The Best Deer Cartridge Is? | Spaghetti Shootout Ep. 5
On this deer-themed episode, Ryan butts in on the validity of the Butt Out Tool, the guys debate the best deer cartridge, and surprise-trivia catches them off guard. Are Mark’s answers close enough to “scrape” out a win or does he once again leave the studio “rubbed” the wrong way? “Tine” in for the answer to this question and a whole lot more.

Meatball question: If you had to compare your opponent to a Vortex optic, what would they be and why?
@chadillac95

Oh that's a good one
You should do a rifle cartridge draft. Just like an NFL Draft and try to determine a winner after 10 rounds. Once a caliber is chosen it is off the table. Trades available. Team colors are Mark and Ryan’s favorite Camo patterns. Mascots are their favorite Vortex rifle scopes. Jimmy is commissioner and interviews the coaches on their draft pick.
"I didn't like the way I felt while I was using it" - Hahahahahahahaha pure gold
Ryan said it a few pod casts back that the hottest, ramped up 6.5creed doesn’t compare to the most average .270win. Great show guys! Cheers from Canada eh 🍻🇨🇦🤘

Well it all depends on range, because of the higher BC's of the 6.5 it will eventually outrun the .270 And the Creedmoor has the added benefit of less recoil, and (for me) MUCH easier to find ammo. I can only think of one store within 50miles of me that regularly has .270 in stock, meanwhile I can walk into any one of a dozen stores within 15miles and find a smattering of creedmoor ammo. The older cartridges are dying out unless you shop online or visit stores more specifically dedicated just to hunting. 6.5Creed is chambered in AR's, SCAR's, hunting rifles, match rifles, you step into a gun store and practically trip over something chambered in 6.5Creed. .270 is nowhere near as popular anymore. I'm not saying it's a bad round, it's EXCELLENT at hunting anything up to elk within 400yds (potentially further with the right bullet and good glass) but the Creedmoor and its PRC cousins have made a serious case for replacing or just becoming to modern "go-to" over a lot of older cartridges for newer shooters.

@@bodiewest9202 not near me, I can occasionally find .30-06, but I haven't seen a box of .270 in any store in probably 2 years. 6.5 Creedmoor however is always available in multiple "flavors". Most stores near me lean much more toward the "tactical" realm, but even sporting goods stores that stock "hunting" chamberings like .270 and such don't have it. I do have a bass pro that's not terribly far, but between their prices being retardedly high and me not needing anything they sell I haven't been there since shortly after it opened in like 2017 so they may have stuff like .270 but I wouldn't know.

.270 Winchester best deer cartridge, end of argument
Good job gents, one of your best videos yet 👍 The question if I had to choose just one, is a choice I had to make last year when we moved in November, in had my choice of .44 magnum, 45-70, and 6.5 creedmoor in the white tail woods. I chose the .44 mag lever action. This year it's the 45-70.
Great concept, love the podcast! Gotta go with Ryan on this one.

I’m afraid of horses and I have to agree with Ryan the model 70 is the rifleman‘s rifle. However the Winchester model 98 lever action has to be the most iconic deer gun. Because not all hunters want to be riflemen they just want a freezer full of deer.

Meatball Question: for Shotgun/Pistol only areas, AR pistols are quickly becoming popular. How about debating an accurate, “far” shooting (for a slug) setup like a Savage 220 20ga bolt gun vs AR Pistol setups being used for faster bullets, capacity, and sometimes more range
30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor are not the only cartridges I have but they are my favorites.
Meatball question: do you keep broken arrows if they broke during the process of harvesting an animal you're proud of, or "retire" an arrow/broadhead if they're part of a good hunting memory?
06 over the .308 Ryan?! Fame has changed you 😂
My question submission is this: You've freed a Genie from his lamp, but he doesn't give you anything you want, but a choice. He'll rearrange and get you any firearms you'd like, but they have to stick to one of two philosophies. Would you like a collection adequate power, but a lot of capacity? Or would you prefer extreme, maybe even over powered, but low capacity? The choice would swap out every gun in your safe for this philosophy, and would affect everything from your carry weapon to your red dawn weapon to whatever niche or mainstream hunting you enjoy.
Even though I don't have one, the Model 94 Winchester in 30-30 is THE iconic deer rifle. Marlin 336 probably second. Yes the model 70 is the "Rifleman's Rifle" and your 760 is fast with both being available in long range, more powerful, flat shooting cartridges but the 94 was taking deer thirty-one years before the Winchester Model 54 and 42 years before the model 70 was introduced. Of course Savage had its models 1895, 1899 and 99 which were very successful and its model 192O bolt action which was not a big commercial success but definitely ahead of its time and not basically copies of the '98 Mauser like the '03 Springfield and the two Winchester bolt actions.
You guys rock! Thanks for the shoutout!!!!

In my experience, moose whitetail, hog, caribou, bear coyote all hate it. Just saying🤷♂️
FYI. Butt Out was a great gift exchange for you work, especially for those who don't hunt. Instructions on package was a big hit.
The 308 Winchester! You get that 30 caliber bullet without the recoil the 30/06 gives you and it’s good out to around 350-400 yards witch is as far as anyone should be shooting at deer anyway!
Hear is a good one for a topic. GPS or compass
1) people love to bash the creed but it’s actually pretty solid for deer. Nothin like the 25-06 though 🤓 2) wait so is there going to be an asterisk next to Mark’s win column since Ryan so graciously awarded Mark 3 points on accident?
300 HAMR leads the way. Medium sized game can be easily killed by rounds that seem "too small" and also "too big". Find a platform that works for you and train the hell out of it in the conditions where you expect to get your kill. Most people don't train enough so they end up using particular accessories or trendy cartridges as a crutch.

Meatball question(s): what meat makes the best meatballs. Boxers or briefs and 9mm or 45 ACP
Fun episode.
Of course any decent calibre with good shot placement at the right distance will take deer down. But if I had to choose only "one" calibre for all deer species it would be my 7mm-08. Low recoil, broad load-range and good enough BC and still carries enough energy past 500-600 yards to take down a buck although idk why anyone would wanna shoot that far out but if you really had to it can get it done. For me hunting is all about trying to get as close as you can to the game you're trying to bag.
A Savage 99 in .308 Win. Iron sights. Lever action. Iron sights. Detachable mag. Irons sights. Can have a scope mounted. Iron sights. Wood and blued combo. Did I say iron sights?
Meatball of the month topic suggestion : best handgun and cartridge combo to hunt all but the very largest North American game? (Doesn't have to be suited for large moose, bear, etc)

Meatball topic: If you're opponent was a hipster cartridge, which would they be and why is the 308 better?
M1 Garand is the best deer rifle ever. 8 rounds of 30/06 as fast as you need them out of the best open sights ever fielded on a rifle. Change my mind….
@JamesWillmus

I love the M1, but any decently built bolt action is tougher, lighter, more accurate, and safer. Semi-auto rifles, even the M1 have problems in the cold. It's not exactly a weather sealed design.
great score for Mark
Meatball question: fixed blade or folding blade for field dressing?
Meatball question: You can only hunt one more time for the rest of your life, but you’re given the opportunity to hunt anywhere/any animal. Where do you go?
Meatball.243 the best deer and all-round gun.for the north American hunter.
Mark said 6.5 over 30-06 but then chooses the Remington 760 because it comes in 30-06, 270, 308…😂 and nothing says deer rifle more than those cartridges. Total contradiction!
My 25-06 drops deer instantly in their tracks but my 270 and 308 make it even more dead
Meatball: What camera do you take in the field to take pictures/video and who would have the most selfies at the end of the day?
Meatball Question: during a days hunt, who would eat all of their snacks first/what snacks are they eating/and why did they eat them? Bonus question: who takes the first nap of the day?-
When is that 7 PRC 10 minute talk coming? Gotta be soon
Mark doesn't seem to understand that 30-06 was determined to be the most an average soldier could stand without flinching in an era when the average soldier was about 5 feet tall

@@sauerkrautjr possibly. I'm not 100% sure about the height number either, I just know it was a bit lower than now. And men worked harder back then, that's for sure, so I guess they had more muscle. TOPICS: Best long range cartridge for competition, best overall cartridge company for accuracy in all calibers, best dog breed for hunting, bipod or sandbag, best scope magnification for 22LR
.270 for deer , hands down !
7mm-08 Remington
Most iconic deer rifle is marlin 336
Meatball question: if this is a spaghetti shootout, what sauce is Mark and Ryan platting?
First of all "long range deer gun" is 300-500 yards and you shouldn't be shooting that far unless the deer is wounded. You could be a military sniper and I wouldn't care, limit your shots to a reasonable distance. Second, come on Mark, 6.5 creedmoor? The cartridge is powerful enough, sure, but the bullets you find off the shelf are horrible for hunting. Anything in the 308 family, and anything in the 30-06 family will perform much, much better.
Henry long ranger 308 like to hear about waiting for my dealer to get one in
Meatball question: if you could hunt any animal regardless of cost and time, what would it be?
REM 600. 350 rem mag. Can’t beat it.
28:05 8. 8 months. 30 days. 8 months. = 240. You don't need a calculator, they teach basic math here in Canada.
Meatball of the Month question: John Wayne or Clint Eastwood?
Winchester 94 in30/30
I think that at modest distances, it's hard to beat the good ol 308! I'm in Missouri, so it is possible to reach out to 500 or so over a field or something. However, I'm usually hunting think timber (oak and cedars mostly). My average shot is within 200 yards. I like bullets in the 165gr range typically. Other than the 308, I love a 30-06 or a 270 sometimes. Maybe even a 22-250, 223, 243, etc
