Don't Be A Lawyer
Starring Burl Moseley, Clark Moore
Written by Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, & Adam Schlesinger
Jim:
TWENTY YEARS OLD, PRETTY SMART KID
DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WANTED TO DO
SO I TOOK THE LSAT AND THEN, JUST LIKE THAT
GOT ACCEPTED AT GLENDALE U
EVERYONE SAID IT WAS A REAL SAFE BET
A PRESTIGIOUS AND LUCRATIVE VOCATION
SO I SET OUT ON A JOURNEY TO BECOME AN ATTORNEY
WITHOUT A MOMENT’S HESITATION
BUT HERE’S SOME FREE ADVICE I’M GIVING
WHEN IT COMES TO DECIDING WHAT TO DO FOR A LIVING
DON’T BE A LAWYER!
DON’T DO IT, QUICKEST WAY TO RUIN YOUR LIFE
DON’T BE A LAWYER!
NOT WORTH IT, IT’LL LEAVE YOU DEAD INSIDE
THE JOB IS INHERENTLY CRAPPY
THAT’S WHY YOU’VE NEVER MET A LAWYER WHO’S HAPPY
IT’S A GUARANTEED SOUL DESTROYER
DON’T BE A LAWYER!
LAW SCHOOL DEBT, DAILY REGRET
IS THAT WHAT YOU DREAMED OF AS A KID?
OR DID YOU HOPE ONE DAY THAT YOU’D FIND A WAY
TO SPEND FOUR YEARS WORKING ON A
PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY’S MERGER WITH ANOTHER PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY?
YOUR ONLY EXPERTISE IS RUNNING UP FEES
SPEAKING LEGALESE LIKE A DICK
BUT IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO AVOID THIS FATE
FIND ANY OTHER JOB TO PICK
Jim & Students:
SURE, YOUR PARENTS MIGHT THINK YOU’RE A FAILURE
BUT NO ONE’S EVER SAID, “FIRST, LET’S KILL ALL THE TAILORS!”
DON’T BE A LAWYER!
Jim:
I’M SERIOUS
IT REALLY, REALLY SUCKS
DON’T BE A LAWYER
NO ONE YOU WORK WITH LOOKS LIKE ALLY MCBEAL
THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER PROFESSIONS
THAT DON’T TURN YOU INTO JEFF SESSIONS
JUST SAY NO TO THE LAWYER EMPLOYER (NO!)
DON’T BE A LAWYER!
AJ:
WHAT ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS LAW?
Jim:
NO MONEY
NO, NO MONEY
AJ:
ENVIRONMENTAL LAW?
Jim:
NO MONEY
EVEN LESS MONEY
AJ:
IMMIGRATION LAW?
Jim:
NO MONEY
PLUS IT’S A BUMMER
AJ:
OKAY...BUT WHAT IF, ONE DAY, YOU MAKE IT TO THE SUPREME COURT?
Jim:
IT’D BE GREAT TO BE ON THE SUPREME COURT
BUT YOU’LL NEVER BE ON THE SUPREME COURT
THERE’S TRULY NO CHANCE OF THAT HAPPENING!
Lawyer:
The preceding song in no way reflects the views of CBS and The CW network. Eh, screw it.
Jim:
SEE?
DON’T BE A LAWYER!

The only way to alter the supreme court is to get elected as president or a senator. There are literally hundreds other lawyers who think exactly the same as you, but the president and the senate are the ones who choose what kind of lawyer they want on the supreme court.

@@kennethkho7165 Along that same line of thinking, the truly best way a single person could affect policy is get appointed and then "switch sides" a la Souter (to an extent). Otherwise, in every job/position/appointment you take, your effect is only at the margin of what the person second-in-line for that position would have done.

I died laughing when they started in on the "no money" lawyer jobs because it's true. I'm one of the lucky ones with an awesome well-paying job in public interest, but I have a ton of friends who either wound up in soul-sucking jobs (because it is really competitive to get those no-money jobs) or they're living in a closet with five roommates. If you want to go into public interest lawyering, make sure you go to a law school with good public interest connections and a public interest loan repayment assistance program (basically a retroactive free ride). And get some work experience BEFORE law school. Don't just walk in the door the first day of law school and think, yeah, saving the world sounds cool. Public Interest law can be an amazing field, but getting a good job in it takes hard work, advanced planning, and some luck!

And I should clarify for folks that when I say "loan repayment assistance program," I'm not just talking about the highly problematic federal loan forgiveness program. These programs are NOT the same across all schools and prospective students should really research them!

I just took it again this summer. My mom always told me "I don't understand why you can't pass for NY. You're so smart." I can't tell her because I know it will break her heart, but part of my subconscious is saying that if I pass the bar to NY then I'll have to be an attorney. I'm still honestly on the fence. I do have a passing UBE and MPRE for Indiana and I can transfer there. I only have $3,500 of student loans left so if I do end up practicing it's because of the work--not because of the money. I think the student loans are a big reason why so many lawyers are miserable: they end up having to do a lot of work they don't want to do because they need to survive. They can' take that $55k job with a 35 hour work week and just watch sports and movies after work because they need to pay those big bills. Idk. Life is hard lol.

You should feel good! I was a lawyer for 5 years and I've just quit. It literally almost sucked the life out of me, I'd go as far as saying that most lawyers suffer from mental health issues/depression because of the INSANE hours you're required to do, and the extreme pressure/stress, all for something you HATE doing or, at best, mildly enjoy. Every lawyer I know is miserable, and we'd often gather in one of our colleagues' offices at 3am in the morning, while we were still working, and talk about how we wanted to quit and how much we hated our lives. But I'm the only one who had the balls to actually walk away. The money is good so people get mortgages, send their kids to private school etc. and then they have to keep working there to pay for their lifestyle. It's SO easy to get stuck and your whole life flashes and you have hated almost every second of it. So yeah, it's better to get out before even starting. And just know that if you pursue your dreams/passions and it all goes to shit, you can always go back to law school. It will always be there. (I don't recommend ever going back). Sorry for the rant.

There's no point having loads of money when you have no time to spend it and it doesn't increase the quality of your life because you are constantly in the office working.
