Bruce Lee Humiliated Karate Teacher In His Own Dojo

I came across this video from the Beerdy Bruce Lee Central channel called "Bruce Lee Traveled to Karate Dojos in the US Beating Everyone Up (yes, this actually happened)"
In it he claims that Bruce Lee walked into a Karate Dojo and beat up the entire school? I mean, I thought that only happened in a scene from the movie "Fists of Fury," but there's Beerdy is saying that this fight scene didn't only happen in the movies.
So Beerdy's video starts out with this statement about how Bruce Lee travelled around the United States from the mid-60s up until 1973 challenging karate students in their dojos to some friendly sparring. The reason for this, as Beerdy says, is that Bruce Lee's goal in life was to assimilate as many martial arts as possible into Jeet Kune Do, and so to do this, he felt that he needed to fight against many different styles and people in their dojos.
According to Beerdy, Bruce wanted to assimilate as many martial arts as possible to become the most complete martial artist in the world.

Praying Mantis really works, those finger strikes are no joke. The reason I know this is because of my dad. He never took any martial arts of any kind, but his job was unpacking crates of beef from the back of a truck which required him using his fingers to pull the crates out. He could do one finger push ups with either hand. When I got older he would jab me with those fingers whenever I got out of line, and I always hurt for hours where he jabbed me. And this was only from his years of pulling crates of meat out of truck with his finger tips. He had no training in any type of fighting what so ever. I can only imagine someone with that level of physical conditioning having an education in fighting. So yeah, I say Praying Mantis can work.

I trained jkd myself from age 12-14, seriously and less than a decade after Lee died. I relied on open hands for 3 inches extra reach and pokes to shoulder or chin more to upset the stance of opponents. I always used to practice a finger jab to heavy doors including ones with a heavy self closing mechanism, that need a good push to open. I used to lightning tap it with a finger and make it swing open and hit the wall. It was a form of training and practice on the spot. No chance in hell I could do it now and I'm still in good shape, still do pushups with feet on table. But the story is still bullshit about doing that to 8 guys before any of them closed. Plus this 80-90 yr old person would not anonymously choose a utuber to tell now.

Here's a thought🤔...in addition to your point, it's like anyone's granddad that had to do all kinds of work with hand tools bcuz they didn't have certain power tools to drive screws, etc. So they intentionally had development in ways and areas of the body they probably gave no real thought to and when they grab you to get your attention, you're like, "hey that hurts", and to them they may think they're not putting that much pressure in their grip bcuz it seems normal to them until they realize that's what they're doing and like Bruce learn to control how much pressure to use...🤨opinions?

FYI - Mantis isnt the only art that uses Finger Strikes. Wing Chun has it, as well as every other Chinese combat art. Its only the sportized arts, that tend to lack methods like this, and or, lack the proper training methods to develop it correctly. I trained my fingers by 1) Tapping them mildly on hardwood 2) Striking wall mounted sandbags 3) Accuracy practice on small hanging balls, and or a marker DOT on the sandbags. 4) Hitting a metal safe's door closed. 5) knocking on, or opening doors, with the fingers 6) Finger strength exercises, such as finger pushups, as well as grip strength on squeeze balls or an Eagle-Claw device. I did a similar thing with my Toes (stabbing them into the sandbag)... for toe-stabbing kicks. The tech was developed for good reason. And when you combine it with internal-power (fajing), and to the right spots on the body (Dim Mak) ...you can get scary results. There is a channel by user LilyLily that features Dim Mak. Some of it seems fake... but there clearly are some real clips on it, and they are devastating. As a responsible individual, Ive never struck someone with my fingers. However, I did toe-stab a Kyokushin Karate instructors inner thigh muscle. He was temporarily unable to move, which allowed me to easily walk in with a flurry of handstrikes. He was amazed, and asked me what the heck I had just did to him. A different time, I was sparring a fighter, as we agreed not to use kicks for this match. However, when we got close and I was a bit tied up.. as sort of a joke, I lifted my knee in a circle, and lightly tapped the out-side of his leg. He instantly dropped to the floor. I thought he was faking it... messing with me, because I barely tapped him. Turned out, I hit a pressure point.

I took Jeet Kun do from the only instructor I have ever found anywhere so far that really followed the Jeet Kun Do style of Chinese street fighting. We did try to go to other martial arts schools for friendly no contact sparring matches. Unfortunately the friendly no contact matches went right out the window soon as we walked into a few different martial art schools. Our instructor ended up fighting a full contact fight and the other instructor didn’t last long at all trying to beat our instructor. Once our instructor showed he had got the instructor of the other school in a position where he knew he couldn’t win the fight the other instructor backed down and didn’t try to attack our instructor any more. We all backed out of the door of the other schools before anything got any worse? After having the same thing happen at a few different schools my instructor stopped trying to set up friendly sparring matches with other schools. My instructor’s reasoning for wanting to spare with other schools is to have his students learn how to fight and defend against other styles of martial arts and we did study all forms of martial arts as well as how to defend against the other styles. We attempted going to a martial arts tournament in Seattle once and our instructor had signed up several students to fight in the matches. But the officials over seeing the matches wasn’t giving the Jeet Kun Do students any points when their punches or kicks would of clearly hit their opponents. Our instructor told the students ok if they don’t want to count our hits and kicks. Then stop pulling your punches and kicks. Knock your opponent out and then see if they want to count our punches and kicks then? Needless to say after a few matches where our students started knocking out their opponents we were then asked to leave! That was the first where I seen how prejudice these American martial arts schools and tournaments are against any true Jeet Kun Do school. Even when we’re following their rules and not using the moves we been taught to use in street fighting that of course isn’t allowed in tournament matches! My instructor didn’t like being called a master at all, he didn’t believe in the word master cause that means you have mastered the martial arts. Which according to my martial arts instructor no one ever masters martial arts. You can always be better and should always be striving to improve yourself no matter how good you are? Our instructor also didn’t believe in giving out belts either. I studied for several years and a few times our friends had gotten their kids into other martial arts schools for lessons. Their kids wanted me to go check out their school. I ended up friendly sparring with some of the students and fortunately it remained friendly! After a few sparring matches their instructor asked if I was a black belt? I smiled and told him my instructor didn’t believe in belts. Their instructor said if I come to his school that he get me a black belt right away! LOL I never studied martial arts for belts, nor do I ever want a belt either with the way the legal system is! Those belts get used against you when the cops get involved in any fight you get into! Been a few fights I been in , I’m self defense protecting myself and the cops were not happy they couldn’t charge me for being a professional fighter since I don’t have a belt they can use against me. Those belts are more dangerous than not having one in my opinion! I owe to my friends for finding this Jeet Kun do school. I was a pretty good street fighter thru high school. My friends started taking martial arts at school and would come test it out on me. When it didn’t work they change to a different school. Then one day my friends started kicking my butt! That wasn’t easy on my ego either! LOL So I decided I better start going to this martial arts school too! But getting into the school not easy at all. You got to stand in a horse stance for 2 hours and you can’t stand up. If you stand up at all you don’t get in. I failed the first time, partly because I been in a car accident and broke a ankle and my strength wasn’t 100%. I waited till my legs got stronger and the 2nd time I made it the 2 hour. That 2 hour was the easy part compared to the 4 hour classes we go through twice a week. You learn really quickly not to eat anything on class nights unless you wanted to vomit everything you ate before class! It was torture going thru those classes, many quit after the first class. If you weren’t committed to being your absolute best it’s not a school where you will last very long! Our instructor wasn’t teaching for making money, he wanted to make as many students as he could their very best at Jeet Kun do. If you stuck it out for 4 years then he taught you for free after that time. Those 4 years are he’ll though, but I have never been in better shape either! In the long run it was certainly worth it! I’m sure there’s got to be other good Jeet Kun do schools somewhere? But none that I have found anywhere around Oregon or Washington? Maybe California I’ve heard rumors of Bruce Lee’s students teaching too? Sure would love to spend some time with one of Bruce Lee’s students sometime, I know many were actors in the movie too though! Hopefully a few carried on with the teaching from Bruce?

Bruce Lee never went around looking for trouble. He did, however, visit Yip Man in 1972, just before he died, and sparred some of Yip's students. Bruce did complain that the senior students wanted no part of him though. This incident is documented in the book "Bruce Lee The Incomparable Fighter" (1988). It's written by his friend Mito Uhera.

If you look at the comments on that video, I did ask him directly what proof he has of the story, and he never responded to me. The story (even though he did respond to some of my other comments) caught my interest because my original style was seven star praying mantis, and my first sifu, Chiu Lien was a junior student to Shi Kien "Han". The application of pressure point technique Beerdy described is accurate to Seven Star technique, but the transmission of the style was through the chig wu Athletic Association. At that point in China in the early 60s I believe Shaolin monks were still being suppressed by the communist government. It is very possible probable even that Bruce and Shi Kien traded techniques on the set period but other than the video you are discussing. I never heard anything remotely close to the story for the years I trained praying mantis. And the fact that he could not produce any verifiable proof whatsoever blows a lot of holes in the story

Whatever your style of interest, train to fight and defend yourself. Spar often. And of course, Be water! (meaning, be adaptive and not rigid in your technique / style).

Gave you a thumbs up since you sound good & sincere yet I disagree with the assumption that WE grow old ...... The getting old in years is not the problem. I was very fortunate to have seen The Master of Masters while I was in the U.S. Navy onboard LST-1195 . The Master looked exactly as Joel potrayed him ; basically , old as dirt but his movements were faster than any other human on Earth ! Age is not a problem , he moved as if time did not exist ! We had Seal Team & Marines aboard during 73 - 74' & The Master , whom some martial artists doubt really exists , was also aboard . He trains The Teams when he is not doing his missions for an agency that starts w / C and ends in A . The Master does exist & was present to give actor Joel Grey his presence so Joel could act in the movie " The Destroyer " which came out appx 1985. If you want to see a great performance where Joel recreates The Master & his personality on screen , watch that . Mr. Grey captured the real Master of Masters in that film. LOOK AT SOME OF THE PICTURES OF BRUCE HOLDING FULL GROWN MEN ABOVE HIS HEAD LIKE THEY WEIGHED NOTHING HE WAS THE FASTEST MAN IN HISTORY EVEN THE TOP MARTIAL ARTISTS IN THE WORLD THAT FOUGHT HIM THOUGHT THEY COULD BEAT HIM AND THEY SAID HE TOOK THEM DOWN IN SECONDS AND THAT HE WAS UNBEATABLE. IF HE HAD LIVED AND SLOWED DOWN A LITTLE BECAUSE OF AGE HE'D STILL BE FASTER THAN ANYONE ELSE. HE LOVED TO WORK OUT HE TOLD ESQUIRE MAGAZINE THATS WHAT HE DOES TO RELAX IS WORK OUT HE WOULD HAVE STAYED IN SHAPE AND STILL HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS LOOK AT CHUCK NORRIS HES STILL IN GREAT SHAPE AND A FEW MONTHS OLDER THAN BRUCE LEE AND I GUARANTEE YOU CHUCK CAN STILL TAKE DOWN MOST PEOPLE AND CAN DEFEND HIMSELF IVE SEEN HIM WORKOUT AT HIS AGE HES STILL FAST AND STRONG AND BRUCE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME

Bruce requested to spar with the students, and not to try to embarrass the sensei or sifu of the school. Of the more organized fights he had, especially the one with Lau Dai-Chuen he asked all who watched to promise to not to discuss it. Bruce was NOT trying to humiliate people or go around picking fights. But he also didn’t suffer a-holes who wanted to keep pushing his buttons either.

@Nic777 People forget that the reason why Bruce Lee was moved to America by his father was because he was street fighting all of the gang members in Hong Kong. There's even police reports of the fights. People that think he wasn't a legit fighter haven't done any real research. They do what you say, they think it has to be on video. Which like I also said, you'd have never caught those moments back in those days.

@@gagetaylor192 There is a right wing guy on youtube called Crowder who made that claim: "Bruce lee was a tiny guy who never fought in tournaments so he is fake". I think a lot of the hate for Bruce is just jealousy and the fact its easy to diss on people that are dead. I can make up shit about any martial artist that died and not have to face criticism from them since they can't speak in their defense. It's why I remind people that combat sport is not the same as fighting assassin in real life that wants to kill you. The latter is what Bruce Lee was more into ie if the moves are slow and impractical and not energy efficient then it might not save your life in a death match. What matters is science behind why something works or doesn't work. That's what differentiates Bruce from the others. If you were attacked by thugs in a gang and they had no reason to hold back when they beat you up, will what you knowas a martial artist save your life? That's why it's so important in MMA to look at things from a scientific perspective not worry about traditions. Traditions don't matter in a fight to not die. What matters is what works in practice. Bruce is considered the father of MMA for that reason. Yes MMA could have technically existed before Bruce, (in the form of street fighting which allows anything) but he popularised the idea because he was charismatic enough to not care about traditionalists criticising him. In much the same way you wouldn't need to care what your boss thinks if you work at a place where you don't need the money and just there to avoid getting bored. If you are well known, confident, and test everything you claim in practice, you don't have to give a shit what people with lower IQ believe. Your goal is to force them to prove it in practice to see if it has merit. This is what deep thinkers care about not showing off: Actually getting to the truth.

They met in the Golden Harvest parking lot after Jim got out of a cab because there was no one to pick him up from Kai Tak airport. Lee did many Demos as an invited guest. Jhoon Rhee and Ed Parker mostly. Not Robert Trias. He visited schools of the senseis he respected and he enjoyed sharing, suggesting that students not make "Kato" sounds while sparring, and encouraging beginners. Race didn't matter because he was"hip" anyway. Bruce was an acquired taste to the assumed superiority of the sixties shorei goju, kempo, tang soo do , and mingled with white supremacy, Karate people who thought they were the stuff. Not many knew what they were looking at BUT there were not quick to go one up on him either. Beerdy mocks the Lee legacy. Always has. It is nice to finally hear something resembling the truth re Bruce Lee. I've personally heard two separate, unrelated stories about Bruce visiting Karate dojos to train, spar, whatever. In one, he did, indeed, spar with a couple karate students. One student, notably, was much bigger than Bruce and just as fast. Bruce in no way whatsoever went in there and embarrassed him or anyone. In the second story, after watching two senior students sparring, Bruce complimented their school and left. He would have left on a stretcher had he tried to pull anything like what we hear in Beardy's stories. No disrespect to Bruce as he was an excellent martial artist, he taught everyone and made some great movies. But legend is legend and reality is something else.

Have you any idea the sort of numbskulls that actually challenged him after he became famous ? All you had to do would be to act like a know-it-all jerk on the film set, or jump over the wall into his house compound and call him a coward. What sort of bragging rights would those be ? "Saving face" is a thing in traditional martial arts. You are not just an individual doing your own thing without self-restraint. Such characters are generally frowned upon in the martial arts community. Maturity includes the humility to not have to always prove you are the fastest gunslinger in the west. In chinese culture, if someone asked you if you knew kungfu, we'd say "a little bit". There is no end in learning the art. 'Mastery' is a relative term. Fluidity means you are always changing, always learning. Whether after we have defeated others or after we ourselves get defeated. It means little if our minds are still stuck at that particular moment. The mind of a growing artist is fluid. Gobbling so much 'memberries" about a dead celebrity isn't really that healthy for anyone. Getting stuck in stories can often prevent us from fully attending to the present reality.

Jim Kelly was a little more involved in Enter the dragon than you might think. He was sought out originally cast for the role of Roper. John Saxon being one of the Bruce Lee students and an actor was supposed to play the roll of Williams. Whether or not those were the names of the role or whether they were switched I don’t know but that’s how it was originally. John Saxon didn’t want to be killed off in the movie so the roles were switched. I know this because I saw an interview with John Saxon and he said it himself.

Saxon was under the impression that he was going to be the star, and Jim Kelly was a last second replacement after Rockne Tarkington pulled out. The role was probably changed to fit Jim Kelly as the character was originally supposed to be inspired by Shaft.

Beerdy's support of Bruce as a real martial artist and fighter is great. But at times it's a bit too much of the "saint Bruce" narrative. If you really look at Bruce's fighting techniques as told by his close friends and sparring partners, it's not unlike what we have in MMA today. Bruce did go to different dojos to spar, but I dont think he did this often.

@@gagetaylor192 this is another huge myth. Just because boxing lost credibility and the reality that most fights go to ground and involve kicks, that's what made wrestling get incorporated to boxing and mu Thai to get MMA. I did JKD way back in its early days, there was as much focus on wrestling and grappling as you see in any Bruce Lee film or history. About zero MMA guys say they have a background in JKD either. It's just coincidental that JKD was mixing martial arts. Ground game was about kicking people away if you were down and getting back up. Adding weapons and also disarming weapons from in front and from behind was more that most people have no idea of in JKD being adaptive for as many situations.

that's a good point, how could Bruce Lee travel around the country when he had a wife, kids, and schools to run? He did have financial issues as his only income was Martial Arts, and he was charging his students $1,000 a lesson. So he made his challenges to show up at his dojo in which case Wong Jack Man did and lost.

Wrong. Outrageous to say that he charged a rate that Hollywood stars could not have afforded. And Wong Jack Man and Bruce Lee agreed it was a draw, after the former stumbled backwards, and onto the ground, following 11 super-arduous minutes, and Lee violated the agreement, claimed he won, and because of his performance, abandoned Wing Chung, and adapted Kung Fu into Jeet Kune Do.

Let me explain something here for a minute. I did live back and then years, and I definitely did go through the Kung Fu, karate.Taekwondo, Juju and more back in them years. A lot of us back then we really did appreciate Bruce Lee and when he passed away it was a sad of time as someone like that could die that easily so quickly. And of course there were many rumors going around. But the key point in here us that I am going to relay is. I seen Bruce Lee on the TV that he stated he went around investigating different types of karate different things and he was going to incorporate these certain things in to his way of doing it. And that's how he was going to teach his style and I seen him say it on TV. so you ain't the all for end on knowing about Bruce Lee. 6 months in and you already know everything I'm impressed not. That's the trouble you young people. you think you found America.
