FINALLY a 2.1 Amplifier with a High Pass! LP210PA Review

Ғылым және технология

2.1 Amplifiers can be great options for small builds. However, the options for a good 2.1 amplifier are few and far between Either they have a low pass or they have a high pass. Rarely do they have both. Introducing a first look at the Lepai LP210PA. A small plate amplifier that has both a high pass to protect your satellite speakers, but also an adjustable crossover for your subwoofer. Take a look and see if this will be useful for your next project.

    I think something like a Sonos PlayBase for a desktop would be awesome and different. It would have enough space to build a modified Voxel sub, and it could be made wide enough to get some decent stereo separation. It could be used as a monitor stand.

    my vote would be for a portable 2.1 with detachable satellites from the sub, kind of like the old boomboxes that you could separate the speakers except in the middle, just the sub. thanks for the review and calling this to our attention, and as always that's for all u do with this channel.

    I would love to see a simple 2.1 system with just 3 drivers and preferably without any additional crossover components. I Personally have thought about making a T-Line Sub with the TCP115-4 4 and ported Satellites with RS100-4 4. I have never build them becorse of the need for a suitabl amplifier that doesn't require additional crossover components. If your interested maybe we can talk a little about the idea.

    Looks like a great product. Thanks for introducing it! My idea for your project is a portable speaker with detachable satellite speakers. I had boom box like that back in the 80's. Very handy for portable sound that can also be left in place and separated for better imaging. Cheers!

I am still a noob, I have skills, but I'm not at the level to know how to add Bluetooth to this plate. It doesn't have to be a complete build, perhaps you could make a video showing a few options on how to make this plate Bluetooth. Myself and so many other people I know prefer portable Bluetooth. Anything that you could provide would be awesome! You are the man! We appreciate you.

One thing I need to figure out-pros and cons of 2 way vs 2.1. Lots of options so that’s awesome! Also figuring out power short comings. Should be fun !

    Nice! That will be a fun project! A high pass filter is designed to cross your main speakers over. This helps the speakers from playing the frequencies while protecting smaller speakers. Just keep in mind, this has a high pass at around 100hz, so your main speakers won't play much bass, that'll be left to your subwoofer.

Would I have stereo sound if I go to the tweeter and the other l/r channel to a full range? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Here is my idea. A portable system housed in a plastic milk crate. You can put it in your car, garage, worksite, picnic. The challenge is to shoehorn sub, satelites, bluetooth adapter and batteries into the space. My Logitech Z623 woofer takes up nearly all the space in one Australian milkcrate. I think with a smaller sub like your 3 inch printed sub you might have room for the rest. Ill try to post a photo I took.

    Regards. Very convenient video. One question, in the line in/line out section(RCA ports) can I take the line out signal to feed active audio monitors? In the RCA line in port, I connect the audio source, and the crossover of the plate amplifier (LP210PA) takes the low frequencies of the line in signal for the subwoofer, and the rest of the frequency range goes out through the RCA line port out. It's right? Thanks.

    Just in time! I just finished a design for a large boombox with 8" sub, sat speakers etc. and am looking for a TPA3116 chip 2.1 board to power it. I'm sure Lepai will add bluetooth etc. or come out with a enclosed amp box for that design. Very interested in a boombox type/2.1 channel setup and would like to know what the power output and at what ohms it can handle. My main speakers will be 4 ohms and the 4 ohm sub as well (12 volt car battery with 24V DC booster board) Pondering if the LP210 PA can run on regular 12V in case I want to add an external battery pack that won't handle the booster--thanks for taking an educated look at the component, looking forward to your results.

  • @Toid

    @Toid

    5 жыл бұрын

    The LP210PA isn't rated to run off 12v. However, you can still use a 12v battery on it You will just want to run a boost converter to get it to 15v. Boost converters are typically pretty cheap. You can easily add a small bluetooth fm board with aux in for relatively cheap as well, if you wanted to choose this option.

  • @EVnewbie

    @EVnewbie

    True. I was looking at the 3116 2.1 boards with bluetooth that run on 9 to 26V--looking for a true two-way crossover at 80 to 100Hz--still looking! Knowing Lepai, they will have a version 2 of the plate amp eventually. Maybe for version 2 they could upgrade the inductors and put some heatsinks--or, better yet, heatsink the chips to the plate for better cooling. My Lepai 2020+ is still running fine with daily use for the past several years so I'll watch to see what they do. Keep up the good work!

    I have a non-powered low-profile "subwoofer," called a CSI SW-850. I'm guessing the model number means that it's an 8" woofer, and it's rated at 50 watts max. It looks like it's designed to be slid under a piece of furniture or something; the cabinet is about 8" high. I found it out on the street as someone was discarding it. I took it home, it sounded horrible, but that was because its frequency wasn't cut off at all, it was just running free. I would like to add a power amp to it to use with some satellite speakers I already have. This is an appealing amp because of the high-pass filter for the satellites, but you didn't mention whether it also has a low-pass filter, which I clearly need in this case. I don't want this thing trying to sound above the woofer range. Should I assume that a subwoofer plate amp necessarily does limit the upper end? Or is this just not the right amp for the purpose?

  • @SharkRangler

    This would be awesome if they would make it to where you could mount the volume somewhere other than the back of the sub. I would like to use this with my record player setup, but I don't want to have to reach around the back to change the volume. Or on a sound bar for the TV, same issue. Maybe a preamp setup would be work around of this problem.

You will need to add proper connector rated for mains voltage on back or pass cable through cabinet. Transformers are rarely used on class d amps and i rarely see them on cheaper amplifiers.

    I'm using this in a 2.1 System and it tends to make some noise when there is silence. Is this normal or is it maybe the power supply? Any tips?

  • @Toid

    It's a pretty silent amplifier. I mean if you stick your head all the way up against it or have it up entirely two loud, I'm sure there's some noise. But it's pretty quiet. It's hard to say for sure, but it definitely could be the power supply.

    For simplicity sake, you would just use this plate amp in each speaker. And just use one channel for the full range. If you want help with it, you should check out my new DIY forum. There's a ton of people , myself included that could help advise you. www.toidsdiyaudio.com/community

    123Toid+ I read up and found examples of strapping one TPA3116 chip together is 100watt mono for the left channel and have a second chip strapping that together for a right channel makes 200watts and it doesn't need any more voltage or amperage than one chip alone. Using a single 24v power supply @ 4.17Amp runs 100watt fine, what I find interesting is you can use the same power supply to achieve 200watt so where does it get the energy to make the extra 100 watts? You would think 24v @ 8.33amp would be needed, but no. Same thing applies to this chip amp, it only needs the power to supply one chip 15v @ 4amp = 60 watts, but it some how manages to put out twice the wattage including the sub chip = 120 watt should need 15v @ 8amps =120watts. To me, this is bizarre. The most crazy part is you could make a quadraphonic board using the same power supply and it maintains the same quality. This is perfect for surround sound say you want a 2.1 or 2.2 @ 400 watt you would need 4 chips 1 for the left, one for the right and 2 for the subs and the sub would need either 2 sub speakers even in the same enclosure would be fine, but you should use a boarder for separation or have 2 separate, but I wouldn't suggest a dual voice coil like this guy does being most recordings the bass, midi, keyboards and bass kick drum are normally panned dead center, but could be panned left to right really fast or the bass could be left 10% and the double kick could be left and right 25% in some cases, I don't know how that single DVC sub woofer would respond to that. Here's one example of a 200watt version. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKlpr6WIfLmenNI.html

    24v 4.17A won't be enough to get 2x100W outputs. You need more power in than out, almost 10A. With 24v 6a transformer i only can draw 2x60w on my tda7498 amplifier (which is rated 2x100w). For music it's enough to peak at that 100w but if there is steady bass it just won't be enough.

  • @Toid

    2 жыл бұрын

    I don't. Typically when the clones come out, they use inferior parts. They'll look the same, but they'll be out of spec from what the original is. This is burned a lot of people when they try to buy ice power amplifiers overseas. But I don't have any direct experience with it, so I can only speak in generalities.
