PLEASE WATCH THE CORRECTION VIDEO HERE: • CORRECTION! DTA-120BT ...
The information regarding THD of this amp was INCORRECT in my review. The manufacturer made a mistake in the manual stating this amp was rated at 0.01% THD at 40 watts. The amp is actually rated at 0.1% THD at 1 Watt and 10% THD at 60 Watts.
Given this information, I still recommend this amp at this price, but I don't want to mislead anyone who is looking for an ultralow distortion amp.
Thank you to the awesome viewer for pointing this out to me!

I made a mistake in this video with the THD rating of this amp. The stated THD of 0.01% at 40 watts is incorrect. The correct THD level is actually 10% at 60 watts. Before you buy this amp, please watch my correction video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqFlmLBxo5qdqZc.html

But it would be less than 0.5% distortion @ 1 watt. They should give you that rating. And it simply means it's NOT 60 watts, more like about 30 watts with the minimal distortion. It's manufacturer's bullshit "watts". Snake oil wattage rating!

I run 4 of these in an active setup on tweeters and midhorns and love them! They do have some long term reliability issues with the power supply, and the volume pot needs to be cleaned once in awhile, but directly feeding 107db/1w tweeter horns, they don't hiss and sound very smooth and clear. Also built a pair of active 3 way monitors using 3 of them for a friend, one had a bad volume pot after a year. 5/7 isn't bad for what you get, considering they play with lots of $500-1000 used gear!

Hey Kirby. Thanks for the videos. My speaker bar died, so I used the drivers to make a Bluetooth boom box for my garage gym. I rolled the dice on an amp from eBay because I had to have 2.1 to power the sub separately. It turned out to be a really nice amp. The brand is Nobsound (stupid name) and the model is NS-14G. It’s 2x50W + 100W for the sub. If you’re looking for a sub $70 amp that has Bluetooth and 2.1 capability, check it out.

I would check that you can actuallyt run a powered sub from the high-level (speaker) connectors. Many class d and class t amps don't allow this, presumably something to do with the impedance of the subwoofer's high-level inputs.

  • @mariusloubeeka5810

How about some measurements to back up the manufacturer's specs? Especially interesting are frequency responses of class D amps because they vary in the treble depending on the connected load (4, 8 or 16 ohms) due to the contained low pass filter at the output. BTW: class T is just by a class D chip by Tripath, as far as I know.

Great amps, I have 4 of them and have sold 6 more as part of triamped monitors for clients. Way more powerful than the more common ta2024, particularly in the midbass where the weaker chips have some trouble. The only caveat I've found sonically is with very efficient speakers the noise floor is a bit high. Dead silent with speakers in the 90db/1w ballpark, a faint hiss from speakers in the mid 90s. Currently running one amp per side for 110db/1w active compression drivers and the hiss is horrible. All 4 amps produce identical hiss with these drivers, off a very low noise power source (dedicated breaker box feeding isolation banks feeding a linear PS), so it's not just a noisy lemon. This isn't their intended use, but it's worth noting since t-amps are popular for the hf in budget active projects. To get a lower noise floor and similar sound quality is easily 3-4x the cost.

there's still something I dont quite understand in all of this. For instance, If I own a pair of Klipsch R14m which operate at 50Watts per channel at 8 ohms (Max. 200) , I'd theoretically need a 50watts per channel amp with 8ohms impedance; right? Because the speakers RMS states so in the specs sheet. - So, the DTA 120BT should be enough to keep them running. But yet, everyone always say that a high watt output is overkill due to the efiency each pair of speakers have, even if the amp and the speakers match. - So, in my example, the DTA120BT would be good enough if not even overpowering the speakers at full capacity. however I've also seen many people claim that, as a "rule of thumb", you should always look for more watts per channel than the RMS but no more than double the RMS, so as not to keep the amp running at 100% its capacity all the time. - Then, in my example, the amp would be doing its max effort to keep the speakers running at its minimal. Right? So... up to what degree is matching the watts and ohms reliable to boost a pair of speakers without over/under power them? Do we need to match the watts from the amp and the RMS of the speakers? should we get more than the RMS so as not to push the amp too hard? or Should we get less watts per channel than the RMS states, becuase, we are probably not going to push either of them to their 100%?

I don't know why they say it has 0.01% thd at 40 watts in the beginning of the manual because look a bit further at the specifications and they say it's 0.1% at 1 watt and 10% at 60 watts. There is no way a small amp like that gets 0.01% thd at that price point. My luxman poweramp has 0.008% at 100 watts and that was a top of the line amp in late 1970s, a new 8000 dollar luxman poweramp does 0.009% at 120 watts. If that cheap little thing really could do 0.01 % thd at 40 watts it would get a lot more attention in the audio world.

  • @tomkocur

    @tomkocur

    5 жыл бұрын

It's not OK to combine different speakers on one output without a crossover, no matter if you wire them in parallel or in series. In your combination you need an amp that will be able to handle 2,7Ohms and due to lower impedance the fullrange speaker will get double the power of the woofer. If you wire them in series, woofer will also act as a lowpass filter for the fullrange (the voicecoil acts as an inductance).

Love your channel! I have watched your vids many times, and have even built a few small projects based on your videos, however I am trying to do something different with one. I have a 1946 cabinet that all of the guts were missing when I got it, so I want to do a custom BT stereo. I was wondering if you would be able to help, either via video, or build plans. I want to have BT & aux input, which is no biggie with most boards. I want to have an on/off switch and a separate volume control put in the original location on the face of the radio. I also need to light up the face of the radio. Also, suggestion on the drivers? Mid range? Subs? Tweeters? I think alot of your viewers are in similar boat, have very little knowledge of how to, but want that vintage radio modernized.

On the same speakers l tested my $900 NAD amp against a numeric $300 Jaycar amp. The Jaycar not only has double the power, it also kicked the NAD's ass. It just sounded way better and the cymbal sound was more like metal. The Jaycar is supposed to be a MOSFET design and that could be why. It was Jaycar's flagship amp and they must believe in bang for buck if not the best. It's high distortion, 0.1% THD and the NAD is 0.03%. The Jaycar has 40 times more distortion but sounds way better (on those speakers, two way coaxials).

Good video, but a few things to keep folks informed. Class D does not mean digital, so a Class D amplifier is not a digital amplifier per say. Also there is no Class T in amplifier vernacular. That was a marketing move by Tripath. Class D and "Class T" amplifiers use exactly the same method to amplify the signal. Now you know and knowing is half the battle.
