I always enjoy your detailed analysis and especially so with your Blackbriar videos. I believe Zora writes most of teh lyrics and she works with a one or two of the other band members on the instrumentation and arrangement. Love that you caught the sin eaters references in the lyrics and video. Never widespread but not uncommon in the 1700 and 1800s Europe. If a person died unexpectedly and before they could receive last rites and be absolved of their sins a family would hire a sin eater. The family would place bread and drink on the corpse to absorb the sins and then the sin eater would eat the bread and drink some ale or wine to take on the sins of the deceased. As one could imagine these people were often social outcasts. I think Zora has taken this imagery to explore being in a obsessive relationship with someone that you know is not good for you yet you willingly "take on their sins". When you love someone who is an outcast and your family and friends distance themselves from you. From the lyrics: "To feast on your lies Your wickedness and spite Insignificant misdeeds Or horrible crimes I wouldn't think twice And make them all mine" and "I'll carry your sins But who will carry mine? Who? Who will carry mine?" and "No one can even look me in the eye Everybody is flinching away from me As I pass by" Can't wait for the next single and the whole album this fall.

Yeah, this is what I suspected. I'm sure everyone has a role in the composition, but it usually comes down to one or two main writers. I'm not even sure where I learned about the Sin Eater thing. It just emerged from the foggy recesses of my memory. 😆😆

7:30 : As far as I know, every Blackbriar song begins with a writing process on Zora's part. She is an avid reader, and when she finds inspiring ideas in her reading, she turns them into lyrics. Then she composes and sings the main melodies for her lyrics, after which the drummer and co-founder of the band creates the basis for the musical arrangement. And each member finalizes the whole thing. (I'm not saying it's exactly like that, I've just read and listened to some interviews and am making assumptions). But this creative process is for me the best thing about Blackbriar that makes their songs exceptional! And it's kind of the opposite of the usual creative process in metal: start with guitar riffs, then add gibberish vocals, then create lyrics...

Yeah I had the impression that Rene (drummer) has a lot to do with it. But I wasn't sure. I actually mentioned it in the video, but was so uncertain that I cut it out. Thanks for the info!

Their producer is Joost van den Broek, also known for producing bands such as Epica. He's a top notch producer.

Yes, I can't say what I like best about Blackbriar: the lyrics? Zora's voice? Her technique? Her power? The orchestration ? The dozens of musical details ? Zora's backing vocals ? The arrangements ? The visuals ? The cinematography ? Zora's acting ? the winks in the staging (if I followed correctly, the dead guy is the former bass player and the new one arrives in the next shot) ? the emotion that overwhelms us and that I'm sure is exactly what Zora wanted to share with us ? (For me, she's a hypersensitive genius with a voice from another galaxy, brighter and more beautiful !) Their total investment and attention to every detail ? Zora's gift for finding the beauty hidden in the dark corners of humans and revealing it to us? The historical consistency in all their videos and lyrics ? And then the fact that out of 33 tracks, 30 are my favourites, absolute masterpieces... (It's just crazy!). Yes, ok, I'm a fan, but still: objectively... this band is amazing!

Wow, you summed up absolutely everything! I'm glad you recognized all those wonderful things. Blackbriar is my favorite band. When I think of why I like them, I just think of so many reasons lol. I too think that the reason everything is such high quality art, is because of Zora's artistic sensibilities (obviously other people are involved). It always amazes me that there is more hidden meaning than I think. I agree that they are a young band that not only has so many songs already, but all of them are gone. I'm excited for A Dark Euphony, because that's 10 more songs! They always release songs frequently enough too!

@@Hffhjjhh yes! The Blackbriar grows towards the sun, gains more and more spines and evolves towards its maturity. And A Dar Euphony sounds like a giant step! For me, it is the number 1 in the world that is getting even better! 🙏🤩

Fantastic analysis, so informative! I've heard people say about Nightwish that they pay great attention to the frequency range, making sure there's proper space for (e.g.) vocals, but I now understand better what was meant by that. BTW I wouldn't say Blackbriar are very big - they've only recently got a record deal - but although they are finally making their mark I totally agree they should be bigger! And to do my bit, I've preordered the forthcoming album...

From my interpretation, the songs with witches (like Weakness and Lust) explore the way that culture has historically feared and villified female power and independence. Zora is reclaiming that power and turning the stereotypes against themselves. Lilith Be Gone is a great example of this.

Totally agree. I'd say at least half their songs have an anti-patriarchy message, but that is filtered through the genre of "fractured fairytales" so it never feels preachy. What drew me in was Zora's voice, what captured me was the combo of lyrics and music. And _Lilith_ _Be_ _Gone_ is still my favourite of their songs!
