For someone who started the way you did, joining the Lee wave after "Dragon, The Bruce Lee story" , you do some good work. As a fourth grader, I attended the "Enter the Dragon" premiere month in August of 73. The line went down and around the block past where "The Godfather" was showing. "Way of the Dragon" premiere August fourth of 74. Block long 8am line. Theater opened at 9. Warner Bros. saturated the market with his image. He was bigger than James Bond and the Planet of the Apes franchise which the studio had hoped. This was how much this man's work was revered. Ive seen the documentaries and the post Lee imitators which (you're right) Bruce Lee , The man, the myth, was the best work with full house audiences to prove it in those days. Now Ang Lee wants to approach sacred ground with his son in the role. Its like trying to get Superman right after Chris Reeve of 1978. Nepotism makes me nervous. Lee was not Shaw Bros. myth. He was a dedicated flawed human being who created a persona on film despite the naysayers constantly in his ear and the pain in his back which was his albatross. I hope Ang has an inspired script and aims for humanity without studio interference. James Coburn said that the flaw he saw with "Enter the Dragon" was that what the character was fighting for wasn't big enough. The cause should have matched fighting powers by fighting for principle as opposed to cracking a dope and woman trafficker in the south china sea. It was 1973. Lee had to emerge in a familiar genre. Thats funny considering Coburn axed a principled script called "The Silent Flute". I hope this treatment reaches above all that.

Despite it's short comings, I enjoyed the personal aspects of his life as much as the fight sequences that linked each chapter. Lee's hit movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon does the same thing riffing on the classic Taiwanese Wushu movie, a Touch of Zen, 1971. It's not going to be easy for Ang Lee to make this movie, because Bruce Lee's movies are not genre movies, they are more like experimental action Wuxia and Auteur movies, and his life story is chequered straddling American individualism and paradoxically anti-individualism Daoism and Buddhism. It could be amazing or trash. LOL

My favorite Bruce Lee biopic is Bruce Lee My Brother played by Aarif Rahman. It portrays a young Bruce Lee in Hong Kong and looks eerily similar to a young Bruce. Mind you everyone has the perception of the Bruce Lee when he became an American movie star, with the physique and yelling, but Aarif Rahman pulls off what Bruce looked like in his youth. The movie has almost no fighting and it's actually refreshing to me. The story being told by his brother and sister gives it even more credibility. Lee instructed/tutored some of the best of his era (Norris, Joe Lewis ad infinitum). They sought him out. I trained in Tae Kwon Do for several years, so I'm not a complete neophyte. I'll never understand why, simply because he wasn't a competitive, circuit fighter, so many people question his legitimacy. I believe he left Hong Kong around age 16 (born in San Francisco), moved to Washington state to live with his uncle, and majored in philosophy at some university (didn't finish). Forget his movies (editing can distort reality), just watching his myriad film clips, particularly his performance/demonstrations at the 1967 Long Beach Karate (?) Bruce Lee made a mark on the world and he will never be forgotten. There are do many people that try to discredit him as a martial artist. Those that knew him and learnt from Bruce Lee would know the most. I listen to them. Even Bruce Lee's Younger brother did not have much to do with Bruce Lee at all. The actor that played Freddie Mercury did not need to sing like Freddy to play bohemian rhapsody.

I had the good fortune to train with Jerry Poteet, the fellow who trained Jason Scott Lee for his role in Dragon; the Bruce Lee Story. I trained with him a few years before the movie came out and Jerry was pretty open about who Bruce Lee was, and what kind of person he was. Suffice it to say that he was just as excellent and just as flawed as any other person, with a lot of good in his character, as well as some bad. I really doubt that any movie that's influenced by family members, or ardent fans, is going to capture the contradictions that defined him as a person. Too many people want to to idolize him rather than recognize that he was simply a supremely talented person with all the character flaws that one would expect from someone extremely concerned with excellence, status, and his public perception.

Ang Lee, on the strength of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would be an excellent choice. Dont know much about Mason Lee but I am sure Ang Lee knows what he is doing. Seen several past biopics. Have to say Danny Chan of the Legend of Bruce Lee and Ip Man 4 has been the most impressive I have seen in the role of Bruce Lee. Be Water is also a good watch. Yes, an accurate story of Bruce Lee would be something to look forward too.

Since Ang Lee will be directing the film, it might just be the one film about Bruce where this actor Mason Lee can pull it off and the movie be a success. Ang Lee is a great director and visionary, that's part of it. The other thing is that I'm sure he chose Mason Lee for some particular purpose, and not because they are related. For some reason, looking at that pic of Mason Lee in the white shirt sends some kind of positive vibe about Bruce that I can see on his face. I just have a good feeling about this particular project. 🤗

His philosophy ranks up with all of the philosophers of our time. He was a thinking man and put his ideas to use in his discipline and . With new ideas comes great opposition. I'm looking forward to this movie and as you said I hope they do it Justice I'm pretty sure it'll be good Bruce Lee deserves a movie and so does his fans.

I was stationed in Korea when that came to our base theater, and I took a group of my younger troops to see it. Nice shout-out about Ang Lee's TuiSho movie. As someone that lived in China for a fair amount of time the movie rings so true as someone sitting between two cultures not quite knowing how they fit in. I don't think there's anyone that could really capture a movie of that as well as Ang Lee. Just a sideways recommendation of another movie of his that really feels in the same interesting headspace is eat drink Man woman. It's more of a family movie but those kind of aspects are deep within and could truly tell good Bruce Lee story I think.

Mike Moh portrayal of Bruce Lee in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” was fantastic, the best in my opinion. Looks, accent, mannerism spot on. Quentin Tarantino's writing is what made Bruce Lee look like an arrogant buffoon. Tarantino said the scene serves a more direct purpose. To make a case for Brad Pitts character, Cliff's own killer capabilities which would come into play later in the movie vs the Manson Family. Tarantino could've made Brad Pitts character look tough with out the mockery.

That movie was even less accurate about Bruce than Dragon was. And coincidentally, Dragon’s reasoning for over glorifying Bruce was to serve a purpose in scenes (the director was wanting to make a Bruce Lee movie while making a movie about Bruce, so heavy metaphor usage occurred). Quentin is just a hater and a hack.

Thank you for mentioning Pushing Hands the movie. This movie brought back my old memories when i first came to the United States from Cambodia in the late 80s. When I first arrived in the US in late 80s I felt like they caveman in a modern city when everything was completely different like the language, people & culture, food, weather, shelter ( I didn’t know how to use shower, toilet, stove…etc), schooling and everything else. Was 180 degrees from what I had known from the jungle to f Cambodia. For the first 5 years was really struggled how to find food, used a public transportations, how to communicate with people, no friends… Can you guys imagine? The man in this movie was much better off then me because he has a son, China town and the whole Chinese community to back him off.
