    I have been buying products from Dayton for many years. They always give you great value, great service, have knowledgeable people who can help you and if you have a problem they fix it right away, no hassles, no bother. They are my first go to supplier for the products they sell. I'm listening to this on a Lepai 2020A+ right now.

    Nice presentation, I have a dta2.1dt it's new 50w per side and a 100w to slave sub sounds good might be a stretch to call it audiophile but darn good for what it is I run kef c1's and a RadioShack 8 inch sub in a desktop setup my friends are amazed T how good it sounds and no one paid me to say that!

    Thanks Mike! I have really been wanting to pick up one of those 2.1 amplifiers. After hearing such high praise, I might just pick one up. I think some people are under the impression I get paid to do these reviews, I'm sorry if that is the case. I do not get paid to do these, however parts Express does give me products from time to time to do projects with. If I find some I really like, or think others may enjoy knowing about, I review them. But it is always my opinion.

    What you people need to understand is that no amplifier has linear THD (that is, THD which remains the same at all frequencies at all drive levels). All modern solid-state amplifiers (those which employ some form of feedback) have vanishingly low THD at low to moderate power, and then as drive levels increase, at the onset of clipping, they all experience an increase in THD. This is because when the amplifier begins to exhaust the voltage available from the power supply (which is in turn limited to avoid burning out the amp chip due to overcurrent) the amp runs out of available gain to respond to the feedback signal (that is, the feedback signal is what starts to cause the amp to clip first), and then clipping of the input signal component starts to dramatically increase distortion as the amp "hits the rails". This causes the hockey-stick-like ramp in THD vs output power near the amplifier's maximum rated output. Because this ramp in THD has a slope and is not a brick wall, manufacturers can extend the threshold for maximum THD to 10%, and then the amplifier can have a more generous maximum power rating. It's not a very scrupulous tactic, but then competitors are required to either relax their own THD threshold or fall behind in their rated power spec for a given rail voltage. Everyone is just chasing that wattage number. When you consider that most speakers are efficient enough to deliver about 85 dB of acoustic output with 1 watt input, most of your listening is actually done at these very low power levels where THD is low, and only the largest dynamic swings with uncompressed program material could possibly push the amp into an operating region where THD increases for the dynamic peak, then returns to normal for the rest of the playback. I hope this explanation helps to demystify why amplifiers with higher THD specifications at full power don't necessarily sound bad when playing. The DTA120BT is basically the same circuit as the previous DTA120, with an additional specification value provided where the amplifier operates under 0.01% THD.

    rorybz, that's why the old IHF tests were deliberate in linking THD+noise to rated power. Citing the best case scenario is not representative of any real world listening experience. Citing the worst-case is closer to the truth. A simple scalar number is great for marketing purposes. That shouldn't diminish the fact that a wide range of data can help match an amplifier to a purpose. Granted an amp that can track 99.99% of a song is pretty good. OTOH if it falls down on that one transient note, it can ruin the whole performance for some.

    It's like I'm going back in time. Back in the 70's we had the distortion wars. Companies would battle over lowest THD numbers. Of course the more they battled over the number, the worse "some" of their crap sounded. Once THD heads south of 1%, it's not really that different and other factors come into play. I also love that you were so excited about the volume knob being the "on/off" switch as well. Kinda like my Admiral radio from the 60's.

    Oh, please, the fact that you bring up a silly old fashioned notion such as Ohm's Law only proves you are a paid Dayton Audio shill. It lends so much more credibility to criticisms when science mumbo jumbo and any real first hand experience are left absent. All that is necessary is to watch a video of the product on you tube, after all. Enough sarcasm or shall I soldier on? I have to say that I'm shocked by the gentleman who prefers to personally assemble all of his amps with hand picked components when he says he wouldn't be interested in purchasing this item. I really didn't see that coming. OK, that's enough for now. This is actually a very nice little cost effective amp that performs rather well and with many convenient features in my bedroom. I just so happen to have it powering a pair of the very same bookshelf speakers as are in the video with a Dayton 8" 80 watt sub providing the low end. I can testify that the cones of the 4" mids do actually move, despite popular conjecture. If they were completely devoid of all movement, I don't believe they would get quite as loud as they do, well, maybe almost but not equal to. At around $200 shipped I have a very adequate little stereo system that I haven't even yet needed a remote for with my phone and air mouse controlled computer volume tab. To the guy who asked about the wattage at 6 ohms, since it is rated at 60 watts per channel at 4 ohms I would venture a guess of around 45 watts.

    Typically true damping factor is very low on Class D amplifiers. The way they ameliorate that is negative feedback, but then that introduces its own form of distortion, since there's a degree of latency with Class D (It's reconstituted via 'pulses') There's a raging debate still in audio as to Class D being truly 'Hi-Fi' or not. I'll stick with Class AB1 or Class A (which is unnecessarily over the top most times, quality AB1 can sound excellent). There's a reason Class D is still being debated...Get a good second hand quality power amp up to thirty five years old, What was quality back then still is now, but be prepared to replace the power caps with modern dry ones. Any good second hand audio shop will have already done this before resale.

    Doug Strock Because external power supplies are cheaper to throw in than an internal integrated power supply. The external "Power bricks" also don't introduce noise because they're outside the amp. It keeps the cost down and Dayton audio (A.k.a. Parts Express) is able to keep their niche market.

  • @anahatamelodeon

    Part of that expense is that you have to jump though all sorts of regulatory hoops to prove your power supply is safe as a consumer product. Once the third party supplier has got their design certified, they can mass produce it for many customers and spread the design cost.

    This was about as informative as your video on choosing subs. Previously I'd been using a car audio amp for a portable unit with a USB DAC. I also built an adapter for Bluetooth connectivity. Having it all in a unit that's smaller and probably takes less power to run would be nice. I don't really need more than 100Watts for small performances and I've been looking for a good solution for awhile now. The speakers I'm using are custom built using the Hyle transducer tweeters from some old ESS rock monitors pared with 3 Dayton Audio PA310-8 12"s (one configured as a bandpass sub). I'm assuming they have a way to daisy chain those and if it uses Bluetooth 5 or better I know I can. Since I'd imagine the average joe who isn't an audio engineer wouldn't really think about that. You can achieve 3.1 surround with your phone and two of those amps if it's > Bluetooth 5.1 which is how JBL allows the use of multiples of their portable speakers. Check into it, it's a thing. That's why this could be great for the "Flash mob" style party DJ or musician. With a few lithium cells you can have your laptop's reserve and power your gear and it only weighs 5 pounds. Put me down for at least 2...

    Honestly, I am not sure. I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that I am focused on the amplifier and not the speaker itself. It may also have to do with the black on black on black having a hard time really showing the movement. It might also be the lighting. But I am not 100% sure why it had a hard time capturing the woofer movement.

    I have an echo dot and doing the same thing - so far have bought the Lepy LP-A7USB, Lepy-269s, and the Lepai 2020TI. I sent the 269s back. The 2020 has the best sound quality (i bought 4), but is totally manual, where the LP-A7 and 269 has a radio function and a remote! All hooked into the cheapest Dayton Audio speakers they sell - B652's for less than 30 bucks a pair ( I bought 10). They sound good enough for a bedroom, garage, pool, or the home office environments, but I wouldn't use them in my sound room. I use a normal high end HK receiver and quite a few vintage RS series Infinity speakers for that duty. I think a perfectly respectable but compact "dorm" or bedroom type of setup could be had with an echo dot, some DA speakers, and the 2020TI.

Why don't people buy a decent audio set then this. Streaming is ok but why on a cheap Amp ? Buy a good Sony or Technics, Pioneer amplifier for the late 70's or 80's and hook a bluetooth adapter on it aux input, you wil hear so much more quality audio then that Class-D little box. Better buy a nice network receiver that have al streaming options and the most are stil AB class amplifiers but whit more quality and power to drive large speakers. Why are most people listening to crap sound systems I cannot understand how they can say this sounds great like the boombox from JBL or soundbars for movie sound. Smog Audio quality is one place that has degraded with technology, because you CAN"T take short cuts with analog audio. Speakers are analog, your ears are analog and the simplest design with the most noise free components (the most expensive) will reproduce the most "natural sound". Switch mode power supplies are more efficient , but they are NOISY and that is why it is a big no no to ever use them in high end audio, or other sensitive measuring devices which need to be noise free and accurate. You need to listen to some class A amps (no switching distortion) and then class AB (some switching distortion) and then class D (a shit load of switching noise). If you understood electronic and how transistors work, you would know that the most linear (class A, transistors are always on) set up is the best for audio. It is impossible to filter out all the noise from a switch mode (ALWAYS switching and at high frequency) power supply. A linear power supply is way more expensive and heavier than a SW power supply, so don't you think high end manufacturer would use them if they performed as well? A class D amp is a double wammy, because the amp is also switching constantly. The best designs isolate external noise from getting onto the amp circuitry (to only be amplified hundreds of times louder), so sticking a blue tooth antenna into the case (the metal case is what blocks high frequency noise from the environment (wifi and all other noise) is a good way to degrade the sound quality. Convenience and great sound don't mix. High end amps are heavy because they have a big ass linear transformer and big ass heat sinks to dissipate the heat from either class A amps or high biased class AB amps. There aren't any shortcuts to get around that. SW power supplies work great for just about anything were their inherent noise won't be an issue. Audio is definitely not one of them.

  • @gordthor5351

    @gordthor5351

    Jobo so Why would I want a class D amp when they sound harsh? You clearly have never heard a high end class A amp. If you had you wouldn't even look twice at a inferior class D amp. Class D is more efficient (we are talking pennies for the amount of electricity used to listen to music for a few hours}, but it will NEVER sound as good as class A amps. Digital works well with video because it is rendered in digital pixels. Audio is "linear"and thus will only be degraded by digital (chopping it up into bits and then trying to reassemble it without losses (there will ALWAYS be losses unless you have an INFINITE sampling rate (bit rate).

  • @gordthor5351

    SMOG You are the one without a clue. www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/the-truth-about-digital-class-d-amplifiers The bottom line is that even if VERY expensive class D amps can perform even remotely close to high end class A or A/B, the amp in question is a cheap mass market amp, so it will not have audiophile sound, by any stretch of the term, "audiophile". It is typical for class D amps to run out 10 db at 20 hz and that is a pathetic frequency response. They also tend to have very high distortion. Don't be fooled by the sneaky marking claims (specs) by budget companies. They take there readings at 1 watt, while high end companies take "real" readings at "RATED POWER" (full power). If a high end amp is claimed to have 0.03% THD, it does not mean that cheap amp (0.01% THD) has lower distortion, because if the high end amp was taken at the same pathetic 1 watt, it would have 0.000003%. Cheap amp specs are absolutely useless, because they cheat on everything (especially wattage). Who listens to one speaker driven to an insane 10% distortion? Go buy a class D amp, I don't have to listen to it , so I don't hive a shit.

  • @EVnewbie

    @EVnewbie

    5 жыл бұрын

    Gord Thor, Class D amps are not "digital" and never have been. They are switching amps and were invented back in the 1960's. Before you start spewing thechnologically illiterate babble, learn how electronics, physics, recording technology and human anatomy and physiology works. Human hearing is NOT "linear", the brain samples what the ears are doing only 3 times per second and fills the rest in. Human vision is sampled 100 times per second and that is why the brain always goes with what it sees, not what it hears. (Why all audio testing must be blinded) A record at it's best, with a new cutting lathe and measured on the outside tracks gives a resolution of 12 bit. Tape is better than records but does not reach 16 bit in resolution on those big reels. For this reason, digital recording started back in 1979 and took over the industry. If you purchase a record today, it was cut and EQ'd off a digital master. In reality, a human ear can't tell the difference between amplifiers once their distortion drops below 0.1%. You can go 0.0001% if you like but it makes no difference because human hearing is not that accurate AND your speakers put out far more than 0.1% distortion and any decent SPL. I have owned Class A, Class A/B with linear power supplies, Class A/B with switching power supplies, Class G, double rail Class H and several class D amplifiers. As long as they are built correctly (not all of them are) they should and do sound the same. Yes, I took the time and effort to do blind level matched ABCX (three different amps) and four people blew a weekend. Amps, CD player DACs and wires all sound the same and no statistical difference was noted. We blind tested several speakers and there was a huge difference noted as you would expect from speakers--they are at over 1% distortion or higher and us four testers agreed that we tended to prefer speakers that were more accurate. The future in amplification is Class D and chip amps--they have already taken over. Human hearing can't detect sound accurately beyond 105dB--the inner ear muscles tighten up to protect your hearing. Assuming you have a room that is 0 dB silent (underground bunker) once the S/N ratio exceeds 105dB your ears go into protect mode. The best 16 bit processing can do is 115dB and 24 bit goes to 144dB S/N ratio. Even if your house is 10dB of background noise (nuke proof bunker) the standard 16 bit without processing that came out in 1979 is 96dB so add 10 dB of gain to over ride the background noise and you are at 106dB. Now your ears go into protect mode and that destroys any accuracy to detect differences in sound (why THX limits SPL to 105dB peaks) NO amplifier sounds good when it is clipping, they all sound like ass be it Class A, A/B, G, H and D. Tube amps have massive distortion also when clipped but it overloads gracefully and that is why it is used for guitar amps as a sound effect. The fuzz of overdriven tubes sounds much better than the "crunch" of solid state--but it is still distortion. I cheat and use limiters that compress the peaks and inform me of overdriven channels so I can turn the gain down to proper levels. No "crunch" of clipping but compressed peaks don't sound good either...but it is better than clipping. The same complaints you have against Class D is EXACTLY the same complaint the hippies had against the CD when it came out. They did not understand how it worked, refused to learn how digital works and made up a bunch of BS that was laughable as the world moved on. The crap you spew is the same crap the technologically illiterates vomited out 35 years ago--time to get educated so you don't come off as ignorant--only takes 54 minutes. Here is a link that explains how digital recording works kzread.info/dash/bejne/e52O07unlJjNaLA.html

    Sure do talk a lot about the wires. Where is the real review and test? Not just your opinions and taking overrated specs from a product description as fact. Where is the amp dyno and oscilloscope? Most of those mini amps put out about 7 watts before they start clipping and distortion goes through the roof. This one looks less 'made in China' but I doubt that it's any different. Did you open the case and see what chip there're using?

    John Yang Is this a common test for HiFi publications/websites to perform? Do you know of any respectable resource that I can check out for this test?

    High quality audio starts at the source, and many of today's albums are casualties of the compression wars and the awful quality KZread, Pandora, Spotify provides. The eyes say a lot about how an amp will behave...look at the circuit topography of a Sunfire amp compared to most cheap amps. Giant torrid, massive caps, dozens of filter caps, monstrous cooling, symmetrical and divorced channels, and a general sense of beauty. These tiny amps serve their purpose, which is NOT critical listening or reference monitoring at a studio.

    @@itswrongtokillanimalsifyou2837 Start with phase integrity. If you have to ask, I suggest you Google. The answer is complicated and lengthy. One quick hint: Don't trust anything that lacks mass. And rules Class D out...A toroidal power transformer(s) minimizes the weight of a quality power supply, but you can't get around the need for power bulk to get output bulk.

    Lots of figures floating about but no sign of any test gear. A loudspeaker is not test gear. So really completely useless.

    Hey, I'm glad that decent quality is becoming more readily available...but.... This is not high quality. Hopefully your KZread revenue will one day afford you some old altec, ess, dlk, or similar, and a nice class A or AB amp, as well as a CD and record player. Until you have heard bitches brew on equipment that you struggle to lift, your speculating.

    James Smith I know, it's pretty crazy. I should note know if you use the full 60 watts per Channel, you do get distortion. But 40 Watts and under is .01% THD. That seems to be right around three-quarters volume and under

    "That amp basically has no distortion at all." No, it has 0.01% harmonic distortion, only under certain circumstances. That's not zero, and not exceptionally low either. Also, harmonic distortion is only one kind of distortion. Failing to list complete specs usually means that the product doesn't do very well with other tests.

    Rennie Ash, that's an entirely different matter, the snobs who claim to have supernatural hearing far beyond what can possibly be measured, but are afraid to face even the most rudimentary testing lest their claims be laughed out of the room. I know them well. :D
