    My biggest frustration with most videos about this film is that most people don’t understand what the character Megan actually is. Everyone seems to think that she gets turned when she cuts her hand on the window, she has actually been a werewolf for over a year, she was able to somehow suppress her change for a while, she was the person who took the family photo. She also doesn’t die from being shot in the head, she was actually one of the werewolves in the kitchen when it blew up. I’m so glad that you actually did your research and got it right!!

She's fully aware of the cannibalism (given she tries to stop Joe eating the stew), and despite her protestations about not wanting to be part of the f*cked-up family, she was fully complicit. Her wanting to escape is more to do with the family wanting to keep isolated than anything altruistic.

    These werewolves are very much like the one's in the howling. They can control their transformations partially by delaying it. Have wolf like behaviors in human form such as being cannibalistic. And silver harms them. After being infected by a werewolf one will change within a couple of hours. Also they can think. As one werewolf in the film actually picked up a gun and actually started shooting at the soldiers. I do feel however Meg whom was secretly a werewolf herself (didn't want to be) had a telepathic psychic connection with the other werewolves. Because when she told the soldiers to bomb the barn you saw her communicating with the other werewolves without being physically around them. Fun fact. The director had ballet dancers in the werewolf costumes. That's why they're so graceful. Also these are one of the tallest werewolves. Towering at 7 feet or higher. I consider these types to be true werewolves as they have full wolf heads but human bodies with little to no fur and razor sharp claws but human intelligence and animal savagery. A wonderfully terrifying werewolf curse are from Bad Moon, Werewolf the tv series and the wanshang dhole from the xfiles.

    'Eyebrows joined in the middle' is a reference to medieval European werewolf mythology, where such joined eyebrows were considered a sign of Lycanthropy - a way to detect a werewolf in their human form. It played into some very ugly werewolf panics that resulted in several people being executed for no reason across Europe in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries.

    @@Tom_Samad Depends on the country. In 1507 a French judge decided, that werewolves were not a thing, and that the defendant in front of him (who had savagely murdered a couple of people, including little children, and cannibalised them) was mentally ill. To clarify this - according to the judge, there was no lycanthropy, only mental illness. People tried to use it as sort of an insanity defense, like "the devil made me do it", but after 1507 this didn't work anymore in France. This specific defendant was sent to a Franciscan monastery for treatment (or, tbh, most likely just to be locked away for the rest of eternity), because one of the three miracles of St. Francis was taming the Wolf of Gubbio - a man-eating monster wolf, that had killed a bunch of villagers. Therefore Franciscan monks were deemed competent, when it came to taking care of a wannabe werewolf. In other news, it is very likely that all three miracles of St. Francis were fake. He had tried to found his own order of monks, but the pope wouldn't allow it, because at that time the church thought there were already enough orders and he should just join one of the existing ones. But Francis wanted to be a cult leader, not a follower. So he set up 3 miracles, two of them most likely with the help of a professional animal trainer: 1. Preaching to the birds. A trainer could have helped him to attract or tame wild birds for this one, so they would come to him on command. 2. The Wolf of Gubbio. The story sounds very much as if Francis placed a large trained wolfdog in a forest nearby and let it attack and kill villagers working on the fields or trying to travel. Then he showed up with an unspecified "man", the "wolf" came to them and sat down in front of them like a dog. After that it was tame and was fed and taken care of by the villagers like a normal dog. The "man" seems to have been the trainer, who called his killer wolfdog back and stopped it from further attacking people. 3. Coming down from a mountain retreat with stigmata. Francis climbed a mountain with sharp rocks and thorn bushes on his own, stayed there for a little bit and returned with crucifixion wounds, that looked suspiciously as if they had been made with sharp rocks and a homemade thorn crown. They were also incorrect: Romans placed the nails for the arms between the two large bones of the lower arms, not in the palm. The large bones would hold the crucified person in place, even when the flesh started to tear under the weight. Palms have no bones, that are strong enough to pull the same trick, so they would rip out pretty quickly. Francis had palm wounds - but an actual victim of crucifixion (like, let's say, Christ) would have had arm wounds instead. Palm stigmata are fake by definition. So... medieval conman Frank probably had some kids eaten by a trained wolfdog to become an official cult leader with saint status. Let that sink in.

    So, you're right about the name, in both senses. In Irish Gaelige, it's pronounced "Oo-ah" and in Scots Gaelic, it's "oo-ath", though chances are the family calls themselves "Yew-ah" to avoid detection from anyone who actually speaks Gaelic. Also, fun fact, unlike most mythologies where werewolves/were-creatures are bad, the were-creatures in Gaelic myth are a good thing. Myths tell of "wolf-headed" soldiers who would protect the high king. One could even argue that Cu Chulainn from Irish myth is one, as his name means "Hound of Chulainn" and he would undergo a similar painful transformation.

  • @thomasdowling2011

    @thomasdowling2011

    From the story of Cú Chulainn i was told growing up, he took the name of the hound of Chulainn after killing the blacksmith Chulainn's guard dog with a hurley and sliotar and serving as a proverbial guard dog in its stead. Also the wolf headed soldiers were probably inspired by the wolves of Ossory, being that they have similar stories.

  • @SSD_Penumbra

    @SSD_Penumbra

    @@thomasdowling2011 That much is true from the myth, but pop culture often shows his transformation to be more beastial and less of a namesake, kind of like how the werewolves from the movie Howl are shown. They're still human, but with a lot more beast-like features and Cu Chulainn is often shown similarly during his Riastad.

    I think like how you can hold off on the transformation taking place during the full moon for a few hours; you can hold off on transforming back when the night is over. Or maybe their family and Megan can't, as they are civilians. But Ryan was a soldier and already more aggressive as a human. So perhaps he was the only one who could stay in his wolf form past sunrise. Megan did say they were good people. So maybe she and the family never wanted to/knew you could stay in wolf form past sunrise.

    That's a good thought. He probably couldn't control it yet and had trouble changing back. I imagine that would take some practice, as the transformation into a werewolf seems to be involuntary (they can delay it, but can't prevent it from happening), and transforming back may take some effort. Especially when you've somehow made it into a dark basement room, where sunlight can't hit you directly. Plus the sun in northern countries like Scotland is weak, and you will see a grey sky and some light in the morning, before it actually starts to rise. Not enough UV light to change back?
