Today, we’re going to talk about calorie restriction. Can calorie restriction slow aging?
You may have heard before that counting calories can have anti-aging effects. But, that conflicts with all of the people who have tried a low-calorie diet in the past.
It has been proven that the more you diet and lower your calories, the more you end up gaining the weight back. It also destroys your metabolism over time.
If you’re doing a low-calorie diet with high carbs, you’re going to keep your blood sugars going up and down. If you do a low-calorie diet with low fat, you’re going to be hungry, and it’s not sustainable.
The benefit of calorie restriction is epigenetics.
The two epigenetic triggers for the benefits of calorie restriction are lowering glucose and lowering insulin. The benefits aren’t coming from restricting calories. The benefits are coming from restricting glucose and insulin.
The other problem with a low-calorie diet is that people lower their nutrients. This can create nutrient deficiencies which can lead to all kinds of problems.
I don’t recommend calorie restriction. I do recommend restricting glucose which will indirectly lower your insulin. I recommend the healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. This is a low carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet that is comfortable, sustainable, and provides a ton of health benefits including anti-aging effects.

Dr. Berg, there are plenty of respected researchers and doctors who would beg to differ with you. One place I suggest that you check out is the Calorie Restriction Society. These are UCSF researchers who have delved into this extensively for the last 20 years. On a personal level, I have used calorie restriction for the last 45 years. I am a 68 year old male and I have always been quite healthy and have always maintained my goal weight of 185 lbs. You seem to have bought into the medical establishment's line. I have listened to several of your videos and I respect you very much and that makes me think that you will actually take my recommendations. Have a nice day.

Im not a anti ketoer by any means. I lost over a 100lbs on the keto diet. To burn body fat you must be hypo caloric, keto or not cals in vs cals out. When you go from burgers, pizza and ice cream. To keto mainly whole foods you create a calorie deficit. Jus saying berg and keto are great. I got down to around 12-15% body fat on keto, now i eat carbs but only low glycemic ones and have maintained my wieght for around two years.

I think calorie restriction does slow aging like the studies suggest. The problem is that most people go on temporary diets. If someone is able to go on a low calorie diet as a life habit, it would work just fine. It is better however to pair it with fasting because of the exclusive benefits that come with only fasting. I do fairly strict keto macros and meal prep for 3 days of meals at a time. Since January 2019 I have lost 31 inches overall and 80 pounds. The weight is not coming off as fast but I have gotten beyond my worry I will stall as I realize my body has gone into a routine where I lose inches and then I lose weight. Dr. Berg has been a great help in answering my questions about keto and the more scientific information on insulin, atuophagy, dopamine and gut biomes. On one meal a day for some good months (maybe a year plus). One meal for me is eating in a span of 2 to 3 hours (during the week) or 4 to 6 in weekend. I never eat after 6PM and never before 12PM (except some weekends). During 6PM to 12PM I don't drink water, I am not thirsty, my green smoothies has all I need in it. I eat: fish, eggs, VEGETABLES, bacon, butter, coconut oil, berries, nuts, seeds (soaked), lemons, one sweet fruit here an there. D3, K2 & Omega 3 are on my list almost daily. No coffee nor alcohol. I don't like them. They mess up my energy. I never felt better. I weight 150Lb (65kg) with a BMI of 19% at 50 years of age. I don't care and I don't count any calories, I don't like at all the sugary stuff it make me sleepy if I eat sugar. I sleep like a stone from 10PM to 4AM, after that I am full of energy the whole day, super power of concentration and physical strength. The blood work I do yearly is great, way better than before. I donate blood (maybe once 24 months) to keep the feritin at optimum range. I do a deparasitation once a year. I do filter my water to 0.5 microns. No more allergies, no more colds or flu, no more cold extremities. At my age I should wear glasses according to the establishment. Not for me. I can thread a needle with no problem. The most important thing is that I feel great. I can endure strong physical stress for at least 24 hours with no food/water and I don't feel hungry or thirsty. I test that almost every weekend by fishing 8-10 km (5-6 miles) offshore on lake Erie in a kayak. I don't do gym or sports but I do yoga once a week, ride a bike 4 miles every day. I convince also few friends and they have same great results. Chemical sugar and high insulin are POISON/DRUG/ADDICTION. I think OMAD/Healthy Keto/IF are a great way to OPTIMIZE our lives/health/energy/being. I will post again how I feel in a year from now, but I doubt it will be different. Eating like a rat/cow the whole day has no sense, that's for animals with low IQ.

I first came to IF via the 5:2 Mosely 500cal model, and yes, I've never had such obsessive thoughts about food as on fasting days! I found it tolerable, though, since I could eat normally and not think about it for the rest of the week. When I found out that there was a healthy (clean) version of keto, I started that and kept the same "two days" as OMAD days and now do keto all the time -- much better! I wish I'd known about the healthy keto from the start! Fasting mimicking, though, is Valter Longo's substitution/alternate method for a 3 day water fast that you do over 5 days -- for those who don't want to water fast but want to get the longevity, autophagy, growth hormone, stem cell, immune system reboot benefits. Personally, I prefer to just get it over with in 3 days with water, but it's an option for some....

Dr Berg, the FMD was formulated to compliment chemo therapy- it was not intended as a weight loss protocol. Also, if you wear a cgm and do the Prolon FMD, many people have a glucose spike. Prolon is low protein high starch. Anyway, I think it is important to make that distinction- FMD or Prolon is a medical protocol to nutritionally support chemo-not a weight loss tool.

If calorie restriction does curtail the speed of aging, and this can be proven to be applicable not to just animals, but humans as well, it still stands to reason that using low carb to achieve this calorie restriction is far more prudent than using the conventional low fat approach. Since low carb diets are generally richer in protein and fat than what conventional calorie restricted programs have, the combination of these two macros produces the most sustained level of satiety. The more satiated one is, the less likely a person will overeat, and therefore the more compliant one will be with the calorie restriction that purportedly mitigates the speed of aging. Speaking from personal experience, I can attest to this. I was a chronic dieter after graduating from college. I would dutifully lose 30 to 40 lbs, and then gain it back because I simply could not stave off the hunger for more than a 4 or 5 months. I eventually ballooned to the heaviest I have ever been (230 lbs). Then, 4 years ago, I switched to low carb. I did low carb with intermittent fasting, using the same amount of calorie restriction as I did when using low fat/portion control diets, but this time I lost over 110 lbs, and I am able to keep it off. What this goes to show you is that the two paradigms of dieting - focusing on macro nutrient ratios vs. simple calorie restriction - does not have to be at odds against each other. Quite the opposite. The use of the former (focusing on low carb macros) can help facilitate the latter (calorie restriction). They can work in a synergistic manner.

Type 2 diabetes should be renamed to "Processed food disorder" according to Robert Lustig, MD. I completely agree with him and it's a condition that comes on later in life, you are not born with it. There are of course other factors involved but dietary choices has the strongest influence for most people. How about clean up your eating and cure diabetes type 2 naturally with carb reduction, which ever one that may apply to you. Forget about Metformin. It addresses the symptoms, it doesn't fix the underlying problem. It's a lucrative business for drug manufactures to keep patients sick by not addressing the underlying cause so patients keep coming back for more. There is a reason these guys make billions of dollars each year. Again, ignore whatever doesn't apply to you. Have a good life.

Yes, for example yesterday evening at 5:30pm, I had 6 ounces of creamy garlic Tuscan salmon, Mashed cauliflower, a small bowl of Zuppa Tuscana and for desert I had a large spinach and kale salad with onions, red, yellow and green bell peppers, artichoke hearts and cucumbers. I only use organic, extra virgin olive oil for my dressing. I also take Dr. Berg's trace minerals. I was stuffed after that meal. The day before I had a bowl of chili con carne, a side of brocoli and cheese and that same salad. I sometimes add bacon and cheese to my salad. I don't eat until I'm hungry and I stop eating when I'm satisfied. Some other dishes I've had recently are stuffed green peppers, stuffed eggplant, shrimp alfredo (with zucchini noodles), Chicken alfredo, Rib eye steak with asparagus, smothered pork chops (I use cornstarch to make my gravy) and beef liver and onions. I have a large salad with pretty much every meal. I really enjoy cooking and as you can see I eat good. I was 197 pounds on July 4th, blood pressure was horrible, I got sick all the time and would stay sick for weeks, I was out of breath all the time, barely got a good nights sleep and often woke with headaches. ALL OF THOSE ISSUES ARE GONE. Dr. Berg is a God send. I'm 164 pounds, sleep like a baby, blood pressure is under control and I run up stairs with no problem. I am 50 years young.

(Some of the videos in this research included you on various channels. ) For the record, I've been on strict Carnivore diet for 1 month now and have lost more weight, feel great and light, and eczema is 100% gone for first time in 10 years. A lot of these Carnivore diets advocates and Dr.s (I'm sure you know the group I'm referring to, Saladino etc) Say that plants are actually bad for you and full of toxins and anti-nutrients that reek havoc on our autoimmune systems and digestive system. But in your videos, you recommend a massive bowl of salad everyday! I'm just curious, are you still an advocate for eating this way everyday after all your research on carnivore diet, and knowing the fact that people can get all the vitamins and minerals to live and thrive by sticking to a nose to tail Carnivore diet without having to assault their system with all the plant toxins? Thanks for your time.

The ideas of lowering glucose/insulin and going low carb is NOT what the CRON Studies suggested in order to reap the benefits. Rhesus monkeys had trouble eating the low calorie, nutrient dense food they were given, so sugar was added to it which raised the calories (somewhat) but still kept it within the CRON range and the monkeys ate it and their markets for longevity increased - despite the sugar.

The 5:2 diet was devised by Dr Michael Mosely who is manifestly addicted to his beloved carbs and to the very act of eating as such. Dr Valter Longo never suggested that people who practice the fasting mimicking diet eat any old junk during the non-fasting periods, though there is no sound basis for Longo's recommendation to so drastically restrict protein intake during the non-fasting periods. A book that dispassionately explains the physiology of caloric restriction is "Beyond the 120-year Diet" by the late Roy Walford MD (notwithstanding the fact that he wrote this at a time before the diet-heart hypothesis was shown to be fundamently flawed). A useful study would be one that repeats Walford's Biosphere 2 experiment with human subjects, on a calorie-restricted, nutrient dense, but much higher protein intake. It's noteworthy that Walford was Longo's mentor, yet expressly points out the dangers of protein inadequacy and even in his "Beyond the..." book never advocated such drastic protein restriction as does Longo (nor expresses such anti-meat sentiments as does Longo)..

"From the age of 50, people in the moderate carb group were on average expected to live for another 33 years. This was four years more than those with extreme low-carb diets, 2.3 years more than the low-carb diet grouping and 1.1 more years than the high-carb group." They did find that replacing carbs with plant based protein and fat did not lower life expectancy. But if you're replacing fruit with more meat, you're asking for trouble.

The Calorie Connection RESTRICTING AN ANIMAL'S calorie intake is the most famous intervention known to extend life span. Discovered more than 70 years ago, it is still the only one absolutely proven to work. The restricted regime typically involves reducing an individual's food consumption by 30 to 40 percent compared with what is considered normal for its species. Animals ranging from rats and mice to dogs and possibly primates that remain on this diet not only live longer but are far healthier during their prolonged lives. Most diseases, including cancer, diabetes and even neurodegenerative illnesses, are forestalled. The organism seems to be supercharged for survival. The only apparent trade-off in some creatures is a loss of fertility.

Dr. Berg, if you ever do a video that covers some of the different types of medications given to diabetics to control their blood sugars please make sure you expose what some of the side effects can be especially Metformin as it can cause blood clots in some people. I had it happen to me and I nearly died with a massive pulmonary embolism in both lungs.

@Der Eric Berg. I am working on losing weight. I am a type 2 diabetic as of last year, Hypertension, Hypothryroid as well. I am 60YO, 5'9", was 290 lbs am now 202 lbs . I use a app called lose it which has been very helpful and I can see my fats, carbs and proteins, fiber, water. Do not liking the feeling of Keto, but I do aim for 70 grams carbs a day, protein 88 gms, fat 100gms. The question is I have lose it app set to 1520 calories a day. I do allow myself to have extra calorie based on exercise. If I am still hungry I will eat an eat or cheese. Do you consider this too low a calorie as I work toward 180 LB? I think others will find you answer useful.

I’m new to the channel, have you done a video yet on how the keto diet affects athletes who care about performance. I would love to go on the keto diet but I compete in sports like, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu jitsu, and power lifting. When ever I go low carb my performance suffers greatly. This diet doesn’t seem optimal for the athlete that performs in predominantly anaerobic activities. I would love to hear your thoughts, thanks
