many videos on this movie miss that the reason the werewolves are Nazis in David's nightmare is because David and Jack are both Jewish , there's a menorah (Hanukah candles) in the back and a small Israel flag near it and the director John Landis mentioned that David's grandparents were Holocaust survivors so it's the "demon dog from hell" using David's worse fears to taunt him

Watched this with my wife over the weekend. Her reaction was a genuine, "I cannot get over how sad that was". She keenly felt the tragedy and the stolen innocence. Nobody deserved what happened to them. Not David, not Jack, not the werewolf's victims, not Alex. Not one of them. Without the humor the movie would have been unbearably bleak. This is one of the few movies that really gets across how painful a full body transformation like this would be.

After seeing this movie multiple times I finally noticed that after David is bitten he no longer has an appetite for human food. In the hospital he can't eat and the nurse has to feed him and at her apartment he looks in the refrigerator but just closes it again. I think that only the werewolf's own victims haunt him (his friend being the exception). As far as the town, I think that they knew the werewolf or at least the family that he came from and as long as the werewolf had not killed a human, the townspeople didn't kill the werewolf.

2 thousand years earlier the Romans are on a punitive mission in ancient Britain because of a series of successful rebellions by the native Celts. They are taking no prisoners, burning everything. In the area where the village of Proctor will ultimately stand,a small community of refugees from previous Roman bloodshed has been living.Desperate for a means of protecting themselves, they call upon the God of the underworld for "assistance".A deal is made, the Romans will be repelled, but the villagers have entered into a covenant that is reaffirmed each generation in the form of the werewolf curse ,which sent members of the original generation down among the Romans at night. For protection, the villagers who were not werewolves, were told to make the mark of a pentagram on a large tree and the ground around it and stay there during the nights of the full moon. This practice would continue through the centuries, hence the Slaughtered Lamb. An idea for a back story.

An interesting little bit of info about the movie story, BBC made a radio drama adaptation of this movie that answers quite a lot of questions about some elements from the movie. It includes scenes where Jack is actually in Limbo and he sees a large number of people attacked by the werewolf bloodline over the centuries. The previous werewolf that killed Jack and attacked David was actually the brother of the head of the pub. He had been locked in a psychiatric prison but he escaped on the full moon night when Jack and David had arrived at the pub. There is also a funny bit where Jack learns that it is not only the ones who are killed by the werewolf who wander limbo, the carriers of the curse also wander there as long as the curse lives. It is pretty funny as the previous werewolf is the one who explains the situation to Jack. Jacky’s response is, “Son of a bitch, you killed me”! And that is just some of the scenes in the bbc radio drama adaptation.

I don’t know if it’s canon, but according to An American Werewolf in Paris, this movie’s sequel, David and Alex had a daughter who inherited the bloodline of the werewolf. That means that Jack, and all the other people killed were not released from limbo.
Your theory about why the town didn't kill the werewolf is really smart. I makes sense. The werewolf could have been a member of the town and someone the townspeople had known their whole lives. The werewolf seemed to stay on the moors and out of the town. Maybe the townspeople and the werewolf had some kind of understanding. Thanks for the video. Your channel is a lot of fun.

It's actually the bald man's brother,in the radio version he says "I killed me own flesh and blood to save them!". Signaling that he killed his brother to save David. In the radio version the beginning is in a prison (atleast by what I understood) and he turna into a werewolf, kills his cellmate,a guard and escapes.
I think the reason we only see the friend is because it's the last kill before the death of the werewolf.

They really killed that aspect in Underworld. With Lucius you can really hear the man screaming with the wolf
I love the sound they used for the werewolf's howl, it's a perfect blend of a wolf howling and a human screaming which is exactly what the creature itself is. I think you are right about the other werewolf too, the town people probably let him live because most of the time he was just Bob from down the street that they grew up with and never wanted to be cursed the way he was. So knowing that he was only dangerous on full moons they just stayed inside and let him eat their sheep until morning. That would also explain the lack of ghouls if Jack was that one's first kill, any previous victims of other wolves may have rooted to the point of no longer being able to manifest or maybe they've been stuck like that for so long they've broken and given up and don't see any need to talk to what they see as just another link in the chain of monsters.
Definitely one of the best films and practical designs ever can’t deny that the cgi werewolf from van helsing is always my favorite especially van helsings own Also you have to cover Skyrim vampire’s and werewolves, the werewolves from the quarry, werewolf the apocalypse, teen wolf werewolves and definitely dog soldiers

Diversity, causing the dumbing down of the general population and therefore unintelligent slop is now accepted by the masses.
Fun fact: quite possibly the reason why David screams about his body temperature raised so rapidly is due to the fact that canines have a higher body temperature than humans. Dogs and Wolves have body temperatures ranging from 100 to 104°F. It may not seem like that much of a difference, but that's actually very dangerous for humans.

In the radio drama version of the movie, Jack learns what he learned from another person in limbo, only to discover later on that that person was a victim of the curse, as HE was the carrier of the curse and confessed he was the one who passed it on to David, which made Jack respond with, "You son of a bitch! You're the one who killed me!"
Every year I rewatch this flick.. def 1 of my favorites
One of the things that really stuck with me from this film for some reason was the very ending how the screen snaps to the credits and 'Blue Moon' starts playing. I can't remember what that technique/ effect is called but it just left such an impact and the note it ended on was perfect.
You know there is a radio drama based off American Werewolf in London. While it has some differences to the film. It does go into some details that is absent from the film such as: the curse did last for generations, the people who are trapped in limbo don't really talk to each other as there is nothing really to talk about, and that the werewolf who infected David is one of the villager's brother, in fact it was him that told Jack about the curse and what David needed to do to end it.
I was about 11 years old when I saw this movie at the drive-in with my parents, and it both scared the hell out of me, and completely enthralled me. I've always loved werewolves more than any other human-sized monsters from the Wolfman moving forward. Unfortunately unlike zombies, and vampires there are very few really good werewolf movies comparatively, but this one is the best of the best. Another one with top-tier, beast-like werewolves is Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Even though they're CGI they're done very well, and I love the effects of the curse being when one is turned by William, it's permanent. A victim can't ever become human again.
Also, my final take was that David could have wounded several people in the melee after the theater. That would have been a great parting shot. A man or woman showing their friends the scratch on their leg from that wild animal in Piccadilly Circus.
@sebastijancamagajevac9942

Agree 👍
I actually assumed David is full of energy, because he has fed off his victims (although in some lore the voracious appetite to feed comes from having to need the energy to change back to human) I also assumed that the ghouls the David sees, are the ones *he* killed, and the previous ghouls are laid to rest when the previous Werewolf was killed (by the villagers, at the beginning) Part of me wants to believe that David (as a Wolf) decided to attack Alex as suicide by Cop

I love the first transformation, ZERO CGI needed. Superb protrayal! Analysis: I think ghouls only appears to those who killed them. Meaning the previous wolfman are only haunted by his victims, and every wolfman has their own ghouls speaking and conversing to them. Like a connection. Or may his friend is just the only one who started hording the recent victims to convince him of ending the curse and setting them free. But having a military wolfmen in worldwar uniform suggests that the curse of lycanthropy started in either ww1 or ww2. And that the wolfman who infected and killed his friend, is indeed a citizen of the pub with that pagan star of protection.

‘Zombies’ are straight from African spirituality. If you look at it from that lens that’s clearly where it originates. Even the term “undead” is straight up from their mythos. Many tales of how “witches” or bad spiritualists either create or use the “undead” to do their bidding. There are some tales about how the undead haunt their family too, and descendants until they are laid to rest by putting down the one who turned them into such unfortunate beings.
I’ve always wondered about the ending if whether David gain control over his wolf form for a brief moment or was he in control the whole time but was dealing with a huge hunger of flesh and blood that he can’t control? It feels like if David and the Wolf were wrestling to see who gets control of the vessel meaning the David’s body.
My favorite werewolf of all time. It still gives me the creeps just like when I was a kid when I first watched it.
Really nice video, subscribed, I hope you continue to upload
This is imo the perfect Werewolf movie, I've watched many times and I learn more and more about it. Recently "go with me here" I've recognised that it's about puberty, going from teenager into adulthood. For example the trip abroad. That's independence, getting away from your parents. The relationship between David and Jack, male bonding brotherhood. Sexual fantasy ie sex with an older woman Alex "Jenny Agutter" and porn. And finally the Werewolf, the transformation, growing pains teenage meltdowns the anger and violence. It's an absolute masterpiece. The Howling is fantastic also and I'd love to see a prequel series based on Eddie and Marsha Quist and their lycanthropic adventures in 70s LA.
Well according to Greek mythology the first werewolf was King like lycanus which is why we get the word lycanthropy. He was cursed by Zeus to become a vicious beast because you already had the nasty habit of eating human flesh and tried to trick Zeus himself into eating human flesh when Zeus visited him

You should look into older origins of werwolves, which actually combines vampires, witches and wolves. They eventually just split them into their own beings, but there are very old tales of witches eating the dead, drinking the living’s blood and vitality, wearing the dead’s skin, and turning into wolves, bats, roaches, etc.
I think that what his film does that the others just cant, is how believable the CURSE is...........No memories the night before and when he turns completely, He is 100 percent at the mercy o the werewolf.......The absolute fierce eyes and face show no remorse and no weakness....It might be he best werewolf design ever made......
Absolutely love this movie. I’ve seen most of the movies with werewolves in them but the transformation in this one was so detailed. Great video, though I’d seen the film a few times I never understood the curse fully so thanks 😁
With regards to the number of undead ascribed to David in the film, rather than inheriting those of the previous incumbent, I think that each individual werewolf accrues a murder-tally of their own over the course of their significantly-reduced lifespan. Upon death, the "bloodline is severed" & thus the proverbial slate is wiped clean. Think of it as the supernatural equivalent to "you-broke-it-you-bought-it."
There's just something ultimately spine chilling about trying to mate real horror with comedy, somehow, it just really makes the horror even more horrible. And I agree, that scene when David first turns, while alone in that girl's apartment and all the while you're listening to 'Blue Moon' off the TV, It really is a major freak-out show.
zombie jack make up is simply outstanding, you can see the details of the nerves etc when he visits David in the hospital;i can´t remmember if this movie got any oscar but it did deserved the best make up one.
Dog soldiers would be an incredible werewolf video
This is one of my favorite werewolf movies.
This and Silver Bullet are two of my favorite Werewolf movies. I think David could only see his victims but could his friend because??? Lol
I’ve loved this, ever since I saw it in the 80s, it’s combination of horror, humour, quirky script & a fantastic acting line up, raises it head and shoulders above normal horror fare. The Piccadilly Circus scene is fantastic
Thank you so much for talking about this one. My favorite werewolf as well, it's just so haunting and entertaining
The version of blue moon is by Sam cook in the movie incase anyone looking for the exact cover
I probably misremember, but didn't the nurse get pregnant or that was revealed in the second film not in the original. I love practical effects and the fact that they managed to incorporate humanity into the werewolf mask which creates this strange feeling when looking at it is one of my favorite things in the film. I always explained to my self that David's unwillingness to put an end to his life is due to the curse affecting him, as most people when faced with the knowledge of becoming such threat to the people around them would actually go trough with it. But the curse is turning David into subtly into sociopath by the curse by means of self preservation.
Just rewatched this film recently. Quick fun/ scary movie. Good review, Logan nails it.
Best overall Werewolf movie to date. My personal favorite and has yet to be beat. Great story, great acting, great filming, great mix of comedy and horror. A must watch every Halloween.
The strange quality the face of the werewolf has is called mascara. They darkened the fur around the eyes with tapering up at the corner going towards the ears to provide a more sinister quality to its expression.
This will forever be one of *the* best werewolf movies ever 😎
I live around where that Moore scene was filmed, and it is really freaky walking back at night from the club
Really diggin your videos man! I'm a huge werewolf nut hehe good stuff! *cheers*
The second movie in Paris focuses way more on the things that made the movie bad than good.

@@TheEnigmaticBM39 I think the film perfects the mix of horror and comedy
This movie is arguably the best werewolf movie as it really captures the horror and pain of the transformation. The first transformation sequence is the best ever made and the calm background music is a perfect contrast to David's screams of absolute agony as the beast inside takes over. The sound the werewolf makes is also perfect and eerie as the sound designers combined a wolf howl with a human scream of pain. Altogether though the movie is old - it's only two years younger than me - it still holds up very well as a staple of horror movies.
A prequel to this classic would be EPIC

No because it would destroy the mystery. Something your generation is just going to have to live with.
I saw this movie at a drive-in back in the very early 80’s. Eventually bought the DVD. It’s a Halloween favourite in my family and the best werewolf movie around! David’s first transformation is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Attention to detail, like his pain as he changed, his lack of knowledge of his alter ego, his disbelief that he’s been irrevocably changed, adds to its charm. Anyone else recall David’s career as the Doctor Pepper ad guy? Recognized him immediately. Quite the carrier change for the actor! Give this movie a try. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll watch bit again and again and again and … 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

Great job on this video.. this is my favorite Werewolf movie as well!
The Villagers could have lied and said they've had problems with wild wolves at night and then explained that the star on the wall is just a local superstition. Thus keeping the boys and their secret both safe. But of course the flaws of humanity naturally lead to the series of events we see in the film's story.
Fun fact. The werewolf of AWIL turn with a full moon, walk on all fours, no weakness to silver and can be killed with regular gunfire. The werewolves from The Howling can change at will, walk on two legs, can be harmed by silver. But regular bullets do nothing. American Werewolf in Paris the female werewolf in that film is the daughter of David Kessler. At the end of the film she had a child with a man and their child inherited the werewolf bloodline. But the werewolf in AWIL is the first quadruped werewolf in film. Werewolves prior only walked on two legs. The Howling debuted also in 1981 but I believe was released 8 months earlier than AWIL. In American werewolf in paris it was mentioned how the curse was traced to a man in London. The beast before David. I'd love if you did the werewolf and curse from film Bad Moon as it's based on a book. And the werewolves from the 80s tv series Werewolf. Both unique curses of their own.

The Werewolf TV Show was excellent! I'd love to own it, but it sadly will never be released due to copyright law concerning the soundtrack 😔 At least it's on KZread though. So thankful for that!! Wish they had finished the series but timeless regardless 🌕
This movie is really great I watched it for the first time a few years ago
Great video Bro, I liked your narration.
The reason why I decide to watch this vid is due to my curiosity on the horror & gore content this movie serves (even though this is horror & comedy one). Oh, and I saw some people social media have been mentioning this movie over and over again. I dunno, maybe that's because of the Halloween craze & ppl just wannt binge-watch horror movies during October. At the end of this vid I am convinced to add American Werewolf in London into my watch list! Thanks, Cogan, for the coverage! 👍🏽👍🏽 P.S. I am definitely so looking forward to watch your American Horror Story review and discussions! I was a big fan of AHS back then when I was in college but then I stopped watching more AHS after the AHS Hotel (I forgot which season that was, it was some years ago lol) since I got busy with my job & life. But I am definitely in if people ask me whether I wanna relive my AHS era again or not.
Will you do a video on the werewolves from Dog Soldiers? I think they’re one of the best designed werewolves in all of film history. Their design, size, speed, strength and intelligence are truly frightening.
14:20: I would assume that only David's victims needed to come back from the dead to tell David about ending the curse. And, since Jack had been involved in the attack, I would assume that's why he came back from the dead. Although, he was a fresh kill, so, he would've only just started to rot.
Another great video brother, they all are and you're definitely one of the best at this! Forgive me again for asking but I would still love you to do the vampires of Salem's Lot, I think you would do great!
I saw this at high school in 85. No idea why they sat the whole year 8 in the hall to watch it but I'm glad they did. Great movie, haven't seen it since.
Do you think the tavern sign of the beheaded wolf is a warning to werewolves? Like in human form the werewolf knows they’ve killed his kind before and that it’s a no go zone? Hmmmm…. Very interesting hypothesis. This movie is so good and got me into the genre. Hence the question, I’ve always wondered.
You should go over all the wolf forms explained from teen wolf
SUBBED! Love this movie! Thanx for the review
Can’t get the bald guy from the slaughtered lamb screaming “THAS ENUFF” out of my head
When me and my mother watched this for the first time we both came up with the theory that during the alley scene when the nurse runs up to David and seemed to reach him we theorized that he regain some of his memories as a human. David knowing that he needed to die and that he cant bring himself to commit suicide and the police are there ready to gun him down he lunged at the nurse on purpose so he would be gun down and it would end. Now many are asking "well how would her words reach him when he's a beast? And why did he react the way he did rather than lung at her sooner?" I think the reason why he didn't attack her and her words reached him was the nurses scent was familiar to him (considering they had sex and a deep relationship). Smelling the familiar scent he seemed to identify her as his mate so it calmed down and trusted her. Now this brings up another theory perhaps smelling her scent David lose control and lunged at her attempting to turn her as well (if he didn't go to the adult theater and didn't hear about the people he killed he most likely would of ignored the warnings and then when he changed again and if she was present he probably would of tried to turn her to have his mate with him or by theory anyways). This also brings up a question since David and the nurse had sex several times could it have been possible she got pregnant and if so is the curse passed onto her child? If so is it possible that wolf David smelt this In the alley and with what humanity he had left attempted to kill her to prevent the curse from continuing?
DO THE WEREWOLVES FROM BEING HUMAN
