A great simple build and you look like you are having great fun!

This is the best version I've seen anyone build. I also have the kit in my stash.

This model was obviously the result of the kids' game "Telephone." Except with a paragraph or two instead of a sentence or word. What came out was this... The pattern shop may have gotten a reference picture, who can say. Then there's the limitation of mold-making. So! The original TOS shooting model was a "gift" from someone attached to NASA back in the day. This was a concept model of what our future space stations might look like. In the original, the "saucers" are nested cross-sections of each shape that unfold from a central hub. Thus in the original, these things unfold by sliding over each other. Then, I presume, space construction workers use space glue to seal them all together. Back in the arly 60s there were plans for a space shuttle of some kind. These things had to be shipped small and enlarge to do their jobs. Anyway, as the account I read goes, the original traveling model (NASA did a lot of educational exhibits in schools, I remember a cool one back in 1967 but which did NOT feature such a model, we had table-top pieces of equipment and a liquid nitrogen freeze the rose part!) was in pretty bad shape when it arrived at Burbank. The prop gang worked some minor miracles and the K7 was moved into TV history. That we have something that would pass the "10 foot" quick glimpse test (uhh... maybe 20...) after all these years, is a wonder. Back in the, urr.. 80s, some plucky modeler did make a garage kit of a much more accurate K7. Expensive and I believe, solid-- harder to light. As our good chum, Lou has joked, you would get far a far more accurate K7 by whittling a block of wood! You did all that one could with this model-- you complicated it only by adding several lighting aspects. And your build looks great. A floating city of light and warmth in the cold depths of space, ready to greet a weary space crew-- I mean, what more does one hope for?

Nice job Phil. I too have one in the stash. Whenever I build it I won't be sweating any details to make it screen accurate since it's off in so many areas. But when you look at it everyone knows it's the K-7 station

I think part of the charm of some of these old kits is the fact that they are inaccurate. I am glad they did not retool it to make it so. Excellent work again Phil. I enjoy the fact that you enjoy this hobby.

I built this kit when I was a kid. I thought it was pretty close to what appeared in the Trouble with Tribbles episode. The station was shown so briefly, and back in the day, TVs didn't have the high resolution they have now. I never knew there was a "tank extension" on the station until now. First time I've seen an image of the filming model.

It's almost accurate if you squint your eyes, 😂 There is a very nice K7 built for DS9, Trials and tribulations, which could be the reference photo your looking at.

Phil, you are too hard on yourself. You are doing good work. And I don’t care what the naysayers say about this model. It may be inaccurate, it may be basic, but it’s what you do with it that counts. You made it into a cool model! I love it! And I love these old kits. I build them too. Keep building them and stop listening to the rivet counters. This build was fun! Always loved seeing new ships and objects in the original series. The space stations always intrigue me, because they were so far from home. Great build of one of my favorite things in the Star Trek universe!

It looks really nice for what it is, a 70s model kit, and you have done a great job on it. The best part is it looks like you enjoyed building it.

Your right Phil, it is what it is, it's a product of it's time yes it has fitment issues and yes it's not accurate, BUT you can get a pretty good looking model that looks like the filming model.

love the build Phil i have this kit nd have been wondering what to do with it now i know 😀 also I'm pretty sure the original release of this kit is either late seventies or 80's so it's old !!

As a kid I built most of those old Star Trek kits and enjoyed them, except for the K7 space station; for one thing it did not have lights like the two ships did. Yours looks way better than the original basic kit, nice work. Maybe one day I will revisit that kit and try to make it look more like the real prop, or maybe make a Mirror Universe version of the station. Looking forward to your Halloween build.

I wonder if AMT ever saw a production still of the filming model like you have? I just rewatched the episode, and at no time is there a clear shot of the missing pod. Only a quick hint 2 or 3 times of the bottom of the tank hidden by the rest of the main center disc. Did they design it from the images in the episode?

great video? the only part of modeling i'm not sure of is the lighting but just a basic flashing light maybe with some led strip or a few 3 mm with a flashing chip any good sites to learn the basics? and a good site fot the stuff i need to do it.

Evansdesign.com has everything you need - check out Trekworks he did a very comprehensive basics of wiring a few years back. Make sure you have some good basic supplies: a good soldering iron with a variable temperature control. Some wire cutters. Some shrink wrap to protect your connection. Micro-Mark has a good starter kit.

Thanks for the warning! As nice a job as you've done, that kit has always been horribly inaccurate and apparently still is. To the point that I'd have to 3D print almost an entirely new one to accurize it, making it not worth buying, even in its modern release.
