    one more tip, only move the crank in the normal running direction (clockwise) and also there is an easy way to check which cylinder can be adjustet at the moment. you want to turn the engine until on one cylinder BOTH valves are fully opened. so the pointy think from the camshafts are both pointed towards the rocker. then just use the very simple formula: 7-[the cylinder which valves are open] = [the cylinder you can adjust]

    Also you need to inspect the contact spot of the eccentric washer surface by the valve, because the probe surface, can compensate the clearance between valve and frayed of eccentric washer surface while adjusting and after pulling the probe, the clearance will not be proper. In this case you might to need to replace the old eccentric washer.

    My question is how can you see the lobe if its down. It was hard to see. Does the lobe have to be pointing exactly straight down. Cause as I said, its hard to tell. 2nd which nobody says each one of the valves has 2 that you have to do. So 12 valves are needed to be adjusted ? And does it matter which valve you start with ? I know the sequence 153624 I'm talking about the top or bottom do you start with ? Thanks

  • @E30Source

    Its possible if there is oil on the business end of the plug, inside the cylinder, you have mechanical engine issues. (broken or worn piston ring(s), hole in piston, excessively worn valve guide and or seal...) but, I would say that since the car is so old unless it is giving you a significant misfire, don't worry about it.

    If you can change the spark plug leads, that's sometimes useful. Make sure the plugs have got the right gap too if you can, I've had a car misfire badly in the past and it took me a long time to find out what it was. Turned out I dropped one of the spark plugs on the concrete before I put them in and I never noticed that the gap got screwed up on impact, made a huge difference when I put that right.

    Does the intake valve and exhaust valve open and close at the same time ? i mean if the lobe is pointing downwards in cylinder 1 , does this mean i can adjust both the intake and exhaust valves ? or is there a separate lobe on the camshaft for intake valve and exhaust valve ? sorry , i'm about to do this for the first time , still didn't have a look inside .. want to know what to expect . And to get TDC on each cylinder , can i lift the back of the car and just simply rotate the wheel backwards and forewards in gear to get the TDC position for each cylinder ?

  • @E30Source

    @E30Source

    9 жыл бұрын

    They do not open at the same time, hence why intake lets air in, and exhaust, lets air out. Just do one at a time, you don't have to go in firing order (153624), but its recommended and it makes doing the job easier. If your car is equipped with a LSD (limited slip differential), you cant rotate the wheels like that to turn the engine. I like to do it with a big wrench. If I just confused you further, watch this video- kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmR8maWJYrSyqKQ.html He did that on a toyota I believe but the way he explains it is good, but a E30 is on a completely different spec. I don't agree with his pushing of the car, but thats his choice.

    E30Source Thanks for the fast reply ... yeah using a wrench would be easier .. but the problem is that i don't have one that would fit in there ... my car does not have LSD ..and it has a manual transmission.. so lifting one side of the car and rotating one rear wheel should do the job ... i think .... your videos are really great... good walkthrough .. good quality .. very helpful ( though my car is an e34 .. but with an m20 engine ) any plans on making a detailed DIY on how to replace the timing belt ?

    Check the timing belt and for fluid leaks like coolant. Rebuild the engine while it is out.

    The torque specs for the valve cover is actually really low like 15- 20ft/lbs I think but I would check online, that's all you have to torque.

    E30Source I did the valve adjustment according to a BMW Manual (0.25 mm clearance). It makes even more noise, but it seems to start better (still a crappy idle - maybe the injectors). When i did the adjustment, the clearance was VERY tight. Anyway, i'm going to a BMW dealer tomorow (clearance of my wallet will be very tight !).

    surelytempting It sounds like the idle is higher and it still is dieseling a little bit. I'd try re-adjusting, and two quick questions, what oil are you using? And, did you replace the breather hose running from the valve cover to the idle control valve? This hose is called the PCV hose and it gets clogged normally and starts to make it run like a diesel.

    E30Source thanks for the reply! Using some generic 20w50 and breather hose is about 4 months new. Just got it smogged after a new cat was installed and NOx is through the roof and 1.1%O2 coming through... Could huge vacuum leak be causing some of the "dieseling"?

  • @E30Source

    @E30Source

    Spray around the engine bay to see if there is a vacuum leak and if the idle changes, there is your leak.

    This video is wrong he isn't adjusting them right now is he teaching or showing you all the right way! I learned it the hard way and by calling catuned in California there are 12 valves 6 for I take and 6 for exhaust the intake is supposed to b adjusted with a 7 feeler gauge not a 10 or 0.25 and the exhaust with a 8 you can't adjust them all as a 10 it won't sound right it's wrong take this video down and make a proper one a detailed one with no shortcuts if you going to do something do it full and right
