***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

In my childhood the duck eggs were given to hens to hatch. It was funny watching those little ducklings in the pond and the mother hen running around, protesting and warning them.

Back in my youth (more than 50 years ago) one of my uncles raised Emden geese quite successfully and he had some simple 'golden rules' for hatching naturally: 1. Never let geese share a nest (instead make each individual nesting area as tight as possible). 2. Limit the the amount of eggs in every single nest to 8. As far as I remember (unfortunately I don't have exact numbers, but I'm convinced, that at least during my youth the goslings outnumbered the adult geese every single year), which implies, that he had a hatching rate above 50% with that method over many years, if not decades.

That t-post driver sure seems like a good investment every time I see you use it. Yes, you bought it due to back problems; and it would save folks from developing (as bad) back problems if they began with one in thier young years. The ease that you put in the t-posts outside of the silkie pen and speed/ time savings just seems like the cost of the t-post driver will be saved many times over during its life time.

Hey there kiddos. well I raised some Black Polish-White Crested Birds also. They are a lot friendlier than most birds. We actually named some. We could call one little rooster and he would come running. You have your Silkes & Cested together. To keep blood line strait you will have to separate them for a peroid of time-then you can mix them back together. If you do not your eggs will have mixed variety when sitting time comes around. When sitting time came around I always had some mixed Bantam hens. They want to sit they do not care. I actually put some mallard duck eggs under her and she hatched them out. It looked funny ducks following the chicken around. We had a pool. When ducks got in the water mama got pretty upset. Oh Well have a wonderful day. I love you. Dewayne Willis

We have our quail in a small A-frame coop on an 8'x4' 30" high raised bed. There are 10 female, 2 male in that space and egg collection is easy to just reach in ( I use a grabber stick to dig around and collect them) without bending over or worrying about stepping on them. Another benefit of being on the raised bed in a smaller coop is it's shorter so they don't get the momentum to jump up and break their necks. We started them off on wire too and it just got depressing and we almost gave up. This is a better system, the quail are happier, no more scalping and fighting.

We raise quail outside in an enclosed lean-to with an enclosed pen with chicken wire all around it. They are on the ground and we put a little bit of hay around the inside walls. They lay on the ground and we never have trouble finding the eggs. And they aren't on wire, it's on dirt.

For the quail, using wood chips instead of pine shavings would help with finding eggs; they can move the wood chips, not as much as the pine shavings though. Also, using deep litter (around 18") will create a compost pile under them which will add heat, plus, they can dig down and get more insulation with heat and cold temperatures.

For five years my wife and I Had an urban farm and raised quail for eggs and meat for sale at Sacramento area farmers markets. We went through many of the same trials that Kevin and Sarah did. We wanted to raise them on the ground but found for incubation and egg sales, having the quail in cages with egg roll outs Is a must. But o raise out a new batch of meat birds or breeders, at three weeks old we would put them in 12 inch tall quail tractors that were 30“ x 8‘ and fit the dimensions of our market garden beds. They eat the old crops pests, and weeds, fertilize the bed and we can call our quail meat pasture raised. Once the quail ladies started to lay eggs then we would put them into the rollout cages. Hope this helps someone with their quail journey. 🐦
