I've been waiting for this to go on sale and I think I'll finally pull the trigger and get it. My Yankee thriftiness prevents me from getting newly released, sometimes buggy games at full price when I can wait for it to go on sale after the developers have ironed out everything. After immensely enjoying UG: Civil War it's time to get my sea legs watching tutorials fittingly given by a Britisher.

@@SimUKReviews The land combat I'm not a stranger to-it's learning how to sail, keep your broadsides outputting enemy damage while in turn not getting wrecked from longitudinal fire. I'm trying to figure out if going for the masts/sails to kill mobility with focus fire is worth the misses of getting consistent hull hits.

Thanks for the video, great advice to get me started. I agree on the AI controls, I've also found the it to be a bit weak. It's passable at attacking, but I've never successfully had the AI board an enemy vessel...

Yeah whenever I have the AI take control of one of my ships they tend to run aground.

Just so you know, you made it much harder for yourself since you kept treating 'running with the wind' as 'dead wind' you had it backwards nearly the whole time. I didn't get to the very end so perhaps you realized but the beginning you had it backwards. Hope it helps

@@SimUKReviews Yes, it would be a lot of work, but I would re-do the entire video, correcting this error. One of the main points of playing an age-of-sail game is to keep the wind's direction in minf at all times. Having this backwards for a majority of this video would cause more grief than good.

I think the circle on the water around your ship is the wind direction/speed.. Sailing into the green is best, yellow is ok/mid range and red is slow to stop with a poor amount of wind hitting the sails.... I don't play this game yet, just seams like what I noticed watching others play.

Thanks Jonathan. As I understand it the circle represents your ship armour, but I will take another look at it because in reality I don't ever use it and wish I could remove it completely...I must also see if I can do that lol.

@@SimUKReviews no its not the armour, its like the fellow said the wind direction. Armour doesnt move around your ship, you dont have your weakspot in the back suddenly changing to one and just one of your sides only by changing the direction of your ship and all that without the first shot of a battle even fired.

Stay on top of the wind. When you are on top of the wind, your enemy has to climb to you against the wind.

From the PS5 Dashboard, navigate up to the Settings icon in the top right. Press X to select, and then choose Network. From here, head to Connection Status and then View Connection Status. In this menu, you'll see NAT Type and you can freely change between all available settings.

It used to be called taking the weather gauge. The British had an almost mythical ability to do it back in the day

I think you had it backwards, the arrow on the compass shows the direction of the wind not the opposite of the direction of the wind, you can tell by looking at the flags on the ship. That's why you weren't maneuvering as well as you wanted to, I'm pretty sure the battle would have had the exact opposite conclusion otherwise. The game looks awesome though I will definitely play it in the future. While we're on the subject of Naval tactics, I forget the name of the commander who came up with this Theory but the best maneuver in a naval battle is to cross the T. That is to say face your broadside to either the front or the back of the enemy so that all of your guns can be concentrated on one point while denying the enemy the ability to shoot back. ( of course take what I say with a pinch of salt, I'm not an expert in Naval Warfare nor am I British) ❤🇬🇧

Hi Mike, have you ever played Naval Action? A great square sail simulator as in the battles, horrible grind to get to the rank to sail the large ships. Worth an investment when on 'sail' (see what I did there) :))

Lame then Maim. Use chain to slow him down, then you can use maneuver to damage other stuff. You focused way too much on trying to capture the AI's ship and lost your own. The AI sent a boarding skiff and your crew with no morale gave up. Use Chain early in a sail ship fight to slow and reduce maneuverability of the enemy (Lame), then you can use either shot for hull damage or grape for crew damage (Maim), but always always always look for the bow or stern rake. Stern rakes are much more devastating. So Chain to shoot out enemy rigging, maneuver into the enemy ship's stern, then fire grape to kill the crew. Keep the range open and turn to maintain the rake. You gave up nearly every single maneuvering advantage you'd managed to gain. You're just not used to fighting sail ships, so you might not think the way you need.

Thanks for this advice, I had been struggling a bit in some missions (only play naval battles, not so keen on the land ones) but this has helped loads. Do you have any suggestions for which ship(s) or cannon(s) are best?
