so no player had to make creative decisions in favor of the enemy. It was great to run some of these between the normal narrative module style sessions to give the players a chance to catch up on loot and levels for later campaign stages. Also fixed the aforementioned problem with 'casual' dungeon-crawler games, that 'No one wants to DM, so we don't feel like playing.'

This was super interesting! Back in high school me and some friends decided to run a Spelljammer/Planescape-esque campaign using my own ruleset, but the kick was we all took part in the worldbuilding and GM'ing over the course of the campaign. After that group split up I ended up coming up with the RPG I'm currently designing and I think I owe a lot to that. That hodge-podge aesthetic of all your favorite things is truly in my opinion the best way to start designing. Really inspiring to see channels like yours that help popularize that! Cause who says you gotta stick to one game and world to get inspiration? Beautiful work m8 :)

Cards are a great addition to any game player/GM's arsenal. They're a self-contained bit of randomness, as unlike dice you're not cross-referencing the results with a separate table. If you're making the cards, you can put everything you need on the card. Information, numbers, modifiers, and sweet, sweet artwork. You and your collaborators have done some good work right here.
