Do you head down the road with the things you need to take care of any situation that might come up? Especially in the winter and cold? Here's some of the things I have learned over the years. I think another thing that's important for folks to understand is a regular review of what IS in your car, emergency-supplies-wise, same with your kit at home, etc. A 'get home bag' for the car and a 'bug out bag' for the house should be made up & made available, for escaping in a hurry or a long awkward hike back to a patch of civilization. But it's important to *know* what is in there, to review it, & replace whatever needs replacing every so often.

Two items we have and give as gifts we got off of Amazon. One is a bright orange, heavy duty, six foot telescoping, fiberglass bike flag, that many people attach to their bikes so they can be seen when on roadways. We keep them in our vehicles.because here in the Sierras with a bad snow storm that can bury a car, the bright orange shows up more than 6 feet above the roof of a vehicle so the CHP, emergency personnel, snowplows can see there is a buried vehicle or someone in need. Last December I gave family, friends a Plextone Road LED Lighting, Emergency Beacon Safety Lighting Flashing Warning Light for vehicles that have a magnetic base so they hold tight to a vehicle roof, car door etc. They also have a flashlight, with a hook so you can hook it to the open hood when checking the engine. The different flashing modes warn of danger. We were able to see a friend a mile away, who had one flashing on the roof of her truck.

Reflective vest. Actually a great addition for the little space it would take up. And not something I would have thought of. Vehicles have reflectors, people don’t. Important anytime of the year to put on when stopped on the side of the road -esp in busier places. Thanks! I read comments because I often learn so much.

I’ve been following you since the beginning of my tiny house journey and I admire you for all your hard work. I’m single and on my own for the past 5 years but I’m a lot older than you. What impresses me the most about you is the fact that you are young and ambitious for your age. I can’t imagine my daughter living like us not that I am putting her down. She works hard as a traveling RN. You are more like me and then some! You always look for solutions and then execute!! I am happy you are married now and you have each other!! You are awesome!!

I have most of those items when I leave the city, except the tow rope. In my wheel well there's extra room so I store an axe, jumper cables, a toque, gloves, toilet paper, blanket and small shovel, etc. This past summer I opened it up and a mouse had made a lovely little nest on my knit toque!😂

I so appreciate this after getting my first SUV. I live in Oregon in the city. After getting rear ended Thanksgiving weekend with my three kids in a sedan in a small town, it's more on my mind than ever before. You're inspiring some winter preps for me. Thanks :)

Dude here but love paper maps as well. Trying to get my kids to understand that they won't always have access to maps on their phones. Nothing like a state transportation map in your glove compartment when things go sideways on the road.

Lol that opening parts with the pets was hilarious. The dog jumping up and down in and out of the shot wanting the shovel was a hoot.

Once my mom jumped in the car (no coat, hat, or gloves) at like 10pm to come pick up my friends and I from some school activity. Maybe a 20 minute round trip. It was cold and windy, but hey, she was in the heated car. No problem. Well. The car stopped working. This was decades before cell phones and though suburbia, the homes were far apart in places. The first house she went to, the people were not home, same with the second. She said she barely made it to the third which luckily were home and opened the door to my mom barely functioning. After that my mom *always* dressed for the outside, stocked the cars, and never let us kids forget to do the same. Great reminder, Ariel. And hey. Don’t forget Burley. The best heater. Lol.

A few inches of settled snow and Englands railways and Schools shut. We are not in the habit of owning snow chains so the roads are chaotic. Most don't even carry a snow shovel. We are not equipped for snow. The Scots fare slightly better.

Suggestion: I have an annual recurring calendar reminder on my birthday to check all the flashlight and other batteries in my house and car. Nothing worse than having to look under the hood in the dark using dim or dying flashlight. Also prefer headlamp for most things which leaves hands-free.

Ariel, this is such a valuable video, thank you so much. It’s not just for rural mountainous areas either. 2 days ago a tractor trailer jack knifed on the NJ Turnpike and traffic was backed up over 10 miles bumper to bumper. What a nightmare and it’s currently 6 degrees here, so excellent advice for everyone. Happy Holiday’s!🎄

We have that same crate for your dogs. It is fabulous. As you said, it gives your dog a little m 4:02 ore protection in case of an emergency. Well appointed vehicle! 👍

I have a lot of the same things. Added hand warmers and toe warmers plus a bicycle vest for reflection in case I'm close to the road working. I also keep garbage bags and rope in case I come across a road kill.

thank you. I had a vehicle emergency light come on today on my way on a trip.. Thankfully I am in CA and that was two minutes from my house vs out in the middle of huge tundra hills, in a mountain pass, wind chill plus. I got out of the shower 1/2 hour prior, thin hooded beige raincoat coat, I did have a scarf (I get very ill from getting chilled)...I was about to say that my bug out bag, get home bag, everyday carry bag WAS SITTING AT HOME with the bottle of water, trail mix and other items that had not been updated to the bag. But to my credit items in my car such as carpet mats, folding water jug, toeless shoes, red tote bag and lifeboat bars and of course a spare tire, jack, wrench, water bottled. maps. Purse: other than standard $20, 2 cough drops, chapstick, etc. Survival items, nonpea whistle with code on it, lighters, Sw army knife w/saw and awl and a vehicle multi-tool flashlight. One thing I have in the backpack is one of those multi tool camp shovels...I am in the city with a triple A card...lol. Still I thnk I need clothes and sleeping bag. the items listed are not the optimal list but a list of the hodge podge items I have.

Thank you for a great winter survival video!! Actually great for all times of the year, but more critical during the winter when temps can mean life or death.

We live in an urban area with a lot of infrastructure for snow events but there was a surprise storm that came up and a 30 minute trip home took 7 hours due to snow. Most missed item from the emergency kit- a pee bottle hahaha. But it's always smart to be at least minimally prepared. Know the risks for your area and pack accordingly!

If that was NY, that was about 3 years ago. My 18 minute commute home took 5 hours. About 4 hours in, I was near a movie theater that was open. I was able to pull into the parking lot, and use their rest room.

I have a 3 inch plastic bottle with lid in my car. I have actually had to use it on the way home while stuck in traffic caused by a multi car accident! I have it under the front seat with paper towels in it. It is my tent pee bottle lol.

This video has definitely made me think about what I should put in my car I have water and snacks for the dogs and I as well as blankets enough to survive a couple days but we also aren't in too bad of a climate I could get help pretty easily if needed but I could definitely be more prepared

Very well stocked car! Try adding foot/hand warmers to your inventory. They don't degrade in the cold and provide instant warmth to core, feet and hands. I get them by the boxful for our resource room for the homeless but keep them in the car and our power outage kit in the house.

ONE consideration to all you’ve said but the BIGGEST ISSUE I find with most people is they can carry much of this stuff but it wouldn’t matter if they didn’t…because they don’t know how to use them if they had them. I’m thinking you may be the exception to most women as well as some men 😳 Our closest store is about as far if not further… never feel isolated or challenge by our mountain environment….not as high i. Elevation as you but a mountain environment just the same….I love the cold and snow and mountains… and I am as completely prepared with all you’ve shown & more…my family laughs at me. I also have a crank radio and crank lantern…batteries can die quickly in cold temperatures.

Shared you with my Grandson…..all he had was a small scraper…. I just needed him to see that he should be prepared…. Did I mention he was a college student on his own with family 12 hours away…..

I have a suggestion for you to consider as you have a white car and more snow than most people have. Get some black plastic and tape the word help on it with some orange tape and devise a method to secure it onto you car roof. In an emergency it could be a life saver for sure.

I live in an urban area, so I keep reflective vests in the doors of my car (high visability, the size I can fit over a winter jacket). I used a paper car atlas when I was a reporter for a local newspaper in a rural area many years ago. It didn't have the new highway, but it had almost every little dirt road. Very uselful!

Thanks, Aerial, for the comprehensive information as to what is generally needed in emergencies. I am with you on the paper maps. Howeverer, there are two things I would add to those items. One is that you know how to read and use your map/s and another to have and know how to use is a reliable compass. It is very easy to get turned around in strange places and sometimes, even in some not so strange places. Excellent video! You many never need any of the items but when you do need them, they just might save your life. Got Streamlight rechargeable pocket mates for me and the wife. Very handy on the key chain though short run time. Enough to find the big flashlight in the glove compartment or to hop out and check something quickly.

This is a very timely reminder to be prepared! I have always had a roll of duct tape in my vehicles, a sleeping bag, and my Air Force flight suit, among other things. These things have saved my life TWICE! One year, the ladies at church made a list of emergency supplies for use in cars and another for the house. They made up totes for vehicles and another for their homes. A great gift for someone getting their first car or moving out from their parents. I carry a DB Power jumper, it is small and very powerful! I also carry an airpump. The DB Jumper also has the ability to charge a cell phone. I dont quite follow how you would use that bar as leverage to loosen a nut> is there a way you can explain or demonstrate? Great information. I dont travel rural, never know when or where something could happen where your stuck in the car in the cold. Adding blankets to my car. And the Crate for the pup is an excellent way to keep him safe. I have read of dogs taking off when the owner got in a wreck, it scares them to death!

Toilet paper has many uses. Being prepared gives you options and security. Having a big metal bar in the back is handy but a wooden bat or a sugar cane knife under the seat is better.
