What REALLY Happened When Bolo CHALLENGED Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee versus Bolo is the fight that everyone really wanted to see in Enter The Dragon, and right as it almost happened, it didn't.
But there's a few stories floating around saying that maybe Bruce Lee and Bolo got into a few scraps behind the scenes, and maybe those real fights off camera had something to do with why we didn't see a Bolo versus Bruce Lee fight in "Enter the Dragon."
So let's talk about what REALLY HAPPENED when Bolo Yeung challenged Bruce Lee.

For those of you who don’t know, Bolo Yeung is still alive and well as of late 2019, just before the Covid pandemic sltarted. He lives in my city and I used to see him walking down the street in my hood. He is not as buff as he was, but still very muscular for someone in his 80’s. A friend of mine who also lives in my area mentioned that he still works out at our local LA Fitness. In fact this friend ran into Bolo a few times at this gym and he even asked my friend to spot him. By all accounts, he is a very reserved and quiet person and not like the character on screen. Maybe someday if I meet him again, I will ask him if he and Lee really fought off screen.

Since he was so attracted to fame, movies, acting, he kinda seemed like a show-off, not some serious martial artist who keeps to himself and who does not seek other peoples amazement of what he does. Yes, he didnt knew to fight, and reason why he was fast, from what i can conclude, is that he mostly trained like 3-4 basic attacks, that are most effective, until he mastered them, while other people train 10 or more attacks and they are average in them.

I recall in an interview that one of his personal desires and plans was to straighten out those myths once he established himself and tell his own true story through future movies had he not died so young. *Thanks for your valid points!

Hey Man I didn’t get your name, but thanks to Goldenbell Training for this commentary about the million dollar question: Why Bruce and Bolo didn’t fight in ETD. I remember literal intense excitement and anticipation when watching ETD in the theater for the first time! While I was overwhelmingly excited and satisfied with what was Bruce Lee’s overall best performance (my opinion); my only disappointment was that missing fight and I knew then like I still know these days that I wasn’t the only person on the planet who felt that way. I’m still not really sure about a lot of what’s true or not concerning Bruce because there’s megatons of rumors about His life personally and professionally, but thanks for your commentary because it made a little more sense than what I’ve heard in quite some time. I learned some new info and recalled info that I heard before or forgot. If Bruce hadn’t died so young and early, I’d still be looking for that fight with Bolo in latter movies because I surely believe that He had big expectations and plans due after the phenomenal success of Enter The Dragon, (this title interprets that He really was just getting started)! So in closing, thanks again for such great commentary! 🥋

@@dimpleface2163 That's what I thought. I can't really picture either of them fighting each other, at least not with any intended malice or desire to hurt each other. Maybe a private light sparring session or exchange of techniques, but that's all I can imagine being possible. Also, I don't think Bruce was the kind of guy to judge Bolo as only a bodybuilder. I don't think he was one to say someone was or wasn't a "real" martial artist. I think of Bruce as a guy who was a doer, not a talker in the sense that if he disagreed with someone's assertions, he wouldn't just talk about them to discredit them like say Steven Seagal would. I always got that same sense of character from Bolo as well. I never really took him as someone with a big ego. I've never met either of these men obviously, but there's just some people who display their strength of character in such a way that you can kind of infer what they were and/or are probably like just from what you have seen of them, you know? I don't claim to be right in my assessments, but I do think both Bruce and Bolo can kind of be seen outwardly for their noble aspects.

Great video ! I’ve been teaching kung fu for 36 years. Beerdys videos are definitely made up stories. I grew up and i saw ENTER THE DRAGON at the theatre. The movies are exactly that. Bruce was a legitimate legend in the martial Arts community when he set his mind and body free of all styles/systems. Bruce would have destroyed most people then and now. His speed was the difference.

Being the only asian kid in my small town in Texas, Bruce Lee was automatically assigned to me by friends. Something I wore with pride lol. All my life I viewed Bruce as this revered mythical being. I watched Enter the Dragon when it was first released and a lot of people were disappointed that Bruce did not fight Bolo. The whole point of Enter the Dragon was for Hollywood to capitalize on Bruce's international stardom from the other movies (especially from Way of the Dragon with C.Norris ) that were very successful. Yes, he was not a household name, he would later on become more famous after his death, but Hollywood did recognize if they wanted to make a hit, with a cinematic martial arts film in the US, they needed Bruce Lee. They could of went to dozens of other actors, however Bruce Lee would bring them real experience and legitimacy to the movie based on his prior success and reputation he already acquired. I have one comment about this movie, how there is a major plot glitch: while you have just cleared up for me why Bolo didn't fight Lee's character -- something I've always wondered about -- I find myself perplexed about why Han's "personal guard (his daughters, as he says) completely disappeared from any of the final fight scenes. I always thought they should have been at play throwing darts at Lee's character while he fights others. What do you think? Was this a missed opportunity and a failure to develop an interesting plot line, or what? I always end up thinking about crazy ideas like this. Your video really got me going, so thanks again!

Bruce was ahead of his time by decades. He combined the best that was available at the time. Combined Western boxing with traditional martial arts, etc. Open to any style and method, he traveled around meeting and sharing with with other martial artists. He died in 1973, 50 years ago now. If still still alive he'd be 83 today. I hate it how fools say he wouldn't win in an MMA match. First he wasn't into sports fights as he personally stated. Although he did help many others like Chuck Norris and Joe Lewis who dominated the fighting sports at the time. You can say Bruce invented MMA even. He certainly was the inspiration for many MMA fighters as they attest to themselves. The egos attacking Bruce. Seen many of them on YT (not talking of Goldenbell Training here). Like how he figured out how do to feints, how to move without showing a tell. That he figured out how to strike with a direct motion with out body windup, but add body twist at end just before the strike, etc. Not to say he necessarily invented it all. He studied fencing to learn about the fine arts of feints. Got a lot from Joe Louis's books. One was his favorite. In my profession, I'm considered an expert. I don't call my self that, but it's what people tell me. I'm constantly getting after it, I dedicate myself to it. Like Bruce did, I read a lot, see what others are doing, experiment, learn. I know though, there are better people than me out there. That's just the way it goes. Could I be the best in the world? Maybe.
