Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought! Review. A Mysteriously Undercooked Gem With Hopes For The Future?

Ойын-сауық

I have been waiting for Ultimate Admiral Dreadnought for years and years! it covers a period practically no one else does and is made by passionate people over at Game Labs. And yet, after many years in early access the game is just not up to snuff with place holder feeling UI and campaign mechanics

From what I gathered, watching BrotherMunro and Stealth17Gaming who have regularly put out videos on UAD, this wasn't the fault of the dev team. Apparently, Game Labs was bought up by another company a year or so ago. And it seems that part of that deal was that Game Labs had to release a title in 1st Quarter 2023. It seems that UAD was the title closest to a releaseable state, and despite the Dev Team telling them that more work was needed before the game would be ready for full release, the parent company overruled them and told them to put the game on full release on Steam - which was done with practically no warning. From what BrotherMunro reported, sifting thru the forums, Reddit, and social media, the dev team were as upset about this as the playerbase was. On top of that, the parent company has given the dev team six months to do any "final" updates and bug fixes - and that's it - nothing afterward. The game will be left to sink or swim on it's own.

It's not like the dev team couldn't just refuse... If it's the same team as the guys behind Naval Action (and seeing complains about bans and censorship in Steam reviews - I think it is), I would not extend one iota of goodwill towards them. They ran NA to the ground besides warnings, complaints removed features and straight up lies. I'm pretty sure they showed first screenshots of this game when NA was still undercooked and badly in need of some love.

If you want a similar style game I’d nominate Rule The Waves. It’s far less graphically nice and the ability to customize the ships themselves is somewhat lighter but the campaign, individual battles, diplomacy, and management go far more in depth then UAD. The latest version is RTW2, which also includes aviation and carriers and the upcoming rule the waves 3 will include early anti ship missiles in the late game.

I do enjoy RTW2, even if I do not really play late game (and turn on the delay air option) because I am not fond of air combat, I have had good moments with my fleets. It is also a game that makes you think and consider the navy you have now, the navy you could have in about two years, and the navy you want to have. Sure, you could order a new line of battleships but will new technology in the time they take to build make them suboptimal? Such as building coal powered ships and oil engines get unlocked. Can your budget afford to lay down three or more BB/BC hulls or will you have to make one offs? You have a bunch of old destroyers laying around, scrap them or keep them around for trade protection so your top of the line destroyers can fight in the fleet? Who can you afford to provoke and who should you stay away from antagonizing? You basically have to find something you are satisfied with, it may not be your ideal navy full of ships with top of the line specs but good enough is good enough.

This is one of those games that I will be horrible at because I just want nothing but a small number of battleships which I assume will die easy to a proper fleet formation, especially with the torps. I just love the visuals of a nigh impervious behemoth bouncing shots off its hull as its monstrous cannons blast massive holes in the enemy. Funny enough in it's current state with the fleet command issues you've raised, controlling say 3 ships as individuals might be a better experience if it's viable.

I do wish they allowed us to make carriers and make our own navel planes etc. Allowing us to be a fucking admiral qnd run our navy the way we would want to. Be that light aircraft spam with big fuck off torpedoes to derp the enemy fleet into the sea. Just the developers have no seeming intention to actually do that. Well the more appropriate term is "organized chaos" but... yeah close enough. Especially if weather is poor and/or a few key people in command have decided to take leave of all their senses, and intelligence. Then yeah it can devolve into a naval version of a call of duty team deathmatch IRL fairly quickly. If you look into the early days of the US pacific campaign you'll see some examples of this.

Unfortunately, GameLabs has a pattern of "Mysteriously Undercooked" games. I love Naval Action, but it never really explored its potentials very well. Or at least that's the idea. Of course the actual battles kind of speaks against that... To anyone watching check out some of the KZreadrs doing campaigns with this game, you'll see both the good and the bad. And they learn to work with the formation system to some degree.

I don't *observe* people being banned for criticizing the game necessarily, even relatively harsh criticism. When the vitriol in a criticism exceeds the constructive feedback the thread gets locked. Also note that the dev team with the exception of the lead developer lives in Ukraine. That being said the things that this game would need to make it a great game will for the most part not be present even 1 year from now. I am hoping over the next 6 months the game is relatively stable and I can continue to release mods that polish up the soft-coded elements to make what gameplay exists as enjoyable as possible.

Games labs keeps starting these naval games, half implement the ideas they have then abandon them unfinished, just look at naval action that is now abandoned and f2p and they are making a single player version now

Is it possible they ran out of money ? Since the game has the potential of being too complex for a small team ? What is mildly hopeful is that there are already mods for it.

That Age of Sail game has been slowly turning into "Naval Action 2" shifting to multiplayer rather then single-player. Also they are developing "Ultimate General: American Revolution" Remember Gamelabs are owned by Stillfront, a mobile "game" publisher with a reputation worse then EA. Singleplayer, deep strategy games don't make shareholders happy.

I bought this game back in the wintersale... and within half an hour returned it. Primarily due to how terrible the interface was. Like how come devs consistently make terrible unintuitive and worst visually unappealing interfaces? Having to understand what which screen is trying to tell me is one thing, but does it then also have to make my eyes bleed?

The biggest sin of gamelabs is the fact they're founded by modders, but seem to hate putting in the function to mod their fucking games.

Honestly, if the developer is banning criticism of the game in any way, shape, or form, then there is no reason to give money to a developer that hates you. Simple as. Especially if said criticism is meant to be constructive or helpful. This game has many great ideas but is mediocre to just downright worse than the Beta. Almost to the point of being bad In fact. This was my first Games Labs game and it'll also be my last.

I'd have to agree. I've been trying to enjoy this game, but it certainly feels unfinished. It also has a very steep learning curve and honestly the naval academy tutorials don't help a whole lot.

This and this war of mine, but its basically being used as an excuse to deflect criticism. They still constantly add new features and dev updates, but dont go back to fix any of the half broken features and bugs they added previously. So instead of fixing campaign issues, they add submarines and mines, which noone really wanted and arent propperly implemented, then move on to adding the next set of features like land war, which as seen in the video are equally half baked

1 year down, and the torpedos are still crap and have to swarm the entire map just to have a few torpedos, ones that "might" not be duds anyway..... even with the newest update released..... its still grabage when the AI gets the insane amount of torpedo detection, even with electric..... stupid.....

A shame gamelabs had to / let themselves be bought out by a worthless shovelware company thats known to pump out trash mobile cashgrab "games" Just another once promising failure. Like so many others out there. The fact that i have to use cheat engine to bypass a beyond flawed political system and an additional third party trainer mod to get some enjoyment out of this game shows how much it turned for the worse over time. Too many "features" that are far more of a hindrance and annoyance to the gameplay. For anyone wanting to know how, the trainer can be found on wemod. For cheat engine, iirc the political relation values can be found via the float value.
