Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Dream Sequence from Series Finale

Фильм және анимация

Rebecca learns that she cannot rely on someone else to make her happy through a dream sequence drawing on the classic trope of viewing future versions of ones self through a supernatural source.

She could have been happy with any of these guys, but none of these guys would have *made* her happy. And if she defined her happiness solely by "ending up" with a guy, she would have ultimately been left unhappy without them, and without the tools to find internal joy and fulfilment.

Stupid thing to take away from this scene, maybe, but I like that it refutes the idea of a "soul mate", which Rebecca seemed convinced she and Josh were at one point. Instead, there are multiple people with whom she could have a fulfilling, loving relationship. And even then, it won't matter if she won't address her own issues and clings to these relationships as her sense of identity or primary source of happiness.

In case you had trouble keeping up, it's not that anyone there will make her unhappy, it's that none of them are the key to her happiness. Brilliant finale and it's something that's been reinforced since season 1. Heck, since episode 1, I'd say. "This is what happy feels like, right?"

Not sure if it was intentional, but I love the varying symbolism you can see behind each relationship if all these flashbacks were to be taken at one set point in time. Rebecca and Greg: despite their time apart, Rebecca sees them as the couple who would take things slow, finally getting married once Greg mulls it over and asks her. Rebecca and Nathaniel would move a little faster with marriage, pregnancy soon following after, with Nathaniel seemingly the “breadwinner” while Rebecca stays at home, nesting (hence her finding the plush toy, while shopping and preparing for their baby). And finally, Rebecca and Josh - they had been circling around each other for so long, history from as long as their teen years, that they’d immediately throw themselves into marriage and have two kids already at this point, handling the field trips and the PTA meetings. Again, it’s probs not that deep but that’s how my CXG-loving mind sees it 😅❤️

I like that they reinforced the fact that none of them would be the key to her happiness, but I wish she could have had a long term relationship with Greg or Nathaniel. It’s just sad because the fact that whenever she saw a future she was like ‘of course it’s him’ implies it isn’t any of them, which isn’t my typical ‘happy ending’ 😂

That’s the point. This whole show was never building towards the typical. We got the right ending. Rebecca taking the time to work on herself before considering a relationship at all. It’s the realistic choice. There were no fireworks, and it might feel anticlimactic, but... that’s life. Life is anticlimactic. “Real life isn’t a movie.”

  • @hkazu63

It isn’t any of them, because its not about finding the soulmate. Any of the three could theoretically give her a happy, fulfilling relationship - even Josh could. It could be someone else completely. But nothing will make her happy and fulfilled until she can do that for herself and realise who she is. Thats the best part of it. You can believe that whatever you wanted to happen eventually did, but the main focus is that Rebecca must choose herself, before she actually chooses a man.

You’re missing the point a little, though. It doesn’t matter who she ends up with; Greg, Nathaniel, and Josh are all wonderful for her. We see that in the dream, all the lives turn out great. But Rebecca will only truly be happy if she is her own person, doing what she loves. Who she ends up with shouldn’t define her, and it shouldn’t matter to us. What the show is trying to tell us is that romantic love is not an end all, fix all. Rebecca believed this at the beginning and it only caused misery. Self-love is what is truly important in life.

I LOVE Greg but he deserves better. She and Nathaniel just ... Fit. They understand each other. Greg and her had good moments but they don't understand each other most of the time. They're bad for each other. And for anyone who thinks shipping her with someone goes against the show, you have a one track mind. The show isn't anti relationship; it's anti making your selfworth depend on a relationship. Rebecca and Nathaniel, once they have happiness with just themselves, belong together. They just do. Greg and Josh both had a pattern of being into Rebecca when she was in a good place but peeling away when she was at her low points. That's not what you need from a partner. Nathaniel saw her at her absolute worst and still loved her even when she was in a terrible place. Besides, Greg belongs with me. Lol

The Finale throws some strong-ish inclination towards Greg, he's the only one she doesn't properly reject, the scenes with him are completely different from those with Nathaniel or Josh, and there's WhiJo's comment on not feeling safe until "either one of them is married" But that's not the point, they didn't want to and definitely won't confirm who it was, because it undermines the actual point behind the finale.

The show depicted over and over again that no one was the true person she should be with. Hell, the ending was deliberately open-ended so the audience decides. Saying that Greg was the right choice all along is completely misses the point because there is no right choice in choosing. Greg being the first one shown doesn't mean anything if the future still depicted her as being unhappy without figuring out who she is.

Men are conditioned to believe that making money and achieving status will make them happy and that as men they are entitled to sex whenever they want with whoever because that's what women are "for". Women are conditioned to believe that they have no social standing in society without a man with money and status to legitimize her worth and be perceived as a woman with highly sought after sexual value. She is taught to do all things in life with the aim to position herself for a potential high quality suitor to "notice" and "pick" her by remaining in shape, seek higher education, maintain a career that is eye catching but humble so it doesn't put off men from pursuing her, remaining youthful, remaining virgin yet knowledgeable of how to please a man's needs perfectly while also allowing him endless amounts of space to spend copious amounts of male to male bonding time and status boosting activities to glorify himself at her expense as she gracefully and demurely takes it all in stride as he is sowing his wild oats outside the relationship with a random assortment of short terms flings with other women while she is expected to keep sweet and loyal and keep a perfectly sound mind about the whole ordeal. And she is supposed to "just get over it" if he abandons her after her years of thankless service and devotion to him. He is not expected to have any remorse for his actions, he is celebrated for switching her out for a "newer younger model" every few years to keep up appearances with his equally status obsessed peers. She is expected to accept her lot in life as the "used car with the mileage racked up" and put out to pasture from society, out of sight out of mind. And not lose her mind but "be the bigger person" by letting him go galavanting off to the next woman and all his misogynistic buddies and brosephs like she never existed even though he told her he loved her and she believed him at first.

I know this is a fictional show but this is selling a lie to most women. What are you supposed to do after 45? You will always be replaceable in a job but you wont be in your family. Even if you sleep around and not marry, you will be as confused as you started and most likely more traumatized from all the failed relationships. You think she really has these options? Most average 30 plus women are finding it hard to settle down after sleeping around in their 20s and that's the truth.

This isn’t a general advice to all women, it’s advice for Rebecca specifically. She INDIVIDUALLY wouldn’t be happy in these relationships because there’s a part of her identity that needs healing outside of a relationship. Also this comment is kind of begging the question? Like the main thesis of this video is that happiness is not automatically found because you’re married, and you’re talking about how unrealistic it is for anyone past her age to get married. Like okay? That isn’t the point. Is every single woman who married young happy? Is every single woman who is single in their 40s happy? Of course not! Some are happy some are not, just like literally every group of people. The point of this clip and the show as a whole is that Rebecca as an individual has trouble finding meaning in her life outside of love and external perception and needs to learn to be human while not chasing after love as a panacea to all her problems. It’s irresponsible to expect one fellow flawed human being to heal all your traumas and hang ups, she needed to do some work on her own as well. Will she ever get married? Who knows, that isn’t the point of the show. But I do feel as though you’re being intentionally cynical here. People get married well into their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and on and on till they croak. Love doesn’t need a timeline or to work out the way it does for everyone else. Being human is a journey, and while it can include have 2.5 kids at age 25 and living in a house with a white picket fence with a breadwinner husband, it doesn’t have to. And that’s okay.

You don't need a relationship to be happy, because families can be nontraditional. In many countries, single women can adopt children. And some people just need friends, or to marry later in life- there's whole dating apps *only* for people above 45.
