I actually feel sorry for her. She's frustrated that their relationship is not going anywhere ...AFTER 15 YEARS! 😲 And he even cheated on her. If he didn't love her anymore, why he didn't break up with her for good? He just made the two of them waste time ...

The creators said it exactly that the show isn't just black and white. That there is no exact villain to all the problems. That when you fix that one thing you thought is what was bothering you won't make everything better. And I like it the way it is because despite the show focusing on comedy & musical, its not so one dimensional unlike the other copy & paste shows.

when Josh started to turn the situation around to make himself the victim, I started to wonder if he was exhibiting signs of an emotional abuser. he cheats on Valencia, treats proposing like a gruelling chore, and yells at her for wanting to escalate their relationship, and still makes her feel like SHE'S the one who needs to apologise.

Exactly!! You're absolutely right. I think his mother who pampered him till 30 helped him grow this idea that he's so special and was looking for a next "mom".. And then he actually did the same to Rebecca: He took advantage of her obvious obsession with him, used her for the house and sex.. Then when jealous and insecure he proposed but did nothing for the wedding and also stood her up with no notice at all. And after traumatizing Rebecca so much, leading her to spiralling, he told her she's a dangerous person and that he wants her to stay away from him for ever... and when she did better, he approached her, became her roomare and again decided he wanted her back.. I mean come ooon :PPP But in the end I'm glad they showed that he started therapy and became self aware and a better person :)

I mean that's not abuse. You could JUST as easily argue that Valencia abused josh by belittling everything he does. Nobody abused anyone. Josh is a man child not ready for an adult relationship and didn't WANT one with Valencia. Valencia was with Josh because of the idea of him instead of who he actually was and therefor looked down and belittled even the harmless things that made Josh, Josh. They were bad for each other. In season 1 I really don't think you can blame either over the other. Valencia just grew way more from the break up than Josh. So afterwards, I would def give it to Valencia as Josh learned literally 0.0 from their break up and only reverted in maturity.

That is because the problem is her… Valencia wants him to “grow up” and therefore he always kept her at arms length. Rebecca made him question his purpose in life, made him passionate about newer prospects… he even willingly proposed to her. Even though he ran away after getting hits of her true insanity… but it shows the difference between the two.

Josh wasn't mature enough for a relationship. Whether it was with Valencia, Rebecca, whoever... I think the point of his storylines later on was that he attached himself to people so fast that he never really worked out who he was or what he wanted in life. In a way, it's actually kind of similar to the way Rebecca was thinking: that a relationship would just make everything fall perfectly into place.

Valencia was probably one of the most grounded characters in this season (and the show tbh). She had every right to be upset the whole season, Rebecca came from new york just to ruin her relationship of 15 years. She had every right to be defensive and not like her. She stuck with Josh through everything, even when he admitted to kissing rebecca, she didn’t want to lose him. Valencia has issues of course, but damn imagine being with someone you love for 15 years and not getting anywhere. At this point, Josh was falling away from her. That’s heartbreaking for Valencia or anyone for that matter. If you put yourself in her shoes, you really empathize with her whole struggle :(

Valencia is an unsung hero. Remember that in season 2, she gives her own dream wedding for Rebecca and Josh. This girl has been through the ringer.

The fact that she didn't blame Rebecca and stay mad at her for the end of their relationship makes her sane and a good person.

Valencia was by no means perfect, but she gave Josh more than his fair share of time to become comfortable and want to ask her to marry him. But 15 years is a ridiculous amount of time to keep a person you supposedly love waiting.

Yeah and he is trying to make it seem like it's Vi's fault when he's a man child, who's not ready to face his fears and just tell his "highschool sweetheart" that he's not going to give her an engagement ring, let alone marry her. Not now not ever. And he didn't even have the decency to break up with her, she took the responsibility again. At least they both found themselves after the break up

After watching all four seasons. The fact that Valencia could have picked father brah over josh. Brah never got the letter she sent. Shows how much hurt josh put on her. She could have moved on years ago and yet she waisted so much time waiting around for josh to commit to her. Yes she technically cheated too, but realtionship was begining to run it's course when they were in high school or she wouldn't have connected with brah and josh probably already have had cheated on her with rebecca. Circumstances made her end up with josh even though she had a better option. Yet josh kind led to beleive that the relationship was gonna possibly go somewhere, especially since he moved back to west covina for Valencia yet he blantely flirts with Rebecca. Brah became a presit and he was no longer an option. I just love Valencia in this scene she is fed up and finally standing up for her self after josh dragged the relationship for so long. But she found better with Beth.

The song about women she did and freaking out about Rebecca kissing her made sense for a internalized homophobia subplot but her relationship with Beth felt somewhat superficial to me. Well, at the end of the day it's Rebecca's show not Valencia's lol.

That letter gave this scene more depth, the fact that she stayed and not choose the one she loved.

I love how this show perfectly develops the storyline while showcasing both Rebecca’s point of view of the characters and the reality of the characters at the same time

It's a toxic relationship.

I've said a billion times in season 1: Josh is no prize.

Josh doesn’t deserve any of the women in this show.

damn, I feel bad for both of them... I understand why valencia is so frustraited, but I also see how much pressure she is putting on josh on a daily basis... they where just not right for each other.

I liked Josh up till this scene and he turned out to be such a whiney man child, ugh

Honestly, when you get to a point where an ultimate is being issues to get an engagement. . .it might be too late. Poor Valencia. She knew it too. I remember when I first watched this, I was distracted by thinking there's nothing wrong with not wanting to get engaged at someone else's wedding and pull attention from what's supposed to be another couple's big night, but on the rewatch, I can see that I was focusing on the wrong thing. You can hear Valencia's heart breaking here, and it's because she already knew this relationship she'd invested so much time in, clung to after her last real love connection seemingly rejected her, was a bust. This last desperate attempt to secure a proposal was just a product of her not wanting to admit it.

In fairness...the "15" years part while valid also is counting since they were 13 years old. Valencia and Josh are is 26-27 years old at this point. While her point still stands, It's not like she is 37 and had been with him since she was 23.

Valencia has been with Josh for 15 years and she loves him so much that she’s ready to marry the man of her dreams; so obviously she thinks he wants to do the same and he did say he was going to propose. I really sympathize with her and think she has the right to question him, although I wouldn’t have probably asked his tita for the family ring but I understand her pain and frustration. That coming from someone who’s pretty much like Valencia in her own way except for the mean girl part...

Brad Watkins You have to suspend some disbelief about ages in this show. For instance, is it believable that Rebecca is 26 and has finished Yale undergrad, Harvard law, and been offered a job as junior partner at a large New York firm?

People usually enter high school around age 14, so they'd be around 29, no? Pushing 30 and still not married to your high school sweetheart. Not that I advocate getting married young, but that's definitely a red flag in the relationship

You know you're not wrong. Counting the time before they were actually adults isn't really fair. So let's take it from when they were 20 and say that's what counts. That's still eight years where they were dating but Josh has been hesitant to take the next step. People usually get engaged after about two years of dating. Valencia has been waiting a long time for Josh to be ready and I can completely see how she's frustrated with him not committing

He does't get points for her not listening to him. He is stuck in his Bubble-rut, he doesn't have anything new to say. --Things are good now. I don't want things to change. I need TIME.--- She made the mistake of staying with something that wasn't working, but what he did was worse. Because he wouldn't let any action/catalyst occur for change to occur.

I really like that the show doesn't explicitly make this anyone's fault. It's just two people who didn't fit and were really bad for each other. Valencia was a fairly controlling bitchy girlfriend to Josh and his friends and Josh was always acting like he had one foot out the door and refused to commit to his relationship with Valencia. Neither of them feel seen in the relationship and it's caused the whole thing to deteriorate

Je le vois différemment. Valencia pense que l'ultimatum est quelque-chose qui se fait et si ça n'a pas marché avec Josh, c'est que le problème vient de Josh, pas de l'ultimatum. Il est donc logique qu'elle refasse la même erreur avec Beth.

The way before even kissing Josh hung out with Rebecca consistently even though it was very clear that it was not ok with V and then that Josh found Rebecca attractive and still continued to hang out with her

It’s difficult to judge this without some context: both these people are messed up. Valencia was always a bully. None of Josh’s friends liked her, none of his family liked her. They all wanted Josh to get rid of Valencia already, but she used sex to control him and bully him into continuing to be with her. He was never happy with the relationship but she literally didn’t allow him to break up with her. True, Josh is an overgrown man-baby and a coward, but it really was Valencia’s own fault for holding on to Josh for 15 years trying to force him to be what he clearly never wanted. Rebecca despite her major issues actually cared about Josh and his feelings and made Josh realize just how miserable and dysfunctional his relationship with Valencia is. No one is the victim here, they’ll all neurotic jerks.

Not a lesbian, in the episode with father brah heather even mentions her "sexual fluidity". She's probably bisexual or pan or maybe even abro. There IS something to be said about the way she freaked out about Rebecca kissing her in season 1 but you can argue that was just internalized homophobia and/or misogyny
