A high pass filter is definitely sorely needed in many of these little amps. It would be amazing if there was a subwoofer output with the corresponding low-pass filter as well. This would allow the amp to function as a true crossover. So I haven't seen any amps provide a true crossover and people would need to buy something like a miniDSP if they wanted bass management in the form of a crossover. I noticed that Rogers Sound Labs offers a miniamp with a 90Hz HPF too (RSL IA255.1) and their new 12" sub (RSL Speedwoofer 12S) also has a variable HPF built-in, which will filter the Line-In. Very nice for manufacturers to start offering better bass management options for people trying to set up simple 2.1 systems

Clearly Fosi audio reads the comments because that was the #1 request in the V3 video. It’d be cool if it had a balanced input so you could use a pro preamp, but I guess for an 80$ device that’s probably not gonna happen.

That one Little Bear Amp and Speaker switcher is an awesome device. I have one and I use it all the time. My use for it is to switch between a tube amp and a SS amp that can drive either my speakers or my headphones via a banana plug to 4pin XLR adapter(I made mine but there are tons available online). Driving headphones off of the speaker taps is a game changer especially for hard to drive planars. For best results use a source with adjustable gain. I use the Geshelli J2 and it's three levels of gain work well when switching from HP to speakers.

Feature set wise this is outstanding for the price.. unfortunately it seems the power & sound quality is on par or less for the price. I don't own or have a need for these ultra budget amps but i certainly applaud any manufacturer that adds these types of features at this or any price point. Always nice to have options. Having preouts on an amplifier is good stuff, adding a crossover is even cooler.

Nice detail! - I always thought it is kind of silly not to use a high-pass filter when adding a sub - takes a bit of the stress from the amp and speakers while, at least theoretically, making it easier to blend the subwoofer in. However - It still leaves many of us with a dilemma since it does NOT feature an option to activate a mixed channel low-pass filter for those subs that are designed to use a standard subwoofer output. Currently I have repurposed an old Mackie HR824 I found used (just one, so the other channel was likely broken) and this feature would sadly not be useful to me. That said, I absolutely see the use of this.

If you listen to vinyl, there is another very good use for the high-pass filter on that amp. You can turn it on and set it for say, 30Hz, and it will reduce the record warp frequencies (3-4Hz) and the tonearm resonance frequencies (6-10Hz). This will save a LOT of the amplifier's power when playing back vinyl, and will also reduce distortion caused by your woofers being driven out of their linear excursion range by these infrasonic signals.

@@chinmeysway I did say infrasonic, which means too low to hear. Yes, I'm sure. Record warps often produce infrasonic energy around 3 or 4 Hertz, while the tonearm resonance of most turntables happens at 6-10 Hertz, and this resonance can also be excited by record warps or even by normal transients in the music. The high-pass filter, set to 30Hz or so, will reduce the amplitude of these infrasonic signals, sparing the amp and speakers from trying to reproduce them.

With that silver volume knob it looks alot like my little Keces E40. My E40 has a phono mm stage, a pre out and two inputs. While I like the subout with variable frequency, the Keces E40 can drive a 4 ohm load and at fairly high levels before distorting. You reach noticeable distortion first with transient peaks which require lots of power bursts before it outright distorts completely. That's a level I do not typically listen too and I only experienced that on Dali Menuet SE's which drop well under 4 ohms and are rated at 83dB. That was about the 3 o'clock position on the volume knob. On my Dali Opticon 1s which do not drop below 4 ohms, I never had an issue. With 6-8 ohm speakers, and if at least 86 dB efficient, I don't think there would be any issue well above 90 dB, even at 6-8 feet away from the speakers in a moderate sized room . I like the small form factor and not many small amps provide both the power and SQ to be considered by audiophiles. The Keces E40 while limited to SPLs and requires reasonable match-ups with equipment trounces the inexpensive class D equipment IMO, although I still like the class D stuff on certain speakers. The issue is essentially price for that performance as it now costs $750 US. Although less than a Rega Brio and also an amp I prefer over the Brio, the inexpensive class D amps still provide excellent performance for their price. If price is an issue, put your money in the speakers you want and work your way up in amps, dac, etc., starting with more budget equipment. While not inexpensive, the Keces is capable of driving alot of speakers very well musically which cost as much as 3X its cost or more as long as it isn't a super difficult load to drive...IMO. If Dayton could up the power and quality of its amp/pre section, it could be a really good solution even if it would cost a bit more to do so. If you want a quality class AB amp in a small form factor and can use an external dac as well as a tt and can afford it, consider the Keces E40.

I could really use some help in setting up a proper hifi system. I know this question is asked a whole lot and let me know if there is a more appriorate place to ask it. I've been trying to figure it out myself, but I keep running into problems with components of my already existing system that may not work with products like the ones mentioned in this video. The two sources I am trying to hook into the system are a 90s-2000s Sony CD player with just a straight RCA out and an Audio-Technica AT-LPW30TK (this unit has a built-in preamp, but I'm not sure how great it is and if it would be worth upgrading to something like the project phono-box S2). I would also like to be able to do Bluetooth for digital streaming. Initially I ran these two sources into an older Yamaha receiver, the receiver out to a Polk PSW10 sub, and then using the speaker level outputs of the sub out to to a pair of JVC passive speakers I received from a neighbor (these were to replace the Edifier R1280T powered speakers I was using before with the turntable and CD player when I didn't have a subwoofer). My CD player works great with the setup. I'll be it the audio is darker than I would prefer, but it's loud and the bottom frequencies are very articulate. However, when I tried using my turntable it began to distort either immediately or halfway through a side of the record. I'm fairly confident it's the receiver, but I could be wrong. What should I do to improve this setup while keeping my subwoofer? Do I need another, better receiver or could I use an integrated amplifier such as the ones mentioned in this video? What speakers would work best with said amplifier? I am so lost and just want to be able to listen to my records again. I have at max $500 I can spend on a new setup, but the cheaper the better lol. Any help in the right direction would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Can you get a standalone high pass filter that sits between the amp and the passive speakers if your amp doesn't have one built in? I have a nice sub and want to filter some bass from the speakers. Been searching and haven't seen anything for this application.

What are the advantages of these small amps compared to a sub $500 A/V receiver? By the time you get a streamer and dac you’re at $300-$500 anyways. Just curious if there’s a quality advantage or something. Doesn’t appear to have anymore power than a standard a/v receiver so I wasn’t sure. Of course I pre ordered two ZA3’s and a small set of Sony sscs 5’s to see what a small system will sound like. I just saw a 1991 pioneer elite A/V receiver for $195. I would think that unit would be hard to beat with these which are $100 more for two za3 and the cost of a dac/streamer.

An amp without high pass to speakers AND low pass to preamp RCAs is a deal breaker now that I've had it with my BasX. I highly doubt the Fosi sounds better than the A07. At best, it might sound as good.

I have both, in my opinion the V3 does sound slightly better. Mostly on the bass end to be honest, it's tighter. My A07 bass sounds a bit muddier compared to the V3. That being said, the a07 is still good value for money. (I'm comparing the a07 with the stock 32 or 36v (can't remember sorry) vs the V3 with 48v btw, so may not be totally fair, idk).

  • @cheapaudioman

    @cheapaudioman

you can doing the old school "bass blocker" method of putting a cap inline with the positive lead but that still is sending a full strength signal to the speakers. Mini dsp is also an option but that can be costly and difficult to set up. Actually a use case scenario for this product is just use it as a high pass filter" by running source into this and then this into another amp

I don't see the point of a high-pass filter on an amp, when almost all subwoofer models include a low-pass filter, other than to make subwoofer tuning easier. Especially if you're going to pay more for an amp that isn't as good, in the end, as a Fosi V3.

With similar features which one do you prefer? The Dayton Audio DTA-100ST or the RSL ia 255.1? I'm leaning toward the RSL because of the USB input but I don't like the 3.5mm sub/pre output.

  • @cheapaudioman

the RSL had more juice so I'd probably go with that one. Also the tone controls were very useful. But the highness filter is fixed. there are benefits to both. depends on your use case.

I have to agree that a high pass on a modest system can improve it quite a bit, even without a sub! It is often better to just get by with the 2nd harmonic of the actual bass line and have the rest of the signal clean than to suffer clipping or tons of IM distortion from low frequencies that the system just can not reproduce anyway. Yes you will miss the lowest notes, but you were not going to hear them over such a system anyway! I had to go listen to intergalactic, but I still prefer Animusic's Gyrodrums for showing off bass. That said I have heard some systems where the IM distortion would have completely wrecked the vocals in intergalactic, so it is a good test song.

I've tried a lot of cheap micro digital amps, including Fosi Audio, Suca Audio, Fx Audio, BRZHIFI, and SMSL. Unfortunately, I've been disappointed with the sound quality. Some of the amps seem to have a weird range of frequencies, and the soundstage doesn't meet my taste. I'm going to be going back to real hi-fi equipment. I'm willing to spend more money to get the sound quality I'm looking for.

The V3 is crap. It may use slightly higher quality components than other amps in this price range but the sound is awful and the power is nowhere near what it is claimed to be. For example, it has nothing like the power of my Quad 303 which is only rated at 2x30 Watts. The bass is really lacking compared to the quad and the clarity of the Fosi is terrible compared. My Quad was made in 1968 and cost me less than the V3.
