I feel the classic look should be used as an "incomplete" stage of the curse nowadays. At first the change takes the wolfman form but the more times the infected person transforms the more bestial lupine form begins to take hold.

I agree , the cinematography so great, I come from the north of England and it’s accurate romantic and bleak etc etc. I remember watching this original movie when I was a kid and this a perfect modern interpretation of it, the madness and cruelty of Victorian England, the obsession with medicine ( of which ( batmans Arkham asylum is based on) is all evocative and I love that. Emily Blunt is great in this she’s a great actor that fact she’s gorgeous makes it all good. H weaving as usual always great

The whole 'only one who loves him can set him free' thing probably alludes to some of the classic expressions of werewolf mythology in which the cursed individual would not stay dead, or at least not fully be at rest, unless killed in a specific manner, such as by a loved one. In the extended cut, Malaeva even asks Gwen if she knows what setting Laurence free would truly mean, strongly implying that it means killing him, something Gwen says she can't do at that point in the movie. In classic lycanthrope mythology, failure to kill a werewolf in the prescribed manner could result in the werewolf either returning to its cursed existence or coming back as an unquiet spirit. There are a great many myths surrounding werewolves, but I know that in some cultures suspected dead werewolves would be buried at a crossroads to stop them rising again, and in an interesting precursor to the modern pop culture tendency to link werewolves and vampires, in some parts of Europe it was believed that one way in which a vampire could come to be was if a werewolf was incorrectly killed, resulting in it coming back as a vampire. There is even a creature in Mittel and Eastern European mythology called a Vudkolak which is essentially a half way house between the two, being an undead Lycanthropic being with vampiric powers.

Vukodlak is just a werewolf in Serbian. All Slavic people have a similar variant of the same word. Also, there is no mix of the 2 in Slavic folklore. Vukodlak’s are not as importan as vampires in our folklore as that is just how foreigners used to describe Slavic people back in the day. Part of the reason is that wolfs have a major cultural and religous role for Slavic people as we considerd wolfs as brothers. We even have a saying for when you see a wolf to display respect, and it will let you pass. Vampir is a totally different creature and is the only global word with Serbian origin.

2010 The Wolfman mixes two films. • Werewolf of London (1935) • The Wolfman (1941) John Talbot's origin mirrors the 1935 by going to India and encountering a Werewolf. Larry Talbot's origin most mirrors the 1941 film, replace the gypsy biting him with his father instead. I saw the film in theaters. The guy with the cane on the train was in that version. Theater version I saw Larry didn't turn down the cane gift when offered though.

Some critics felt it lacked genuine chills and suffered from a suspense deficient script, whilst audiences were rather divided over it. There were some moments that probably could’ve been done better, less action movie pacing and more horror movie pacing. But this was the first time that audiences got to see a remake of the first, real successful werewolf movie since the original from 1941.

Correct while it is a good movie there were several problems behind this film that lead to issues that didn't help the success of this film. Plus now a days anytime I hear of big money being spent if horror movies it usually sends up the flag of this movie may lose money as horror movies in general don't pull in the big time numbers that other types do. But I enjoyed this film very much.

The other is The Old Man might be a guardian angel that gave Lawrence the cane to end what John Talbot was doing, which would also explain how he seems to appear and disappear without Lawrence noticing him.

This in my head makes sense and explains his looks. Also, there is this one beautiful scene with a blind opera singer, where Lawrence, in his hybrid form is drawn towards a costume party. And he is bewitched by the vocie of the soprano.

This is a painfully underrated movie. Having bought the special edition with the director's cut , I will tell you that it is the superior version. What would have made it even better are the extended scenes that had been cut that are in the bonus material. I especially like the puppet show scene which inexplicably is deleted from the film. Great sets and acting are only diminished slightly by what I would imagine to be some slow pacing. I also would have liked to see more time with Maleva, the Gypsy woman. I also believe that had they allowed Rick Baker to do more of the practical effects, the transformation scenes would have been amongst the best in retrospect. Had the original movie from 1941 had its plot a bit more fluffed out as they did in this movie, it to would have been better. All-in-all both of these movies are my favorite werewolf movies.

It's interesting that you bring up problems with the pacing and Rick Baker not being allowed to go full American Werewolf in London was originally supposed to happen but the studio stepped in a said keep the make up practical but the transformations will be CGI which led to tensions. Also this film was done in the Writers Strike in 2009 or 2010 and as a result of certain scenes being cut and the original script being altered the director demanded the script be fixed because the changes gave the movie a disjointed feel and as a result of their refusal the first director either left or was fired. Do yes while a good werewolf movie there was by far a better film that could have been made here.

I would have included the scene from The costume ball where the blind woman was singing some sort of Opera. I would have removed some of the dream sequences as to streamline the story a bit more. I might have also backed off a little bit on The Love story I spect between Lawrence and Gwen. Perhaps it would have been better if they just had had him meet her in the town as is done in the original film. I think making the Father the werewolf is the lesser of the two good ideas in both movies and perhaps having his father kill him in this movie would have also played better. Probably one of the best 'wolf-man' type werewolf design on film. Literally the only werewolf movie that went this direction. There are others that came close (design wise), like Wolves (2014) and the most recent one, Werewolf By Night, but those aren't as good as this.

This is a film that gets better the more I watch it, I do wish they'd do a sequel with the surviving Detective struggling with Lycanthropy only his victims are criminals until one gets away forcing him to face a killer as strong and as smart as he. Yes I've heard of Wolfcop but never seen it. Just incase the plots the same.

Yo Cogan, have you ever checked out the Legacy of Kain videogame series? You'd love the vampire lore in it. Further more, the whole storyline is one of the most amazing stories I've experienced that delves into time, fate and redemption. Hope you check it out and hope more that you make a video about it someday. Thank you for the content. Keep rockin man.

Hi Cogan Lollins! Recently I discovered your channel and had the chance to watch some of the content which you created in time. I have to confess that I'm quite interested, cause I really like to read about Mythological and Supernatural Beasts and look at different transpositions of them, but sadly my knowledge on this subject is not vast as yours :) I definitely like The Wolfman (2010). I think they showed the right balance between supernatural and pseudo-scientifical causes for this transformation. I really appreciated your exposition, but I think that you may have missed some details about these Werewolves. At 12:44 you said that they retain some of their supernatural powers in HUMAN FORM, such as Fast Healing and Enhanced Hearing, but also some kind of "Beast Glance", able to scare a horse and tame the guard dog, Samson. Also in the movie there is no actual clue that they keep a better sight or smell ... in truth is actually the opposite, as they show how Lawrence suffers from some grade of random hallucinations, even after his full recovery in the daytime (this reminds me a bit of the "An American Werewolf at London" and, alongside the aging and the homicide of part of his family, this thrilling flashes could also be related to the gradual loss of sanity and final self-destruction of Sir John Talbot, making this "werewolf condition" quite similar to rabies disease). More important than this, it's actually stated and shown multiple times that in human form these werewolves possess some grade of INHUMAN STRENGTH, which allows Lawrence to hold back three villagers (and short after he confess to Gwen that he feels his shoulder surprisingly stronger). The same STRENGTH possessed by his Father, who was effortlessly able to knock down Singh (the night that his brother was killed), kill Carter (the police officer of Scotland Yard), toss a wooden table through the living room, and overpower his son with his bare hands despite his old age ... Obviously all this before the major physical changes, but interestingly just the day before the full moon (as all the other signs of their condition, such as the visions and the growling of the dog), proving that their "wolf side" and all the abilities are always within them, but they are influenced by the fall and the rise of the moon (as exhibit by some transitions during the movie), reaching their peak with the complete transformation). I'm afraid that I wrote something a bit too long (but I hope not too pretentious) but I'd really appreciate it, if this comment could reach you. My Best Regards to You!

I just Loved this iteration of the Werewolf trope. The father/son dynamic was sort of nice. Two for the price of one, sort of. The lab arena scene was just perfect...pompous old men getting their comeuppance...always so satisfying. del Toro was stellar for his presentation...tortured..artistic ..and lethal. Why this film didn't receive more accolades..I will never understand. Honestly...I hated the version of the werewolf in "Van Helsing".....this painful transformation is so organic...kudos to Baker. Too bad this didn't spin off a sequel....Weaving would have made a nice choice. Also, why they ditched Von Sydow's part is frustrating. Enjoy your channel..Kudos!

Great video! Not that it’s important, but towards the end where you say in human form they don’t seem to have any extra strength. In the last fight where father and son are about to battle it out, hopkin’s character did throw a piece of furniture across the room with one hand pretty easily for a man his age. Could be as you said, since he’s been cursed longer he could just be stronger, or because the moon was coming out into the open and may have been in the early stages of transformation and his (the father) transformations could be quicker with less of a struggle, than the new “pups”. I guess we will never really know unless the writer comes out and says something. Again love your videos and appreciate all the work you put into them.
