American Werewolf In London has, overall, the best transformation. The acting sells it. The final wolf is terrifying... it's not really a wolf, but a nightmarish wolf werebeast. I also love how at the end of the film, the nurse calls to David as the creature that she loves him one last time and the puppet's eyes very slightly soften for a moment, as if he understands.

And then he lunges. Was he lunging because he wanted the police to shoot him and put him out of his misery? Because he wanted to protect Alex? Or was he lunging because he had finally lost his last bit of humanity and really would have killed Alex?

American Werewolf is the definitive werewolf movie. I first saw it in a small cinema on Oxford street, when I was a student in London. It was a late night showing, and on the way home I had to take the underground from Tottenham Court tube station......where the movie was actually filmed. I was alone on the platform listening to the weird booming noises from the distant trains, when some bastard in the maze of tunnels started howling like a wolf....best movie night ever👍

I feel like the werewolf transformation of the Shapeshifters in Love Death Robots is an honorable mention too. They transform really quick, but it looks cool and they have one of the best werewolf designs for the final form. Also, the character fighting the other werewolf while half transformed was really good. Edit: typo

Very true!
It's difficult to explain to younger film fans the impact the transformation scene in American werewolf in London had on audiences of the time, no CGI all done with practical in camera effects, the realism and the actors portrayal of utter terror at what was happening to him puts this at the top of the list, IMHO it has never been bettered.
I think the transformation scene in the 2010 remake of the Wolfman deserves some attention. It pays homage to not just the original but other werewolves who go through the pain from changing. The CGI gives the more unique vibe of morphing into a wolflike man beast. As for TV shows, I think the Werewolf TV series deserves some attention. It's like the Incredible Hulk meets the Wolfman.

@@damienthetexasian6827 I was just thinking of the Werewolf TV series. I'm 47, so I was a kid in the 80's and remember the series very well. I would watch it every week. A few years back I tried seeing if it was ever released on DVD or remastered or something, but it never happened. If I remember correctly, I think that there were a few companies fighting for, or at least claiming, the rights to the series so it didn't look very promising that it would be released again. To me the best werewolf transformation is from an episode of Love Death & Robots, called Shape-shifters, the sound design and the cgi are amazing, plus the designs of the actual wolf forms are unique to each werewolf character, the Change is reminiscent of the one from Van Helsing, but executed so much better (I think because it's more modern, ILM did a great job back in the day). Another one i like is the Wolfman (Benicio Del Toro), at least it should have been an honorable mention imo.

I’m surprised you didn’t include (or mention) The Wolf Man (2010) with Benecio Del Toro. That scene in the asylum when he transforms in front of all the gentlemen of society is superb. Also, the werewolves in this film are truly savage, brutal and terrifying.

1:57 drinking from the paw print of the werewolf is actually an old legend in europe. it appears in many different tales, basically if you drink from any animals paw print you will become it. it's actually so cool that they included it since most movies about werewolves don't bother with that
@jeykey7140
3 ай бұрын
True, I was surprised to hear "That's a new one", I've heard that when I was a kid. That and wearing a skin of a wolf under full moon while eating some herbs ritual...
I think part of the reason that Werewolves don’t transform so often in Hemlock Grove is because- at the risk of stating the obvious- like almost every Werewolf Transformation ever, it puts the Werewolf in mortal agony. And in the case of Hemlock Grove it may be worse than most- every part of them appears to be torn apart from the inside. As cool as Shapeshifting is, if you had to undergo so much pain I don’t think most humans can even imagine it, I would avoid using it as much as I could.
1:59 I have heard of the drinking water from a werewolf’s footprint around 20 years ago. It’s a really old part of the mythos
To be fair, there's loads of more material being made on vampires than Werewolves in modern media, so it makes sense tor this channel to cover it more frequently. On the drinking water from a werewolf's pawprint to become a werewolf: I read about that one years ago, and it always struck me as a pretty odd folklore detail, and very unusual to see that someone would include it, but nonetheless it's a nice lore drop.
During the Remake of Fright Night, anybody else feel like they were being robbed when Evil Ed didn't turn into a wolf? *Raises hand*. Also American Werewolf in London is and always will be my favorite Werewolf movie (The best if you ask me) , and i was actually impressed seeing the unused footage. Impressive to this day. I still get chills to this day hearing that werewolf howl. ty for the upload. OH and maybe a shout out for SILVER BULLET and the creepy preacher, "You meddling little Shit!" that line got to me, tch tch preach such language. Ahhh still classic gold. Really feel like American Werewolf in London should have been #1. It's iconic and set the groundwork for almost every other entry on this list.
American werewolf was definitely the one that sticks with you, the howling close 2nd for how they did the transaction. Blood and chocolate has a very different take on how werewolves change and they look like wolfs . Bitten is another TV show with werewolves in it that's pretty interesting one to watch. Ginger snaps is a cult classic they did two more films but the first is by far the best.
Loved the list! For me, Lupin’s transformation from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is another great example. While the transformation happens rather fast, it still haunts me until today & I think, especially for a non-horror film, the werewolf is pretty frightening! :)
Your videos are great and thanks for the Vampire World recommendation, loved the premise when you mentioned them in one of your earlier videos so bought the books, just started the third book now and am loving them, Jaden is cool AF, they should make a TV show or movies based on these novels.
You can't talk about werewolf transformations and not talk about late phases. Everything about that movie rocks. If you haven't seen it I recommend it with my soul
I love Ginger Snaps! For me it's more about mental transformation rather than physical. I didn't expect this movie to be so sad and depressing. I don't usually cry that easy but the end just left me in tears. Such a great and underrated movie.
American Werewolf in London will pretty much always be the top. Now me personally the scene from Underworld where Raze turned into a lycan when he was fighting the vampire guy with the whips is my all-time favorite transformation scene.
Nothing is going to beat the transformation in An American Werewolf in London. I still prefer Fright Night as a movie. Possibly my favorite.

"we need to do more werewolf videos" Adverts book about vampires 🤣
The werewolf transformation of Late Phases is also awesome.... Please do a video on the werewolves of Late Phases
I'm almost 40 and American werewolf in London transformation still creeps me out.
An American Werewolf In London not only has the best werewolf transformation, but the best longevity of said transformation. Some transformations hold up for a decent amount of time, most fall flat pretty quick, but that one is STILL scaring the shit out of people.
I'm a big fan of the transformations in Van Helsing. I know a lot of people prefer practical effects but the CGI was really neat in my opinion. The way the brother starts crawling across the walls while he's transforming was awesome. And Hugh Jackman's pure black werewolf was amazing.
In your top 5 strongest werewolves you completely overlooked 1989’s Werewolf TV series Immortal and only vulnerable to silver, fire and other werewolves And the transformations (especially Chuck Connor’s) was amazing

I loved you included GingerSnaps that was such a cool werewolf movie.
Great Breakdowns
If you make another one of these videos, you should include the transformation from Monster Squad. It's good for a few reasons. First, it's done really quick and is like a camera trick where he gets further transformed each time he's concealed behind the phone booth door. Second, it's played by Jon Gries aka Uncle Rico. Third, it's just kinda intense. This is supposed to be a kid's movie and you got this guy freaking out yelling into a phone telling this cop that someone is going to kill his son. His voice starts getting more animalistic as he's yelling into the phone while he's spitting into the receiver. Fourth, it seems to be all practical effects.

i am glad to see that I'm not the only one thinking that wolves are a lazy type of transformation. The Howling was always a favorite of mine, but I also enjoyed American Werewolf in London, The Wolfman, and the several others mentioned here. I think it's because Eddie relished his transformation and what he was. There was no anguish or fighting against the creature, he fully embraced it, and that grin that ran well into the transformation was always a little unsettling to me. If anyone remembers the Incredible Hulk series from the 70s, there's an episode where there's a second, evil Hulk. The grin on his face as he transformed added to the level of fright in a similar manner.
The transformation from The Howling is one of the creepiest, the way the mouth turns into a creep smile is just... **shudders**

American Werewolf is the best transformation to my mind, but The Howling werewolves are definitely the scariest (specifically Eddie Quist). The transformed American Werewolf I found a little disappointing and Karen White's werewolf was ridiculous. Good and bad on both sides.

I agree- The Howling is my favorite "look" of a werewolf, followed by Dog Soldiers. An American Werewolf in London is the best transformation, but bipeds are supremes to me.
Fun Fact: Elmer Bernstein who composed the music for An American Werewolf in London, actually wrote and composed a score for the transformation scene known as 'Metamorphosis' but John Landis opted for the song 'Blue Moon' instead. Sometime later, Landis would call up Bernstein to do a reworked version of the score for Michael Jackson's Thriller video.
Honestly the werewolf transformations in Skyrim are underrated in my opinion. Yes they are quick, but give this cool super natural magic vibe, great looks on how the body changes, great sound effects, and the end form looks amazing considering when the game came out. 💯

Best werewolf transformation of all time hands down in movie cinema. Is American Werewolf in London. The best ever.
American werewolf after 40 plus years, is still the best transformation ever.
The Howling has my blue ribbon vote!!! Good video.
Idk man, no cgi is impressive I'm all on board But...the transformation in vanhelsing is just phenomenal, the skin ripping and tearing, it just sheds off like a snake at a certain point. The fact that the face actually transforms into the werewolf face is to perfect, the design of the actual werewolf is beautifully done and is what most people imagine when thinking about them, same goes for the Dracula transformation, just so visceral and not scared to get bloody or hairy, i know it's cgi and for most that's a turn off but I'm just in awe at how we see all of it, the complete transformation to and from.
Silver Bullet takes the cake in my book. The transformation/practical effects are not as brilliant as Werewolf in London, but the film itself is much more terrifying. The eerie musical score and brutal kill scenes, Silver Bullet stands out as one-of-the-most scary werewolf films to date.
nice analysis
Def not a coincidence, Eli Roth is old enough to remember Company of Wovles, and the imagery of that box cover lives with every 80s horror kid

The Howling transformation is the most creepy one.I watched it with my older brother when i was 9 and it took a long time before i was able to sleep normally again.Thx Ramon
They're all awesome
The Howling is the best one for me personally. One of the later films had a crazy transformation where the guy basically turned to goop before becoming the werewolf. It was nasty but very inventive!
Actually, that "drink water from a wolf's footstep" is not a new one. That is in folklore of many nations since medieval times. One of nice details during transformation was in Wolfman (2010). When Benicio Del Torro starts transforming for the first time in that crypt and when he looks into his hand and sees the ring falling out of his finger because of his hand deforming. At the same scene, when he realizes smth is happening, he turns in confusion and his rifle gets stuck on a door, like a dog carrying a stick wider than the door he wants to pass through in its mouth and suddenly is shocked by realization he cannot go through for "reasons unknown"...
I really don't get the ppl who says the howling transformation is better than an American werewolf in london. AWIL won a richly deserved oscar for best make up and it's the first best make up award a movie gets, that's how good it was. The Howling wasn't even nominated.
I love your video
Well, I think the transformations in that strangely 'forgotten' TV series WEREWOLF were pretty impressive. Especially the one where Chuck Connors transforms and then, almost as an afterthought, pulls part of his human face off and eats it, like a snack.
Thank you for including Ginger Snaps in the list, as it never gets mentioned!
