I honestly can't blame Valencia for acting the way she did in season 1 - she had been with Josh for forever, but Josh wasn't committing to her even though they'd been together since they were teenagers, and Rebecca clearly was overstepping boundaries. Then Josh cheated on her with Rebecca, making Valencia want to just hurry up and lock him down with marriage. Neither of them were good for each other, and I'm so glad she was able to get out of her and Josh's relationship and end up with Beth while still staying good friends with Rebecca and Josh :)

Valencia was the "villian" of season one but I'm glad the show let her develop and grow. Also when I first moved to California I lived in Valencia lol.

Lmao... I was watching the show for the first time with my sister and as soon as she heard Valencia and Josh were high school sweethearts she was like, "ohhh."

All the way through the seasons I was like "why don't YOU propose?????" When she finally went "I can propose???? :D" I was like "YES GIRL"

@@idontneedaname318 I think it was a mixture of hang-ups from her past with Josh (even if she got over it, she was probably scared deep down that it would happen again) and also, because men are expected to propose, she gave Beth (who at least appears more ‘masculine’) the job of proposing. Beth isn’t really a big character outside of her relationship to Valencia, so perhaps the writers were trying to make a point on gender roles regarding same-gender relationships?? Don’t quote me on that though

Rewatching the show is so great because we see how Josh was actually very immature and treated Valencia poorly, we just saw everything through Rebeccas eyes which made Valencia seem crazy and Josh seem like an angel.

I think we also find out that Valentia couldn’t grow up until she got out of a high school relationship that wasn’t quite right for her and maybe was making her a little crazy because she was refusing to see that. Josh’s refusal to move on from their school days was bending Valentia out of shape because it was making her less than the person she could be

That's actually one of the few I don't like about the show. Watching it again Josh was a HORRIBLE person, but somehow it wasn't really addressed, at least to the level it should've been. It was always dismissed because of Rebecca's horrible actions.

JDQGames I just finished the show for the first time and throughout the ENTIRE show I thought Josh was the worst. He DID lead Rebecca on A LOT throughout season 1, season 2 he was immature and playing with her feelings, and then by the third and fourth seasons I was surprised he was still a love interest for her. They could have given him A L O T more development

Valencia became such a great friend. I mean I honestly didn’t blame her for being ticked off and insecure about Rebecca bc she had reasons to, but I’m glad they got over it

I love how shocked she was when she realized she could propose 😂😂 it's clear that the thought had never crossed her mind and it made her so extatic 😂 love it love it love it

I truly love how the show approached her dealing with heteronormative concepts of gender and stuff via it. It was so refreshing and made me just sooooo happy

Aw she talked about not being funny so when she met her girlfriend it was so perfect 😭

So everyone talks about how Valencia didn't have her "I'm getting bi" reprise, but I totally see her moment of bi-panic at 4:44. I also enjoy how she has her own reckoning with heteronormative expectations of gender and proposing to her girlfriend. Love!

I actually like it because they didnt have to make a big fuss about her sexuality, normalizing it. Would have been a nice reprise though.

@@hardcandy9880 that's what the showrunners said, they told Gabrielle that there wouldn't be a "song and dance" like Daryl had, and instead Valencia was more confident in her decision hence no reprise

I really wish Beth had gotten a bit more character development and that whole proposal situation wasn’t just “well I was wrong and at least I know I can propose now.” But V’s development as a whole was great.

She underwent such a positive transformation, I'm so proud of her

If you were to just see Valentia in her first episode and the last it would be bizarre but actually when you see all the developments in between it works

not only character development but the teased hair development is immense

The entire arc of this show is incredible, and for like EVERY character. That’s part of what makes this show so special.

You should have included Valencia's reaction when Josh told her he kissed Rebecca. That was a huge moment for her character.

The best thing about this is that she didn't suddenly get rid of her interests in being pretty, getting married and social media. She is still all of that, but from a much healthier place. I think this was a really nice message of acceptance, usually when it comes to characters like Valencia they do a whole transformation, but here they let her keep that part of herself.

From the beginning I thought Valencia was the funniest one of the entire show. She seemed like she was always studying old Dallas and Dynasty shows to get moves.

Valencia's arc and character development are a testament to both the incredible actress who played her, and the writers of this show. Bravo!

I feel like the actress who played her partner and her had zero chemistry and I was surprised they didn't get into the homophobia in the Latinx community. I feel like her relationship with her partner was weirdly rushed and was not given the necessary attention. They could have made it great but it was kind of bland.

I actually really like that they didn’t make it a big deal. Valencia’s an important character but she isn’t as present on screen as Rebecca or Paula are. I like that her and Beth happened as smoothly as Heather and Hector. I also like to think that Valencia has been out since before we even met her, remember that when Rebecca kissed her she was upset that her friend kissed her, not that a girl kissed her. It is so refreshing to see lgbt+ characters just be who they are without their identity being their whole storyline. Even Darryl who made a big deal about being bi had a very diverse storyline about many things and his sexuality was only one small thing. I do agree that I would have liked to see more of Beth for like at least one episode before they got together so I could connect with her character but I do like that there is zero homophobia in the show

You could say the same about Hector if you put it in perspective. But Valencia is a side character and I liked that there was never a big „oh no I’m bisexual, here let’s discuss homophobia“ moment for her. Also I’m pretty sure Rachel Bloom didn’t feel comfortable of discussing topics she might not have that much expertise in. She always stays in her lane what I really respect way more.

@@kenunot6106 Yes, it's such a rare term that I rarely see it. Just "Latinos" is enough (since it's a neutral term). I also don't think there's much homophobia in the US Latino community... they seem pretty cool about it. It's in our own countries where, despite having made great legal advances, there is a lot of discrimination, hatred and rejection towards members of the LGBT+ community (as in most countries, sadly).

I always felt like Rebecca and Valencia had insane chemistry, so I was not surprised when she started dating Beth. I like that the show doesn’t make a big deal about the whole coming out thing (except for Daryl maybe). WhiJo was gay since the very beginning and he said some wise stuff to Daryl when he was first asked about his sexuality.

The show was very fortunate that they developed their actors to really grow and developed from simple 2dimensional characters to more dynamic well rounded individuals.
