I clean my chicken house every week. My little chicks loved it.

Great tip about using the herbs. Peppermint deters mice and spiders too!

Definitely wear a mask for that job country girl.

Some people put down a tarp on the coop floor before the bedding so that they can pull the whole lot through the muck door without all that dusty shoveling.

I just cleaned mine after a year. The dust agitated my allergies! After removing everything, I pressure washed the inside, sprayed with dawn soap and water for fleas, covered everything in fine pine shavings. Smelled really good. Thank you for the tip on herbs in the coop! I had no idea! Since the coop was cleaned two days ago, I'll be adding herbs in tomorrow!

I totally agree with a previous comment about wearing a mask while doing this chore. All the dust almost made me sneeze ;-)

You forgot to ware a mask, you for sure inhaled all that dusty stuff.... 😷😷😷 👍🏼 Great job cleaning it.

I am so jealous! I'd love to have chickens, but not allowed here. I agree with the folks who think you should wear a dust mask while doing this kind if chore. You really shouldn't be breathing this. We all care so much about you and don't want you to be doing anything to jeopardize your health! This is the only thing I've ever seen you do that bothered me. Anyway, I think there is something so peaceful about getting an area ready for winter - kind of like putting a baby to bed for the night! LOL!

It was a great idea that Moose had to create a muck out door. The chickens seem to like their new bedding. I know what you mean about the ammonia smell, I remember that a schoolfriend lived on a chicken farm and the smell used to make me heave everytime I visited.

Thankfully you don't speak for me. I respect and honour this woman and know she has bountiful integrity. She knows how to protect her health at all times, if a mask was necessary she'd have used one. I give the woman credit for intelligence and common sense, esp as to her own health.

Ariel has been around birds her whole life. And is very health conscious. I’m sure she thought it through - mask/no mask. Though I will say it was also my first thought! Lol. Since practically every comment was about wearing a mask, I hope she gives her reasons. I learn so much from Ariel.

I seen where people put congolian down that they found on sale or in scrap or something and it just sweeps out nice and easy and sticks to it and they're done. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

I have a poop tray under the roosts filled with sawdust. I soft it daily like a litter box. I dump the poop in a trash can and have a separate compost pile for the poop and also add some to the raised beds to compost down over winter. Nice coop but please wear a mask.

Chickens are really good at making a mess. Yep! its a tough job, but it needed to be done. Multi uses for your show shovel. You could dig down a bit so that the wheel barrel and the sled will fit below the door. Good job Ariel.

A mask would be a good thing with all the dust.

You could see the dust and feathers "inside" as well, but not as heavily as when it was swept outside, but still there. Don't be rude and cruel to all of us who were just concerned for someone we care about.

As someone who was raised on a farm as well, with chickens, cows (dairy farm), sheep, ducks, geese, horses, pigs, rabbits and a goat, if my dad would have caught us mucking out the coop without a face covering (in those days it was either a bulky respirator that was used for any number of farming work, or a damp bandana), we'd have gotten our "hides tanned". As owners of a family farm, we didn't have medical insurance, and there were 5 kids in our family, and 3 cousin living with us. There was no spare money for anyone to get a respiratory illness, and there isn't a poop any dirtier or disease causing (to other farm animals as well) as chicken poop. COVER THEY MOUTH AND NOSE WHEN CLEANING UP AFTER ALL BIRDS!

We use deep litter we use a combo of wood chips and straw and some hay. We make it 1 foot deep when we put it in and it last a really long time. But we also have poop decks under the roosts and we layer those through out a month and clean those about once a month or every 6-8 weeks. We layer the poop deck every week when they fill up we clean then they are about 4-5 in deep it keeps the rest of the coop pretty clean. We also put fresh coop in the poop deck after we clean then we layer wood pellets and wood chips then a little flock fresh. Flock fresh bag last us all year

I thought the same thing. I have chickens and they are cleaned out every couple of weeks. I only have 3 whom free range. The dust isn't good for the birds either.

I honestly just like to hear you talk. You make stuff that I have no interest in......sound fascinating.

Great coop design! I would wear a mask when cleaning a chicken coop, I knew someone who suffered from Histoplasmosis, caused by cleaning out the chicken coop, not pleasant.

beautiful ending! is the bedding in the nest buckets also wood shavings! we are trying the deep litter method for the first time and I have to say its very dry and the chickens don't seem to like to scratch around in it to mix it, so Ive been forking it over myself. I may just take out the hay and use only wood chips. Dry in Montana here too.

Since four years now I use the deep litter method. In my opinion hemp is the best material for this, the chicken LOVES to turn it over, so I don't have to do it... As Ariel I add herbs of all kind: thyme (for disinfection and respiratory issues), rosemary (for disinfection), mint (no insects), lavender (disinfection). But you put in whatever herbs you have in your garden! And even after months it smells good!

Chicken poo dries out into dust pretty quickly. Add that to what I call chicken dust that comes off the birds, that adds up to a lot of dust.

Compost those browns…mmmm..

Gosh, I hope next time you wear a mask. All of that dander and dust is so bad for your lungs 😬

Wow -- super dusty! I sure would recommend wearing a mask for that job. Even though you are young and super healthy, that dust is so not good for your lungs. And dried chicken poop dust contains some serious pathogens. Specifically salmonella and campylobacter and histoplasmosis spores.

like in Histoplasmosis. Best to err on the side of safety at minimum, a respirator and eye goggles that can keep dust out..

Well, I did go search, " is it dangerous to clean out a chicken coop?" the answer was, "Yes". I hope you will be Ok even though you did not follow any health suggestions on how to clean out chicken coop. It seems it is just full of dangerous bacteria. Never wear clothes, boots, or gloves used in chicken barn into house etc. I think you keep your chickens very healthy and clean, yet I would research more about proper cleaning. Be safe.

I rewatched this video and still couldn’t see the fuss about a mask. There was barely any dust inside the coop and probably we saw more on camera than what Ariel experienced. Not to mention, she did not sneeze, nor hint at a tiny cough once. Besides, this is a grown woman managing a homestead, living harmoniously w plenty of big animals, doing so many things that we come to this channel to watch because we can’t/don’t do those things. Of course, she ha sense enough to wear a mask if her task called for it. Good grief. Leave comment that celebrates her intelligence, not insults it!

Seriously! Most of us watching has never set foot in a chicken coop. Not to mention, there was barely dust in the inside, beyond the scoop to lift each portion. I rewatched this video to see why so many commentators were nagging and showing “concern” and Ariel did not cough or sneeze once. Feel more like people who wanted to micromanage something finally. Honestly, I think a lot of the dust was just picked up on camera. Most of all, I hope she doesn’t read all of these annoying comments.

A mask and hair net would be nice to see on you.

All that powder, worry about you. You and kitty shouldnt be breathing it. I'd keep kitty away and wear mask and eye protection. Seriously the last thing I'd want you to get an infection from all that. Great compost though.

One more thing LOL i so protective of my chickens, I'd suggest turning the handles to the bottom on those buckets. They could fly off the top and get a leg stuck on side.

I would like to see you wear a mask or even a respirator when cleaning out the chicken barn. All of that dust, whether swirling around inside or outside, is not good for you to be inhaling. Parasitic illnesses can be transferred from the chickens and rodent feces in the barn, to you, through the dust being inhaled into your lungs. Also, I envy you not needing to wear a bra but you may want to wear a top with a higher neck when bending over in front of the camera.

Yet another gem from Fy Nyth! Great tip about the herbs. I cringed when I saw you scatter the tarragon, because I tried to grow tarragon once again this year from seed - with no luck! I can’t find starts here in Southern Oregon! Any tips on a good seed source? Sorry I strayed away from the chicken theme.. 😂🐔🪴
