Best Cartridges for Killing Deer 2024! Who Is The NEW #1?
Navigating the landscape of whitetail cartridges is a walk in the park with a plethora of top-notch choices at hand. Yet, earning a fellow hunter's nod of approval can prove to be more of a high-stakes game.
However, it's rare to find hunters testing various cartridges on multiple deer. Often, a single challenging hunt can demonize a cartridge, while repeated successful experiences with another can inadvertently elevate it to an undeserved pedestal.

Have a 308Win, 270Win, 6.5 Creedmore, 350 Legend, and 9mm, 357magnum, and 45 Colt carbines. They all drop the game animals in their effective ranges.
My daughter has taken !0-12 deer with her 243. 80 grain ttsx. All have dropped within 50 yds. Perfect combo!
Get rid of .223 and .243 and replace them with .270 & .308 and your list is fixed. Also 6.5 has an argument but I think 7mm mag or 300 mag might be in there instead of 6.5 just because of longevity.
You forgot the 270 Winchester...

The .308 is by far the most versatile. In factory offerings, you can handle so many variables, distance, weight, bullet weight, size of target ... anything from something close and small to long distance and large and in between. It's offered in every platform from low end to ultra high end, bolt, single, lever, and AR ... what more could you possibly ask of a single caliber.

@Clawson_customs really the 30-06 ... it's a great round, but it's not plentiful, it's a long action round, the .308 can take any north American game with ease and at distance, the factory loads are decent, some are great, it's everywhere and any .308 can fire 7.62x51 so there's it's versatility, and it works well in various platforms, far superior to your 30-06, so you're wrong, I know you don't know you are, but you are ... sorry and any other calibers you dare bring up, will lack in one area if not others, i.e. .. weight, range, power as in powder charge ... we're not talking paper we're talking actual targets whether hunting, defending either/or ... the .308 has heavy/ slower, faster/lighter and everything in between ... and if you want to further I'll say anything 300 yds and less the 7.62x39 is perfect its not sniper accurate, who cares, I can put 5 in 2in at 250yds with an sks, better with a 7.62x39 bolt ... the bs 300 blk out is 7.62x35 .. allegedly loaded for being suppressed , I don't need a suppressor, if shtf suppressors wouldn't be a concern, and 300 blk is expensive and difficult to find, 7.62x39 is again plentiful, out there, available and WORKS, in my military background, we went with what WORKS .. and those 2 rounds WORK and have for decades they're proven in field and fight, hell I even gave up my precious love for .40 s&w and went with 9mm, again plentiful, available affordable and new loads abd bullets WORK ... if it ain't broke don't fix it, Creedmoor is a competition round , it's light fast and accurate, has no weight, no mass, won't drop a heavy target at distance, I use that just as an example, like the .350 legend, it's slow very heavy and outside 250yds pretty useless (in application) they don't "WORK" ...

I realize how old i am watching this. I have experience with most of these chamberings. There's nothing in this I would dispute. As a reloader, my preference is a model 70 featherweight in 7x57. Although I hunt out west where distance is more of an issue, my 270 really shines in this environment. The old 3030 served me well in the hills of Pennsylvania where i used to live before i retired.

I also like the 7x57 Mauser ...IMHO ...with 175 grain hand loads it is the perfect Eastern whitetail cartridge .
There are too many rounds to just have five right now. Easier to say 308 family of bullets, 30-06 family of bullets etc. hope you all have a great 2023 season.
The biggest whitetail I ever shot was with a 243 Winchester, high shoulder shot with a 100 gr nosler partition! He was going down and recovered , never bled a drop , now in the woods I use the old 30 30 Winchester with Winchester 150 gr hollow points and they don't take a step! God bless and good hunting to you all!

LoL. That's right. .30-06 is flat murderous on deer. You can shoot a deer with one. And the first thing to hit the ground will be the deer's taste buds.
I have 3 bolt action rifles (1 chambered in 7mm-08 rem. and 2 in .308 win). I love the mild recoil as I am a small frame hunter. I have also taken a deer with an AR-15 chambered in .223rem with a 55 grain frangible bullet. Which one is my favorite? Depends on where and how I am hunting! All of the cartridges you listed are capable of taking deer sized game. Shot placement is the key !!!
This is the first time I have to completely agree with you. Good video.
I am an old goat. And I have killed a lot of deer. I haven't killed a deer with a 6.5 Creedmoor but I have no doubt about it getting the job done. I have used a variety of different calibers over the decades. But I like the .308 Winchester. The 7mm08 Rem is a great deer killer as well. A friend of mine's whole family uses 6.5 Creedmoor and they kill a bunch of deer. I wouldn't use a .223 Remington. There are too many better choices in my opinion. It is hard to beat a .270 Winchester firing a 130 grain Nosler Partition. That combination will lay a deer flat at the impact. This video should have had two dozen different rounds on it if the intent was to give real advice.
Im a big fan of the 270, 280 308 and the 300 WSM. Not a fan of the 6.5 CM .
Seems every few months a new cartridge comes along that we may be told makes all of ours obsolete. As for me, it may be grandad's 30-30 Winchester lever or dad's 35 Remington this year is heading to the fields and woods.

I am always of the opinion in the KISS principle, keep it simple stupid. Best cartridges , 30-06 designed 1906, 308 Winchester or 7.62 NATO designed in 1954 or 358 Winchester, 35 Whelen - 400 Whelen, designed in the 1920's by Frank Howe. Just a neck up from the 30-06. Thats it, thats all you need or want. I like medium bores.
They all work fine.
🕵️♂️ Just because you aren't shooting over 400 yards, doesn't mean that bullet choice/construction isn't important! 🤯
6.5 creedmore is not all that flat shooting unless you are putting it next to 30-30 or 45-70. the Creedmore does check a lot of boxes for most deer hunters so i can see why its so popular. MY top deer rounds Inside 300yards I still am liking the 6.8spc but the 6 ARC has a lot going for it both are great for youth hunters. Hunting dense woods or need strait wall then 350 legend. Hunting open plains and need some range 25-06, 6.5 PRC, 270win, 280AI, and if you still think you need more 7 Rem Mag.

308 should be on the. List before 223 223 is way to light
I've shot them all, and don't dispute anything in this video. Over the years I've gained an affinity for the .264 Winchester out of my pre-64 model 70; and for my old Mannlicher Shoenauer chambered in 7x64 Brenneke. Be that as it may, all of these will do the job in experienced hands. Thanks for the video.
.356 Winchester is hard to beat. Winch made a small run then discontinued them back in the '80's. With a short, compact model 94 they hit like a ton of bricks. Good brush rifle, not intended to shoot through brush as many might think, but short barrelled for manoeuverability and ease of carry. It's a hard trade off to find something better unless you're just looking for additional range, then the 280 express would also be a good choice.

The 223 does not belong on this list. It will work, so will a sharp stick, but it's little bitty bullets just don't give you enough for quick kills. Many kids in my part of the woods have lost deer with them.
@winstonjones7519

Thank you for this. I have deer hunted for decades. And killed a lot of deer. I can't understand why someone would use a .223 Rem for deer hunting. Maybe deer shooting, where they were shooting off a tripod or something. When I shoot a deer I want the impact and wound channel to look like I meant business. A .308 / .30-06, 7mm08 / .280 Rremington does that. They mean business. They leave a blood trail a blind man could follow. If it is even necessary.
It is obvious you prefer the 6.5 PRC and have heartburn with the 308. But you are confused about the recoil as the 308 has less recoil than the 6.5 PRC. Feel free to watch MDT Sporting Goods video “How much do different calibers recoil?”

What about the 270 wsm for deer ????
so many variables especially comfort in shooting, low weight for some types of hunting means oppressive recoil with some rifles and cartridge choice. getting ammo has been a major factor. the 30/06 is too big and heavy recoil for deer sorry too difficult for many. not a fan of the AR15 223. distance makes a massive difference in suitable choices. no way a 30/30 works as a choice over 200 yards for most.
The Win 308 is still the best hunting cartridge for hunting deer or any other North American game.

Cartridges like the 6.5x55 and 260 Remington have been around for decades and worked very well but have not reached the "level" that the 6.5 creedmoor has. So what is it about the 6.5 creedmoor that makes it such a superior cartridge?
@sweetteaoutdoors

Nothing!It is a mundane cartridge.
How about the 280 Remington ? 30/06 power with the superior ballistics of the 7mm bullets !
A list for 2023 should factor in ammo availability. Some of these cartridges are getting hard to find. So the list is invalid to start. All these rounds are "adequate," but many better rounds exists that are far more available.
Past time for new calibers. It's likewatching the same old episodes of gunsmoke.you can only run everything thru ringer so many times
223 diameter bullets don't make big enough hole to track deer.
Killed a four year old Bull Elk with the 30/30 using 140gr monoflex from Hornady. Balistic Gel testing wound channels are on par with Federals Power Shock 150gr at 100 yards but with 300 yard capabilities.
Don't like tracking deer. So I use 358 Winchester or 350 Remington magnum with 180gr. Speer flat points in the thick stuff. 270Winchester in the open fields.
6.5 PRC is my top pick. Basically a 6.5 Creedmoor Magnum. 6.5 PRC is good for everything from roe deer up to moose.

Over a 50% reduction in my opinion. . (vs. '06)
Debating over the best deer caliber is an inherent part of hunting traditions and an utmost controversial activity ! To me it's undoubtedly the .243 : low recoil, flat trajectory, high velocity, powerful enough terminal energy and perfect accuracy !
I've been hunting for many years best cartridges you can have for deer is one that you know and that you're good at making proper shot placement plain and simple no ifs ands or buts about it I don't care what didn't you cry baby say
308
A biased opinion, different strokes for differen folks, I'll stick to what I know & if you roll your own, everything is crucial, tailor to your needs, Ret. Vet. 🍻
I like my .308
Very irresponsible putting the 223 on this list. It doesnt even make the top 50. Just because it can kill a deer doesn't mean its amongst the top choices. With good placement a 22lr can kill a deer but I'm not going to claim it's the second best round.
284 winchester
Ive shot a LOT of different rifles over the past 30 years. For 300 yds and under, I prefer a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC with th correct monolithic hollowpint. Almost zero recoil, will fit in an AR platform, shoots just as flat as a 6.5 Creedmore, kills just as fast as a 30-06, and is an absolute tack driver. If you're limited to 200 yds or less, then a 300 blackout with a 120 or 125gr bullet is hard to beat. Its not a tack driver, but its cheap to shoot and very versatile. Beyond 300 yds, id probably go with a 260 AI, or a 280 AI if elk is an option. Will a 223 kill a whitetail using the right bullet? Yes. In southern states where the deer are small, its fine. In the midwest, where mature bucks field dress over 200 lbs, its definitely less than optimal. Hunters who like it are hunting states where the deer arent much bigger than a German Sheppard.
50 bmg dont let them move unless the bullet makes the deer move lol
What about 25.06
You only showed 7 cartridges in the photo.
there is no #1 it,s the finger and the brain that controls it .
Very biased re[port with no mention of the newer straight walled cartridges either.
No 308 or 270 your just talking about rounds you like and killed deer with that be like me saying the 30-06,308,30-30,303British and 6.5creed are the best cuz i own and killed deers with them rounds, first is shot placement and a deer hunting bullet and most center fire rifles are good deer guns i would take the 223 off the list unless the shots are lil more then 100 yards or less but 223 im not taking deer hunting
