the song is about a ritual called "sin-eating" During the middle ages some people (usually lower class farmers and peasants) would eat something of a recently deceased person. The belief was that by eating the bread en drink the beer from the body, the sins of the deceased would then be transferred to the person eating. These people would only get paid a few coins and were looked upon as cursed, which is why everyone looks at her in disgust as she is entering the church and avoiding eye contact when she leaves.
