The saddest thing? Rebecca is not entirely wrong. Valencia was more in love with her idea of a wedding happening than Josh. Heather did stay in school because she was afraid to actually be an adult. Darryl is denying he and WhiJo are ultimately incompatible. And Paula was an enabler as I ever saw one. Except Rebecca is not saying these truths as a friend. She is saying it because she's trapped and cornered and doesn't want to be confronted with her own issues. She just wants to hurt these people, because in her mind, they are now the enemy, even if they are trying their best to actually help her.

I feel for everyone in this scene. Rebecca is splitting, she thinks her friends are about to reject her so she's lashing out and rejecting them first so the abandonment won't hurt, but you can see how uncomfortable she is after every mean thing she says.

Exactly. The idea behind the musical numbers in the show is that they aid in Rebecca’s escape from reality. It’s easier for her to deal with her life if she sees it through the lenses of her childhood musicals, where life is full of romantic clichés and the princess always finds her prince. By contrast, in this scene that mask has finally fallen off, and Rebecca is being forced by her friends to deal with her life head-on. There are no storybook endings, no musical transitions to protect her anymore. When Nathaniel (her prince) fails to sweep her away, it is the last straw, and she finally spirals out of control.
As someone with autism, this whole scene is so familiar to me. It's been years since I had a meltdown, especially one like this, but when you're in so much pain, you have this monstrous need to cause others pain. It's kind of like taking a chunk of your own pain and then flinging it at someone else. So temporarily you're in less pain, but eventually the guilt hits and the pain is even worse than it was before. I've learned how to manage my anger and frustration but I used to do this. It's awful. I had no control over my words, my pain, and my anger.

Watching this scene for the first time made me cringe because it reminded me of myself and how I'd destroyed relationships in my life. You can see she regrets it the moment she says it. Rachel's acting is outstanding.
I gotta say Nathaniel handled this whole situation really well. Man had exactly zero context for any of this but he could read the room well enough to know that despite what he might want, it definitely wasn't the right moment for him to carry Rebecca off to Rome. His reaction was also incredibly measured for someone who's being accused of things he has no context for
This entire scene kills me but Pete’s facial expressions after being yelled at is particularly devastating.
Honestly this is very accurate with BPD - I’ve turned on people I love when feeling afraid. The guilt after is intense
I will never be able to deal with this scene.
Imagine coming to this without contex yet still feeling for the characters anywayyyy
Am I the only one who thinks this was wrong of Paula to do this? She literally got everyone involved in Rebecca's personal shit. She couldn't have at least done this one on one? I think it was a misstep, but a very well intentioned one. She wanted as many people as possible there so remind Rebecca that she was loved, so they could try to convince her to get help. It’s really just an example of how society doesn’t know how to handle these struggles and when it comes to it, we make mistakes trying to help people.
@ashleyguthrie572

Yeah it's no wonder Rebecca lashed out. This wasn't the right way to approach things. She probably thought she was helping but just put Rebecca on the spot, broke her trust, invaded her privacy, and ultimately scared her. That said, a lot of this show is people (especially Rebecca) mishandling things and being morally shady without thinking too hard about it or even with good intentions.

It may be "wrong" in hindsight but this is what makes the show human. None of them are perfect and Paula was doing what she felt was right at the time.
I love how awkward this scene feels, it's so accurate
This scene is devastating to me because I have lived it. I have been Rebecca in this scene and it is crushing. I still can't get through it without crying.
Dealing with borderline loved ones is very challenging, sometimes you have to take a step back so you won’t get hurt or mistreated. But once they start the treatment for real, things get so much better
Ok I remember watching this scene on air and it resonating. Deeply related to rebecca. Now, years later, coming and watching just this scene, I'm in Nathaniel'd shoes....they really are trying to be nice. Fascinating.
It's weird when you have a moment like this and then you watch this scene and you're just sitting here watching how you look from the outside😳
That scène is why i think this show rocked
I mean. They probably could’ve done it in a more compassionate way than all of them in a group holding the packet in her face tho?
That's so typical bpd stuff, lashing out and all.
This is top notch acting. You can see Rebecca’s expressions for a second in between her hateful rants, and she’s so incredibly sad. She hated every second of this.
Lived this so many times ......
I really didn't see how that could help at all. If someone did that to me I'd distance myself for ages if not cut ties. You don't just think you understand someone's entire past plus their reaction made things way worse for it should have been more Suttle. But I guess it shows how they didn't understand.
They should’ve held her responsible for this. Not punished her or yelled at her or withheld their friendship. They should have just gently let her know that she hurt them after she came back from the hospital. Accountability is important in healthy relationships.
@NovaLaMason

I agree, but also disagree, because she actually had a point with everyone. She MAY have been incorrect with Valencia, but the possibility of her valid interpretation still exists. Valencia DID push her dream wedding ideas onto someone else. Heather DID stay in school because she was scared of growing up and going out into the world. Darryl DID drive WhiJo away with his pressure of having a baby. Paula DID make Rebecca worse with her schemes forged by her own escapism. She hurt them, yes, but she also didn't say anything that they DIDN'T NEED to hear.

not in a mean way-- yes you should be concerned. This scene is a well-crafted illustration of a mental breakdown. Rebecca in this scene was 1. displaying manic avoidant behavior by running away with Nathaniel to run from her problems & feelings (which is also disrespectful to Nathaniel to use him as a prop instead of a person) 2. Rebecca is so in her feelings she's misinterpreting everything her concerned loved ones say as an attack 3. to avoid what her loved ones are saying about how worried they are about her & how her behavior is damaging other people, Rebecca lashes out to a severe degree to deliberately push them away so she doesn't have to face her feelings or actions. I'm not sure how much of the rest of the show you've seen for context, but this scene is a good illustration of unchecked & untreated BPD.
I just realized I do this a lot. I know they are not wrong but I also want to hurt them because I felt so hurt inside. Now I just try to cope by not even talking at all whenever I feel. It felt like my body is burning, only self harm reduce it. Not even help much

Bpd: you’re better at psychology than anybody around you.
What I don't get is, if Rebecca burned her ex's house back in college and then went to a sanatorium, why do they want her to get help now? Why are they so concerned about something she did many years ago and allegedly already got help for? Yes, she is borderline and never got real help but they didn't known that at this point of the story, and Paula also had her fair share of craziness, so why is she so surprised? And it was actually this "intervention" that ended up leading her to suicide by thinking everyone wanted to lock her in a sanatorium again.
@nikkimirhosseyni9535

Carlos Valdez she was spiraling again and the file showed a pattern. They were scared of her ending up in the same place. Her suicide attempt was the result of many compiled events and her untreated disorder. The triggering event, though, was her mother secretly drugging her with anti-anxiety pills and then when she got caught, telling Rebecca she was a disappointment and a failure.

Mental health issues are never a straight road. They all have peaks and valleys, and people know that. They aren’t going to look at the past and just go “well she’s definitely OK now bc she’s been treated!” especially when patterns are clearly re-emerging. And it’s a contributor but not the cause of her suicide attempt, which the characters couldn’t prevent bc they weren’t aware yet just how deeply it ran.
Hot take: While Rebecca absolutely crosses a line with her cruelty in the way she lashes out, her friends, and especially Paula, are utterly tactless and in the wrong about the way they decided to tackle an extremely delicate situation. Such to the point that I can't even feel that sorry for them. It's like watching people recklessly kick a hornet's nest and being surprised that they're stung. I think the show fails to properly acknowledge just how humiliating, counterproductive, and plain condescending it feels to take someone whose spiraling, gather a group of their friends, bring out their darkest secret, and expect ANYTHING good to come about from it.
