This is so well done. Over the years, I was able to know Franz Joseph (Schnaubelt), Doug Drexler, Andrew Probert, and John Eaves (and met Gene Roddenberry). I made the desk models of the NOMAD satellite for both ST: Enterprise (Dead Stop), and Picard 2 (Ep6). A visit to Paramount during the early days of TNG was lots of fun. Nice to see an academic review of SNW's design (since I'm also a designer). Thanks for all your hard work! P.S. it was a visit by Matt Jefferies to the NYWF in 1964-65 that influenced him the most to use mid century design for the show.

Furturists are brings fantastic opinions on starship design, whether an academic version or alternative timeline types…can't wait to see more ships.

The door's design also seems to also indicate in which direction artificial is gravity is pointing so crew can prepare themselves should that system get compromised and needing re-initializing.

@@sw-gs And, y'know, not use slick floors which look like they'd have terrible traction if you need to run down them. Unless it's some kind of future floor that looks slick but it actually grippy. I checked, and most ST shows have had carpets. Discovery, SNW, Prodigy, and the Abramsverse Enterprise haven't.

@@EGRJ Traction depends not just on the materials used in the floors but also used the materials used in the soles of the shoes people wear. With rubber soles you‘ll have good traction on any kind of floor. I think the more important factor is: on a starship you want floors that easy to clean and don‘t absorb smells. Just imagine several hundred people dropping sweat onto carpets while doing the daily runs they need to stay in shaped on carpeted corridors…

It is insanely cool to listen to you talk about the design of the ship and actually trying to make it work and then ON TOP OF THAT, you're so much of an architecture nerd that you modeled it. Dude, you are incredibly talented.

When I saw the floor lamps in Pike's quarters (especially next to the bed), I immediately recognized them as classic Danish Modern. They were designed by Poul Henningsen. His first designs for this lamp were made in 1927!

When I was a child in the 70s, I was in awe of the design of the USS Enterprise. This new design makes me feel the same only more grown up. “5 Forward” is beautiful and feels like a Michelin stared restaurant serving nouvelle cuisine. The warm tones contrast with the cold of space presented through the floor to ceiling windows. Pike’s quarters seem vast compared to older Trek quarters and the addition of a kitchenette and a Malm design fireplace adds to the feeling of home and not just billeting. My two cents worth. Loved the video as always, off the fly my 400i around the Verse.

Aspiring games designer here. I tried to do something similar for a college project earlier this year, and I'd love to know the processes and techniques that you used in order to model and texture these areas. They look out of this world (lol) and I'd love to one day be able to pull something like this off one day.

Your modelling of the interior is superb, cudos to your skills there!

Love what you did with this one - your passion shone through, and it was really interesting to hear your thoughts and the historical context, and then the clever measurement work/mathematical side. Also 5 forward, amazing!

As a fan of Star Trek for just over 36 years now, and being a huge fan of the original NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-D, THIS has been by far, my absolute version of the Enterprise. Strange New Worlds, and its production designers knocked it out of the park inside and out! And she even looked great animated! My first good look at the SNW Enterprise, and my heart skipped beats, it is THE perfect balance of 1960's aesthetic, with modern upgrades to, everything. And this video has been awesome :)

This is why you’re one of my favorite channels I’ve found in the last couple years. Really phenomenal work. If you ever feel motivated to do An Architect Reviews episode on the TNG Enterprise, that would be fantastic

I too would love to see a breakdown of the Galaxy Class Enterprise. People poke fun of the "Marriott Hotel in Space" look, but I always thought it was such a great blend of futuristic and comfortable. Considering in the show it was supposed to be the most advanced ship in the fleet, and was designed to operate on its own for long periods of time, the design fit perfectly. I know if I had to serve on one of these things for months, or even years, at a time; I would want to live on something as comfortable as the Enterprise-D.

3:26 Awesome calling out design artist Matt Jefferies here, who was immortalized in the name of the iconic access tubes that are so essential in any episode with mechanical problems or invaders on the ship.

I hate to say it but you one upped yourself on this one ,I am turning 59 in october so needless to say I am a huge nerd from the 60's to today and watched every original Star Trek episode somewhere in the 50 to 100 times each, that includes all the other spinoff's of coarse, next gen was dear to my heart but this looks amazing and will watch all of these episodes in all their glory,having said that, this is so cool and you really went above and beyond where no other content creator I have ever seen has ever gone before, If you could see me, I am standing and applauding you good sir.thank you for this you have made my month.Don't let the work get you down,from my experience, you will remember the most difficult projects that you toil over and give the most, this effort both physical and mental,usually yields the most rewarding and impressive results. Great job!

The Strange New Worlds Enterprise comes off as a beautiful ship, however I can't help but think that those shiny floors would be incredibly slippery day-today, and potentially hazardous in an emergency situation when everyone is running around.

The one thing about reflective surfaces is that it can make things look a bit abstract and confusing on black surfaces. The bridge has black shiny floors and areas around the bridge. With all the lights big or small, the reflections make it difficult to process what is there and what is simply reflected light. Sometimes a flat surface helps to define the actual shape of things and keeps the reflection down to a minimum.

I'd love to hear you fawn about the rebuilding of the D bridge for Picard, and the overall design from an architects perspective. One of the greatest moments in trek history and it was a true labor of love.

Wow! Excellent work! I'm 52 and a Star Trek Fan. Now, having said that, the sets of the Enterprise 1701 in the original series were, well, a product of their time. They had no idea Star Trek would become what it has nearly 60 years later; a vast franchise of 13 movies and 11 TV series to date. I know it will be impossible to make a prequel show looking like the 60's original, especially in the 21st century and I'm ok with that. This is a franchise we all love and respect, and perhaps are even jealous about. But in our current times the Enterprise as depicted in SNW is simply gorgeous and welcomed! TOS will always be there as the one that started it, ship design, sets and all. I think we all understand that modernization was inevitable. I'm just glad the name Enterprise was kept through it all and that the original show hasn't been tossed aside for being old.

So nice to see this video out. Hugely grateful for your passion of this and wanting to take us with you on these journeys.

I always loved the original Constitution Class design from the original show. when they showed off the new design for The Motion Picture my eyes fell out of my head! the TNG came around with the 1701-D. Then this design came up, and I really like what they did with it. I just wish that Jefferies had this fleshed out design back in the 60's!

Something that I love about this design originating in Disco was the stark differences it shows between a prototype pure science vessel that could one day become something more friendly/livable, as proven by the changes in later seasons, if it had passed into proper service like the NX did and the Flagship that even the Disco crew viewed as the ideal of the Federation/Starfleet.

I love the updated look of the Enterprise. It's now my favourite ship from the Trek universe.

I think this is the most gorgeous version of the Enterprise. It mashes a perfect blend of retro and futuristic space age design. The wrap over windows that double as a skylight are a particular highlight for me. Just absolutely gorgeous design. The attention to detail with the lighting is also a highlight for me. They don't just light the spaces for aesthetics, they are lit in a way that has functionality in case of an emergency and what not. I absolutely love it. My dream would be to play a Trek game with a fully explorable Enterprise to command and live in. This ship does not have my favorite exterior in terms of all the Enterprise designs over the years, but the interior is pure art and at least in my opinion, the best design yet. It's definitely a place I would love to live if I had to spend months or years aboard a starship in the darkness of space.

I do need to agree with you. It's refreshing to see a modern interpretation of the Enterprise. It may bend the rules and scaling here and there, but that's a hill I can die on. It's somewhat refreshing too that we can see a ship that feels at home, and we are talking about a ship that will endure a five-year exploratory mission. Accommodation is important. And it's just a bit sad knowing the New Trek haters simply pointing out whatever thing wrong with the new show, and quickly dogpiling everyone who shows a little bit of respect to the New Trek. It's as if liking the classic and modern Trek is forbidden for some unknown reason. But maybe it's just them trying to show their superiority complex because they don't have shit in real life.

Very nice presentation, and a fantastic modeling job.

Professional Engineer and former Navy sailor here. A few thoughts. 1) Just call it forward crew lounge. That would indicate an aft crew lounge exists as well. We didn't need to name a space beyond it's function in the Navy. If you must name it then it could be named by it's frame number. Ships frames are the ribs that attach to the keel of the ship. The nautical convention, as I recall, is Deck number-Frame number to identify where you are. Since the frames in the saucer would be in degrees of a circle maybe call it 5-0 lounge. 2) I like the idea of angling the outer wall in the corridors of the saucer section so that anywhere in the interior corridor you know which way is to the outside edge of the saucer, similar to the other comment about the door detail that shows which way is down. 3) The frame in the corner of the corridor should be wider where the beam meets the column. 4) Fire is the worst thing on a ship since it can spread so rapidly so Pike having a fireplace is ridiculous. And before you go but Inde this is a starship remember that fire was still an issue in TNG and Voyager. 5) the quarters are too large. They could be about twice the size of Kirk's quarters. The crew is about half that of Kirk's. But they shouldn't be four times the size.

It adds value that seems hard to find elsewhere on youtube. As someone who heavily employs 3D CAD in my own profession, I definitely understand how much work goes into it.

It's a perfect merge, based on Connie's hull, and trying to incorporated styles on Galaxy as much as possible in interior, while integrading elements on Refit Connie as much as possible in exterior. The only problem is it was setting BEFORE not AFTER the TOS. If it is AFTER the TOS it will be so goddamn great in anyway.

Interesting how the lounge moves around the ship. SNW has it forward, TOS has it buried in the saucer without any windows, and TMP has it port-side aft next to the impulse deck

Phenomenal design elements. When I spoke with some folks who worked on tng/voy one of the many discussions were are we going to see an updated Tos bridge ever. I myself did some pieces in Blender but this is just truly breath taking. It would be great to work on a project of this scale.

Wow! That's a very detailed and great work. And I love the Strange New Worlds interiors as well. The ship really looks like a real place to work and live in

14:55 It might still work, if the Lounge takes up two decks. An upper corridor wouldn't be able to make a full circle without terminating on or navigating around the space allocated for 5-Forward, but it means there could be another corridor ring that's closer to the perimeter to account for the smaller radial dimension of the officer quarters. For the lower deck ring that leads to the Lounge, crew quarters could utilize spokes to access them, doubling up to make efficient use of the space determined by the Lounge's dimensions. Only half of the quarters would have a window view and be rather small, but that fits perfectly with regular crew quarters, as opposed to officers.

Great job on the modelling.

Minor credit you missed, the corridor design dates back to the movie and was continually redressed for TNG. One detail never cannonized, (unless Lower Decks did it,) is there are supposed to be equipment lockers behind the wall panels. Aside from plasma relays, isolinear conduit, and of course murder rocks, there was supposed to be more mundane equipment like fire fighting gear, emergency rations, even a spacesuit. I think there was even a sketch of a fold out bunk/rescue shelter. Somewhere a crewman could jump into when the Klingon disruptor depressurizes deck 7, or where refugee sleep when you just rescued 300 colonists from an exploding supernova.

Instead of 5 Forward, try The Happy Bottom Riding Club. It was a dude ranch, restaurant, and hotel operated by aviator Florence "Pancho" Barnes near Edwards Air Force Base in the Antelope Valley of California's Mojave Desert. It was where all of the aviators who were pushing the limits, breaking the sound barrier, and where many of the first astronauts ate and drank. Very history centric and gives a real exploration vibe. The only addition I'd put is names on a wall of those on the enterprise who had fallen similar to the pictures put up at the riding club.
