Is it 200 watts or 320 watts? Lepai LP1601S Amplifier Review and Test

Ғылым және технология

The Lepai LP1601S is Lepai's latest amplifier and fits in the higher end of mini home amps. It sells for just under $100 USD and is stated to be a "200 watt Class D amplifier", yet the manual states the amp is capable of 160x2 at 10% THD. Class D design offers high efficiency and decent sound quality in a small package. The amp has RCA and Bluetooth capability and can drive most speakers for room-filling sound. Back to the wattage ratings, you know we are going to test and see what it really does...let's find out together!

Most impressive to me is that each channel is so close, to spot-on watts equally. I'd never run it to max, so the THD would be a lot lower at reasonable listening levels.

the included PSU is 32V @ 3A, or 96watts, so the fact that you could get close to 150watts out of it before the overcurrent limit kicks in is pretty impressive. I also expect there was some sag in it's output voltage at that power level as well. I bet if you ran at 70W/ch you'd see the brick get very hot, and probably shutdown on thermal at some point. at 32V input to get 320Watts out you'd need 10A input.

I have the last generation of this amp(silver one) and it's made it into multiple boom box projects of mine simply by virtue of it being so versatile. I had the same issue with a small bit of black noise with the supplied power brick, but when I hooked it to a 24 v werker sealed lead acid battery, noise went away. Thanks for the video man, these amps are a great diy bargain.

In amps for sale in the EU, the binding posts are not allowed to be spaced according to the spacing required for dual banana plugs, because some European power cords with round pins use exactly the same spacing, and the profoundly efficient rule-makers in the EU government don't want people getting the two confused with each other. So even most new high-end amplifiers don't use the standard spacing.

I had one of these in my living room and it is an awesome deal for the money... Lepai, Breeze Audio, Nobsound and Fx Audio use the same design and chips... These little amps love 4 ohm speakers and they get LOUD...Sound quality is pretty good, mids and highs are awesome, and the bass is acceptable(yes it can slam, but it doesn't really have a great controll of the speaker when it starts playing lower than 40-35hz as you need really big capacitors(power reserves) for that)...Honestly it can easly replace 95% of the low to mid end hifi amps/receivers... Now i use JVC-RS33(class A) which is one of the most powerfull receivers of that time and it doesn't get that loud but it has a little more dynamics( but ofc it is like 20 times bigger and it weights 12kg)

Another stellar job! Very informative! I was gonna bet that the amp wouldn't be able to do the advert specs even @ 10% distortion. Wow..one of the first Chinese Class D amps that was worth it's salt. I know you limited distortion to only 1%, pretty darn good. I would have liked to see the test w/the high power battery @ 8 ohms. No biggie. Always enjoy seeing amps tested in real life. Thanks again!

If you have a way to test thermals you should try OEM Vs. High Quality non-conductive Thermal Paste on the Amplifier Chip to see if any real gains could be made in the thermal department to more effectively dissipate heat into the Heat Sink since it is passively cooled.

Most of these amps I've seen that carry an external power transformer/rectifier package connection have cheaped out on the included ones. By the time you add the cost of a quality one in to reach the advertised power ratings, you reach the same cost as typical big-name amps with internal power guts.

75 WPC with the included power supply is actually pretty good. It's a tiny amp that could be velcro mounted to the back of one of a book shelf speaker in the pair. I have the Lepai LP-168HA 2.1 amp that I've been using on my pc for over 2 years now. Yeah, the PSU can output an absolute maximum (on paper) of 108w. It won't, or shouldn't, be a problem for music since you're not playing pink noise at maximum volume, and the likelihood is, the capacitors in the PSU will allow higher current/wattage bursts to handle the transients in music.

The heat sink in one of the important part of operating an amp, and im glad coz aside from the heat sink inside the bottom of the amp serves as its heat sink to. Coz at first im wondering where the heat will exit coz there's no ventilation. If i own one i would upgrade a little like putting a hole or something for the heat to exit from its cabinet.

These amps are almost always limited by the voltage and current available from the power supply. Also, power for these commodity chips is normally rated at 10% THD. Class-D chips tend to have very low THD up to a "knee" where the onset of clipping occurs, then they rise rapidly, but the benefit of this is that the 1% or 0.1% THD power output is not very much less than the rated power rating. Also, your speakers are usually generating much more THD than the amplifier, even at the amplifier's full rated power.

All but one where chinese diy boards but one was an expensive designer amp. The big tripath chips have been the best as opposed to the surface mount amps. Hi ! thank you very much for the very interesting demo as always. Personally i would not overestimate the BT issues ... to get decent sound a dedicated receiver can be the best solution. And if wifi is available a Chromecast audio will be on another planete. I would how this amp would sound with a nice Meanwell smps (great quality usually) Moreover i think that not only voltage is important but also the ampere delivered by the power supply. That is very evident also for normal amps. Replacing a small mains transformer with a higher VA one with same voltage the sound comes alive more. At least this is my experience. I think that the power solution adopted can have a decisive impact on sound quality In the end the amp is like a tap ... if there is no enough "pressure" upstream the flow to the speakers will be scarce Kind regards, gino

Big D Wiz You know I’m a frequent viewer and I truly like your channel & video’s although I truly doubt this thing does anywhere near 200-300 Watts. Also, Yes I’m responding before finishing the video because I will be truly dumbfounded if this tiny amp makes almost double the power of my Denon 5803 that is 10x the size of this and it makes 170 watts per channel. Also have you ever heard of the pioneer 1980 ? It is a silver face receiver from late 1970’s and it was like the king of power receivers with 270 watts per channel at less than 0.03 distortion. So I guess you already get where I’m going with this, why would these home receivers that cost $5000+ that are considered flagship put out less power than this tiny “pocket” sized amp ??? Maybe you know more about this than I do. Great video btw 👍

  • @1silvervespa

Supplied power supply provides lower power which might extend it's life . Running it on higher voltage might very likely shorten it's life as it will run hotter . Also why not add some Vent holes simply remove the covers and drill a series of holes in the sides and top to allow air flow. Add some fine mesh inside to keep dust out . ( even if your not increasing the voltage ) In a small space this amp is plenty loud Dorm rooms for example you will not likely max it out . A musician friend uses one and finds it plenty for his small space.

Still lots of people buying this type of amp for various uses. Would be interested in seeing some tests of perhaps some other similar items. Lots of KZread reviews of this type of product with no real value, would be great to see actual real tests vs the hey look it makes noise.

Connect 1 amp per speaker (1 amp lft spkr/ 1 amp for right spkr) Would sound/pwr be louder? Would it be considered as Monoblock amp? My JBL 4311's require pwr to turnover.

Please explain how you measure the watts, peak power does not count, watts are in RMS. To get true watts use an external wattmeter, also tell us the current that is in the speaker wires powering a 8 ohm speaker.

Was hoping for review of sound quality. i.e. does 1% refer to intermod or harmonic distortion ? Looks too high except for boom boxes. Power at say 0.1% tot dist would be a more useful amplifier metric than max power.
