BMW E30 325I / 325IS: How to replace the Crank Position Sensor
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video, I demonstrate how to replace the crank position sensor in my 1988 BMW 325IS. This procedure covers 325i and 325IS models from 1987-1992 - Motronic 1.1 - 1.3.

Thanks for this! Going to do this on my car tonight.
it might be easier to change the sensor working from the bottom of car. taking so many parts out is just too troublesome
Was doing timing belt on my 1987 BMW 325ic and the CPS wire broke. Gave vin to parts supplier and the replacement CPS has a pigtail at the end and not a plug that goes back into the engine loom. Explained to supplier but had no answer. Thoughts?
What power tool are you using? It seems so much easier than having to do everything with my own hand power

I exclusively Milwaukee Tool cordless ratchets, impacts, etc and I use a variety of benchtop tools from various other manufacturers. Would you be interested in a video covering the tools I use?
Great video! This was really helpful in replacing my CPS yesterday. When working on it, I realized the sensor right next to the CPS (closest to the engine) had a cut wire - do you know what sensor this is? I've been searching through the Bentley manual but have been unable to find it

I suspect you are looking at the wires running to air condition clutch. They follow the crank position sensor wiring around the front od the engine. I hope that helps.

@@Rurik_JustCruzn Thank you for the reply! It turns out some aftermarket spark plugs have an induction wire that loops around one of the spark plug wires and connects next to the CPS sensor.

@@paulclancy7128 where'd you find this info? I've been searching all through the Bentley manual and no luck. So it's only used if you use the aftermarket spark plugs? Is yours just dangling?

@@supermansteve32 There was some old BMW forum post for a couple years ago where I found this out - sorry, don't know the specific link. From memory in the Bentley manual there is a small paragraph tucked away on the upper right side of the page about CPS where it mentions that some models might have an extra sensor. I had to replace my spark plugs so I ended up plugging it in - can't say I've noticed a huge difference in fuel economy, but at least it's in.
what connection is next to that crank sensor connection on the bracket
@laidback93

That is the connection for the pulse sensor coming off the number 6 spark plug wire
Great video! So with a bad cps you didn't get any spark at all? I guess the computer wasn't activating the coil...is that correct?

Correct
Nope, I'm not doing that. 😂 Zip ties to the rescue!

Wise decision. Thanks for watching
i watched it again. what is the other cable that runs parallel in the housing of the crank sensor cable?
@NortheastVintage

That’s the sensor from the spark plug cable.
@selespeed3

@@NortheastVintage mine doesn't run that way. it goes straight across on top. This prevents any untoward scratching with any metalic part
Will this be the same for a 1985 325ES??

A 1985 325es uses a different sensor located on the driver's side of the transmission bell housing.

@@Rurik_JustCruzn what’s that sensor called and how does it look?
If it is broken dan you have no fire on the bougie and no fuel pomp working
I though a bad crank starter didnt turn on the fuel pump either

No, it’s for timing

Correct. No fuel pump and no spark.
